Go to and help your neighbor! Immigration Initiative: Helping Our Neighbor Do you want to do something to help immigrant families in your community? Not sure where to start? Catholic Charities of the East Bay attorneys and legal staff will be hosting workshops to talk about immigration legal services and to listen to ideas. Workshops are designed for clergy, staff and parishioners interested in learning how to help their neighbor. Together we can become the change we want to see. 4 Parish News & Events Parish Office Closed The parish office will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. New Eucharistic Ministers Needed St. Mary Magdalen needs Eucharistic Ministers for the Saturday 5:30 p.m. Vigil Mass and the 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. Sunday Masses. No previous experience is necessary. Training will be provided. To sign up, please contact the parish office. Mission Dinner Community The St. Mary Magdalen Mission Dinner Community has the last dinner of this cycle tonight, Sunday, May 17th. We will break for summer and start a new cycle in September. This dinner will go to support our sister Dominican parish in Mexicali. We will also hear a report from the St. Mary's High School Immersion program which we supported through our November and February dinners. By participating with a donation of $20 per adult and $5 per child, you'll get a great meal, meet great folks from the parish and support a great cause. We meet in Norton Hall at 6:00 p.m. for appetizers, with dinner at 7:00 p.m.. New Readers Needed St. Mary Magdalen needs readers for the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses. No previous experience is necessary. Training will be provided over two Saturdays in May. Readers are scheduled three times per quarter, approximately 12 times per year. 5 Noteworthy Elsewhere Peace & Social Justice Our Lady of Fatima Devotions 13th of the month, May through October St. John the Baptist Church San Pablo Ave., El Cerrito Tom Kennedy, (510) St. John the Baptist Parish in El Cerrito is honoring Our Lady of Fatima with a monthly procession and Mass. In response to Our Lady s call for prayer, the gathering will take place on the 13th of each month from May to October beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the church to pray, then processing around the block while saying the rosary and returning to the church for Mass. Fr. Louis Vitale, OFM, on Activism & Social Justice Monday, May 18th from 2:00 3:00 p.m. Mercy Retirement & Care Center 3431 Foothill Blvd., Oakland Janet Thompson, (510) info@mercyretirementcenter.org Fr. Louis Vitale, OFM is a Franciscan priest and activist who has engaged in civil disobedience for nearly four decades in pursuit of peace and justice. He served as the provincial superior of the Franciscan Friars of the Province of Santa Barbara from 1979 to 1988, and served as pastor at St. Boniface Catholic Church in San Francisco s Tenderloin. Social Thought journal Catholic Charities USA has announced the relaunch of Social Thought, which it describes as "an academic journal aimed squarely at the intersection of social work practice, public policy analysis, and our Catholic social and moral tradition." The journal will come out quarterly and can be accessed from the following website: Charities USA This quarter's issue (Volume 1, Number 1) is entitled Immigration and the Family, and looks at the impact our nation's broken immigration system has on families. The contributors look at the topic from legal, practical and theological perspectives, quoting often from papal encyclicals. A concluding remark reads : "Catholic Charities agencies are on the front lines in assisting immigrant communities across the nation, and should remain so. The Church must serve her mission and remain a stalwart in welcoming the stranger." This statement dovetails nicely with the following item Read on! REMINDER! A meeting of the Peace & Social Justice Committee will take place this Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Rectory. An important item on the agenda is Father Kieran's suggestion that our parish sponsor some refugees and do whatever is needed to help them get settled. An "ad hoc" subcommittee has been exploring this idea, and will report on what has been done so far. All are welcome please come and share your ideas!

6 Faith & Spirituality Religious Vocations An excerpt from Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) Apostolic Exhortation of the Holy Father FRANCIS For the Church, the option for the poor is primarily a theological category rather than a cultural, sociological, political or philosophical one. God shows the poor his first mercy. This divine preference has consequences for the faith life of all Christians, since we are called to have this mind which was in Jesus Christ (Phil 2:5). Inspired by this, the Church has made an option for the poor which is understood as a special form of primacy in the exercise of Christian charity, to which the whole tradition of the Church bears witness. This option as Benedict XVI has taught is implicit in our Christian faith in a God who became poor for us, so as to enrich us with his poverty. This is why I want a Church which is poor and for the poor. They have much to teach us. Not only do they share in the sensus fidei, but in their difficulties they know the suffering Christ. We need to let ourselves be evangelized by them. The new evangelization is an invitation to acknowledge the saving power at work in their lives and to put them at the center of the Church s pilgrim way. We are called to find Christ in them, to lend our voice to their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them, to speak for them and to embrace the mysterious wisdom which God wishes to share with us through them. 7 Additional Parish News Special Collection for Nepal on May 23/24 As you are all aware, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on April 25th. Even more recently, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on May 12th. The devastation and toll on human life is still becoming clear as the rescue works continue. At the request of Bishop Barber, St. Mary Magdalen will be taking up a special collection to help our brothers and sisters in Nepal. Checks can be made out to the Diocese of Oakland, with Nepal Earthquake in the memo line or on the remittance stub. The Diocese of Oakland will send one check to Catholic Relief Services on behalf of our parishes and parishioners. Update Regarding Parish Recycling Program At the Parish Recycling Program meeting that occurred on April 29th, it was agreed that recycling is not working at the Parish or School and that more needs to be done in terms of education and equipment/signage. Getting this program to be successful will require every group that uses the Parish Hall, Norton Hall or the School to have a person (a recycling ambassador) who is knowledgeable about recycling and can facilitate it. Ultimately, all of us have to take responsibility for making conscious decisions when tossing items. Groups that plan events should ideally look for products to use that can be composted or recycled, rather than buying items that have to be trashed. Carolyn Tune has done a great job of making changes to the after Sunday Mass (8:30/9:30 only) Coffee Hour, so that almost everything can be composted (cups, napkins, donut boxes, sugar packet paper, tea bags, wax cartons for cream). All of these items go in the green containers. Carolyn switched from styrofoam cups that have to be trashed to paper cups that can be composted and got rid of plastic stirrers which also go into the garbage. It takes a little more thought, but makes a huge difference in the amount of waste we produce. We are researching recycling containers that will be good for large events, as well as clear signage for all containers. We plan on consulting with various School people to make sure what is ordered will work for all groups. Ultimately, the Parish and School will be fined if we do not do a reasonable job of composting and recycling.
