2 Lord God, We thank you for the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus, who gave himself generously for us. Help us to sacrifice, to lay down our lives for others, as Jesus taught his disciples. Help us to have courage as we sacrifice our time, our money and our energy for those who need us. May we take us our cross, whatever that looks like for each of us, knowing that you go before us and beside us. Amen. Exciting News There is something really exciting that is going to happen in the Solihull area I can t tell you any more as I have been sworn to secrecy. However, if you want to find out what this is please put the following date in your diary 4 th March at our 10am service. Richard Gamble is coming to St. Patrick s to tell us all about it. This is going to be major for us here in St. Patrick s for those of you who doubt that God is blessing us come along and find out what this is all about. Electoral Roll The latest information regarding the electoral roll is now displayed. Please can you check that you are on this and if not can you let Lianne Nicolls or Rev d Julie know by the 3 rd March at the latest? Lent Course START! The Lent Course continues on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in the Undercroft. Please, it would be lovely if more of you would consider joining us for this course as a church it is vital that we all work together especially with the new housing that is being built around us. It is important that we all have a good understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Christ and this course gives us that confidence to talk to new people about why we are Christians. Admittedly, the course is designed for new Christians and for many of you this won t be anything new but it will be a refresher and If we are to grow this church and really respond to God s call to be his disciples, then he needs ALL of us to take our calling as the priesthood of all believers seriously. So please, can I urge you all to give this time to God in Lent. Don t give something up for Lent - TAKE THIS COURSE ON! 2

3 Women s World Day of Prayer Service Friday 2nd March 10.30am at The Bridge, 234 Stratford Rd, Shirley, Solihull B90 3AG The theme will be All God s Creation is Very Good and has been prepared by the women, of Suriname. (The Republic of Suriname lies in the north eastern part of South America). All are very welcome. Narthex and Food Bank The food items needed for this week are; tinned fruit, Sugar, Juice, Milk, Milk powder, Oil, Chapatti Flour (1.5kg / 5kg). We are also completely out of toiletries at the moment and would like to be able to give the following essentials toilet rolls, sanitary items, shower gel/soap, shampoo, toothpaste. Our Clothes banks are in need of Ladies socks and size 8,10,12 underwear. Men s underwear small and medium Men s shoes/trainers sizes 8 and 9 Also, please can anyone help with a Moses basket and baby s pushchair. Donations of Wool If you have any double knitting wool, preferably in pastel colours, please can you speak to Val Sperrey as she would like it to knit for premature babies. Tel: Support for Local Hospitals Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust (HEFT) is looking for additional Bank Chaplains from the local churches to join the existing chaplaincy team in providing spiritual & pastoral care for patients in Heartlands, Solihull and Good Hope Hospitals. Primarily this would be out-of-hours cover for the three hospitals from 5pm-9am on weekday nights and at weekends. Call-out would normally be for end-of-life situations. The remuneration is at the rate of approx. 13 per 12-hour session plus an additional fee payable per emergency call out. This figure varies, depending on the length of the call-out and mileage involved. 4 Chaplaincy Volunteers for Heartlands Hospital Sought Do you have a strong faith? Are you a good listener? Are you comfortable when asked, to pray with someone? Do you have experience in offering pastoral care through your church? Would you be willing to commit to two hours a week for visiting patients on the wards in Heartlands Hospital? If your answer is yes to the questions above, then you might be just who the chaplaincy team at Heartlands Hospital is looking for. The formal application procedure includes taking up references and undertaking a CRB (DBS) check. Upon successful completion of the application process, induction and training in healthcare chaplaincy is provided covering such things as, Mental Health/Wellbeing/Self Care, chaplaincy in a multi-faith setting, communication skills, reflective practice, confidentiality & boundary setting. Telephone: Kairos Coffee Shop has vacancies Kairos Coffee shop is looking for an Assistant Manager. Knowledge of food preparation and cooking, along with experience in planning and costing menus and an understanding of budgets and stock control are key skills which are desirable but on which training can be provided if needed. Exceptional organising skills and a passion for excellent service are essential. You should have the ability to work with people from all walks of life, being sensitive to Customers needs. You will assist the Manager in the development of this outreach in the longer term. Previous experience in a similar enterprise would be clearly advantageous though not essential. The post is for up to 20 hours per week. They are also looking for a Saturday Assistant specific hours to be negotiated this could also be a job share. 5 Confirmation this Year. This year the confirmation will be taking place on Saturday 19 th May time to be agreed but probably in the evening, and the venue will be at one of the Elmdon Parish Churches again to be agreed. I will be leading the confirmation classes for St. Patrick s candidates and these will be for 5 Sunday sessions as follows: Week 1 25 th March 4pm 5pm in the vicarage (Note there is a break then due to Easter being early this year) Week 2 22 nd April 4pm 5pm in the vicarage Week 3 29 th April 4pm 5pm in the vicarage Week 4 6 th May 4pm 5pm in the vicarage Week 5 13 th May 4pm 5pm in the vicarage If you would like to be confirmed, as well as attending the confirmation sessions you will be expected to attend St. Patrick s Church on Sunday mornings at 10am for a minimum of 12 times between the following dates 4 th February 13 th May, there will be an attendance register at the back of church for this purpose. Collect at 10am Service Almighty God, by the prayer and discipline of Lent may we enter into the mystery of Christ s sufferings, and by following in his Way may we come to share in his glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Genesis 17:1-7 & When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers. 3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, 4 As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 15 God also said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her. 17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety? 6

7 Romans 4:13-end 13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. 16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham s offspring not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17 As it is written: I have made you a father of many nations. He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not. 18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, So shall your offspring be. [b] 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old and that Sarah s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why it was credited to him as righteousness. 23 The words it was credited to him were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Mark 8:31-end 31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. Get behind me, Satan! he said. You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns. 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to 7

8 gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father s glory with the holy angels. Post Communion Prayer Lord of this feast beyond measure and price; we thank you for meeting us in our brokenness so that none might be lost: liberate us now to share bread with our neighbour, each receiving from the other what we need to be ourselves.
