It was during the fourth century in Jerusalem that Christians first starting using palm branches in commemoration of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem. Today, we continue to use palms in most churches on this Sunday, Catholic and Protestant alike. It is one of those traditions of worship that, no matter how far apart we may seem at times, we continue to share due to our common heritage. But Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, because we hear an account of the passion of Jesus Christ during the liturgy. Most churches also share this reading in common. Many Catholic parishes use multiple lectors to proclaim the Gospel, while it is not uncommon for a similar reading or even a performance in many mainstream Protestant churches. The commonality found in the worship on this particular Sunday seems to highlight the fundamental truth in the observance: Jesus Christ died for everyone. He did not die on a cross for just Catholics, or just Orthodox, or just Protestants. Whether one acknowledges it or not, he was crucified for all those who are born of man. Today, we rejoice not just for what he has done for us but also for what he has done for all of creation. HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Committed to living out the endless love of the Trinity, we are a welcoming, faith-sharing Catholic family of believers, centered on the Holy Eucharist as the source of our life in Christ. 2

If a priest has impacted your life through their ministry or their holiness, today is a good day to say thank you to them. Today s collection is for the retired Priests and Brothers of the Congregation of the Resurrection. Father Rafal, C.R., Pastor Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Holy Trinity would like to congratulate all of the Science Fair participants for a job well done! Adorer s Corner Could you not keep watch with me for one hour? Enter into the Passion of our Lord by spending some of your Holy Week consoling our Eucharistic Lord at the Sacred Heart Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration. Offer thanksgiving and praise for the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made on your behalf. HE CAME TO PAY A DEBT HE DIDN T OWE BECAUSE WE OWED A DEBT WE COULDN T PAY. The Sacred Heart Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration will close for regular adoration at 6:00 p.m. on Holy Thursday and re-open immediately following the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday. Palm Sunday Our humanity bleeds through today's Gospel passages in more ways than one. We see both elation and fall, hope in the midst of the darker sides of our natures. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days - even hours - Jesus is betrayed, abandoned, denied, condemned, tortured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He allows free will to play itself out. There are nearly two millennia between this spectacle and us. We can stand safely removed, if we choose. But Lent invites us to return to this story. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we encounter there. Are we the repentant woman at Bethany? Are we naysayers of such lavish piety? Have we acted in a way that betrays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they didn't commit? Do we help others carry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying? This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and ponder its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!" 5
