A reader s ruminations Submitted by Lesley M. Remember Remembrance For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12) My first experience of the horrors of war hit me when I was studying Wilfred Owen s poetry for A level. I can still remember the impact Dulce et Decorum Est (see page 16) and Anthem for Doomed Youth had on my 18-year-old mind. Later in life I was to take a party of teenage boys to Arras and Vimy Ridge and the sight of row after row after row of crosses had a profound impact not only on me but also the boys. So much so that some felt drawn to go into a nearby church and just sit. Our Remembrance services focus on those who suffered or died in conflict. As I write this, there are 22 conflicts taking place around the world. We need Remembrance Sunday to remind us that, in St. Paul s words, the struggle is against the Devil s schemes; against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world. It is right to stand up for justice, freedom and equality. Many of those who have fulfilled this task have only us to remember them. Remembrance Sunday should be kept so that former enemies can come together, so that sorrows can be shared, so peace and hope will eventually be commonplace in our world, just as Jesus Christ was an instrument for peace. Let us be a people who act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God in memory of those who fought to preserve our freedom. 3

Andy and Rose Roberts Submitted by Dave L. Liz and I have met Andy and Rose, his Brazilian wife, a few times on their visits to the UK and have always been impressed with their enthusiasm and commitment. They are truly inspirational. Andy and Rose have worked for the last five years in Olinda, NE Brazil, attempting to bring hope of a better future for young girls who are victims of sexual abuse and neglect. They are planning to expand this by taking on babies and young children, both boys and girls, up to the age of seven. They had a vision for another home after seeing how many babies and young children were in need. After sharing this idea and praying about it, money has come in. An amazing answer to prayer has been the purchase of a house next door. This will enable them to link the two houses and share resources. The running of the two houses for 22 children will be more manageable. 6
Andy realises that care homes such as theirs are expensive to run and do not replace a loving and supportive family. Fostering is a real alternative, but there is not one foster family in the whole of NE Brazil. Andy plans to use the local church to encourage Christians to support families who are willing to foster these vulnerable children. This article is part of Andy s latest link letter. If you would like to read the whole letter, please contact me or Liz and we will forward it to you either by or hard copy. Remembrance Sunday poem Television relays the programme As thousands attend the Albert Hall, Music plays and prayers are uttered Waiting for the poppy fall. Young men and boys of tender age, We must remember what it cost As they fought to save our country, Some came home and some were lost. Wars will always be amongst us Death and darkness, dread and fear, But one day this all will vanish When the Prince of Peace is here. by Megan Carte 7
Advent Calendar Box This year how about creating an Advent Calendar Box to replace your Advent Calendar? 1. Find a sturdy box. 2. Each day of Advent from December 1st to Christmas Eve, put one item from the following into the box: Advent 2018 Tinned vegetables Baked beans Tinned tuna Sugar Jam/marmalade Tinned fruit Orange juice Tea/coffee Breakfast cereal Dried pasta Long life milk Rice Sauces, e.g. Ragu Packet mash Rice pudding Pet food Tinned/packet soup Shampoo/soap Shower gel Toothbrush Washing up liquid Toothpaste Toilet rolls Bleach Ladies sanitary items 24 items in all. Check the sell/use by dates so that they extend well into On Christmas Day add one special treat item (e.g. chocolates or a cake). 4. After Christmas, bring the box to church and we will arrange to send it to the Storehouse Foodbank at New Life Church so that they are stocked up for the New Year. Lesley Murray referred in her article, on page 3, to Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est. The poem is printed on page 16. Here are some details about Wilfred Owen, the poet: On March 18th 1893, Wilfred Edward Salter Owen was born in Shropshire. 14
After the death of his grandfather in 1897, the family moved to Birkenhead, where Owen was educated at the Birkenhead Institute. After another move in 1906, he continued his studies at the Technical School in Shrewsbury. Interested in the arts at a young age, Owen began to experiment with poetry when he was 17. After failing to gain entrance into the University of London, Owen spent a year as a lay assistant to Reverend Herbert Wigan in 1911 and went on to teach in France at the Berlitz School of English. By 1915, he had become increasingly interested in World War I and enlisted in the Artists Rifles group. After training in England, Owen was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He was wounded in combat in 1917 and evacuated to Craiglockhart War Hospital near Edinburgh after being diagnosed with shell shock. There he met another patient, poet Siegfried Sassoon, who served as a mentor. It was at this time Owen wrote many of his most important poems, including Dulce et Decorum Est. His poetry often graphically illustrated the horrors of warfare, the physical landscapes that surrounded him and the human body. His verses stand in stark contrast to the patriotic poems of war written by other British poets, such as Rupert Brooke. Owen rejoined his regiment in Scarborough in June 1918, and in August he returned to France. He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery at Amiens. He was killed on November 4th of that year while attempting to lead his men across the Sambre-Oise canal at Ors. He was 25 years old. The poem is a reminder that whilst we rightly remember the heroism and sacrifice made by so many for their country, there is an ugly side to warfare and even a darker side to patriotism which also needs to be remembered. 15
Dulce et Decorum Est (pro patria mori) (Latin phrase from the Roman poet Horace: It is sweet and fitting to die for one s country. ) Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs, And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots, But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of gas-shells dropping softly behind. Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! - An ecstasy of fumbling Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time, But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And flound ring like a man in fire or lime. Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace. Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil s sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. 16
