CATHEDRAL VISION AND STRATEGY NEWS Four consultations with the Cathedral congregation have now been held and we are beginning to recognize some common areas for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. These will be analyzed and by the end of August we shall have some priorities discerned and will be testing them out with various groups in the Autumn. In addition I have been meeting with other churches locally, business people and clergy in the wider diocese in order to build a full picture. Chapter have also reviewed the last plan. The meetings have certainly generated quite a bit of energy and in anticipation of new Discipleship courses finding their way into the programme we are launching the Pilgrim course in the Autumn. More details about this will be forthcoming. In addition we have been exploring our Key Values. Everything we do will be touched with these Values. They are the very essence of what we are as a Community. The first Value looks like being Hospitality. the welcome that we offer at all services the refreshments that we provide looking after the needy helping people feel part of the worship. looking after the Cathedral building and enhancing the visitor offer caring for the Precinct, an oasis of beauty and peace in the centre of the City There is of course a whole theology behind this one word consider the Gospel stories of the feeding of the thousands, the Prodigal Son and the Acts of Mercy in Matthew 25. Next month I shall reveal the second Value. The purpose of the process is to energise the life, ministry and mission of the Cathedral to achieve growth and financial sustainability. By the end we aim to have a ten year strategy (2025) supported by a five year plan (2020) and an annual programme with specific objectives. Please remember to pray. We have produced a prayer card that is available and we need the guidance and discernment of the Spirit in all that we do. Dean Jerry PRAYER FOR A TIME OF CHANGE AND GROWTH God of mission, who alone brings growth to your Church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to our actions, and power to our witness. Help our Cathedral to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment and in service to our local communities, area and diocese: through Jesus Christ our Lord: Amen.
DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE NEW DIOCESE AND BISHOP NICK Saturday 12th July On 12th July the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales has been invited by the Cathedrals to pray for Bishop Nick and the very significant development work and appointments that will be taking place in the coming months. This Saturday is before the three enthronements that Bishop Nick will have at Wakefield (15th), Bradford (17th) and Ripon (20th). We shall be setting aside two hours from 1pm to 3pm for a prayer vigil in the Cathedral in the South Transept. Do join us, for whatever length of time you wish. Otherwise please do remember to pray particularly on that day for Bishop Nick and the mission and ministry of the parishes in this new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. Dean Jerry ENTHRONEMENT Thursday 17th July at 7.00pm In what we think is another first, Bishop Nick will knock on the door of the Cathedral for a second time on Thursday 17 th July at 7pm at the start of a service that will see him enthroned as Bishop of Leeds. Along with the enthronements taking place at Wakefield on Tuesday July 15th and at Ripon on Sunday July 20th, the service marks the beginning of Bishop Nick s public ministry as Diocesan Bishop in West Yorkshire and the Dales. Each service will have a different character to reflect the diversity of the new diocese. In Wakefield the first part of the Enthronement service will be inside with most people standing to enable as many as possible to take part, before the service moves outside to seating in the Cathedral precinct. The congregation here will include community and faith leaders from across the area as well as the Lord Mayor and council leaders. We will also be welcoming Bishop Ismail from the Diocese of El Obeid in the Sudan, and Bishop Mark, the Bishop of Southwestern Virginia. In Ripon the Bishops of Kurunagula and Colombo will be attending, marking the Sri Lanka link, and Bishop Nick will take his oaths on the Ripon Bible, dated 1260, and the historic Ripon Horn will be blown by the city s Hornblower as Bishop Nick takes his seat. If you would like a ticket to attend the enthronement in Bradford, please contact the Cathedral office. Canon Sam
MONDAY FELLOWSHIP Monday 14th July at 2.00pm Favourite Hymns and/or a Favourite Object Our Objects sessions in the past have been popular and we thought we would extend it to include hymns on this occasion. Please feel free to choose either or both or if you simply want to come and listen, you will be just as welcome to join us. We look forward to seeing you. Monday 11th August at 3.00pm Annual Fellowship Cream Tea We look forward to our annual Fellowship Cream Tea. Again, by kind invitation of Dean Jerry and Christina, this will be held in the Deanery at 3pm. Please note the later start time! Eveline Hudson & June Kelley TEXTILE SCHEME Sunday 13th July and Tuesday 22nd July Work has been progressing on the scheme over the past few months and Polly Meynell has been busy designing and producing vestments for all five of the Bishops in the new Diocese. These will be used for the first time at each of the Enthronements later this month. We are hopeful that the Green frontal, fall and stoles will then be with us by early September and that the red and purple sets will follow in November, with the Copes with us in time for Christmas. To complete the project, we need to raise a further 2,500. This includes the cost of the storage cupboard that will be appearing in the North Ambulatory soon. Donations can be made in the usual ways, but please be sure to state that your donation is towards the textile appeal. After the summer, work will begin on stitching the kneelers. If you would like to be involved in this, I am holding two meetings in the Chapter House for anyone who is interested in finding out more on Sunday 13 th July at11.45am following the morning service and on Tuesday 22 nd July at 2.00pm. Please do come along if you are at all interested in finding out more attendance at one of the meetings will not mean you have to be involved! In the meantime I would be delighted to answer any question you may have about the various aspects of the project. With best wishes, Canon Sam Corley
HARVEST SUNDAY Sunday 28th September Harvest will be celebrated in the morning services on Sunday 28th September when the Cathedral will be decorated with flowers and produce. If you would like to bring non-perishable produce to be brought up to the altar with the offering at the service, please do. It will subsequently be donated to the Trussell Trust Foodbank on Stott Hill, and details will be available nearer the time about suitable offerings. MISSION LUNCH Sunday 5th October We will not be having our usual Harvest Social on 28th September but hope you can come instead to the bring and share lunch on Sunday 5th October, when we will be hearing about the work of Abigail Housing from Emily Fullarton, and having some fellowship time. Abigail residents use the Foodbank on Stott Hill, so the lunch will be a timely opportunity to hear more about the needs of people who benefit from our year-round support for the Abigail Project, as well as our Harvest gifts. Maggie Peel WORLD WAR ONE VIGIL Monday 4th August Prayer and Reflection from 7.30pm : Service of Readings 10.00pm Across the country, churches and cathedrals will be open for prayer and reflection on the evening of Monday, 4 th August to mark the anniversary of the start of the First World War. The BBC will broadcast a service live from Westminster Abbey at 10pm that evening. The Cathedral will be open for prayer and reflection from 7.30pm until 11pm and people are welcome to come and go as they please. At 10pm there will be a service of readings and prayers inspired by Edward Grey s famous remark, the lamps are going out all over Europe, and will draw on the shape and contents of the service in Westminster Abbey. You are all most welcome to attend.
THE PILGRIM COURSE IS COMING TO BRADFORD CATHEDRAL! Pilgrim is a course for the Christian journey, a new resource which has been launched nationally to help people grow in faith. Who is it for? Those who want a chance to think about the Christian faith Those who have recently started coming to Church Those preparing for baptism or confirmation Those who have been Christians for many years and want to visit the roots of their faith again So that s all of us! The material has been written by some leading authors, in an accessible format, using a mix of reflection on Scripture, audio-visual clips, discussion, and prayers, finishing with some food for thought to take you into the coming week. The authors say it is unashamedly Anglican! Intrigued? We plan to start our own series here in September, so look out for the publicity, and have a chat with Sue McWhinney or the clergy if you d like to know more. COULD YOU BECOME A CATHEDRAL WELCOMER? Can you spare 2 hours a month? We invite you to come and share in the valuable ministry of Welcome, by joining our rota for just a couple of hours each month. You don t need to be a tour guide, or have a theological degree just a friendly and caring manner, and a willingness to help. Your Cathedral needs you! For further details contact the Cathedral Office or Gillian Davis at gillian.davis@bradfordcathedral.org. IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE CATHEDRAL...Welcome! Please make yourself known to one of the Churchwardens, Sue McWhinney, and Maggie Peel who would love to meet you. If you would like to join a Fellowship Group, find out more about the congregational life of the Cathedral, including social events, or if we can help in any way, please ask one of the stewards at the door, who will find us for you. We look forward to meeting you.
The Bradford School of Ministry An Occasional Theology Day St Cuthbert s, Wrose, Bradford Saturday 6th September 10am pm 50 Years a Retrospective (How we got to where we are as post-war Anglicans and where we might go in the future) Colin Buchanan will share his reflections on over 50 years of ordained ministry during which time he has been parish priest, college Principal and Bishop. He has been an influential member of General Synod and contributed especially to liturgical development. During this special study day he will explore topics such as the resurgence of Anglican evangelicalism, the growth of Anglo-Catholicism and the influence of the Charismatic movement. As usual there is no charge for the day but those interested should book a place by contacting Steve Allen at: 1 Hawkstone Avenue, Guiseley. LS20 8ET or or steve.allen505@gmail.com. Drinks & biscuits will be provided (plus birthday cake to celebrate Colin s 80th birthday!) but please bring a packed lunch. Regular supporters of Occasional Theology Days should note the different venue for this event, chosen in anticipation of a larger attendance than normal. This event is of course open to all who belong to the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. CALLING ALL SIDESMEN, DEPUTY WARDENS AND THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE TEAM! This year there will be a new style of annual meeting, which will combine a time for fresh insights on the ministry of welcome, social time and commissioning by the Dean, in the context of Choral Evensong, on Sunday 28 th September, starting at 2.30pm (finish by 5pm). It would be good if as many Sidesmen and Deputy Wardens as possible were able to be a part of this, given that this is the only opportunity we have to meet all together each year, so please put the date in your diaries now. More details will be available nearer the time. If anyone else would like to consider joining the team, please speak to me. Sue McWhinney (Churchwarden)
MUSIC THIS MONTH The Cathedral Choir's term ends on Thursday 17th July with the Installation service for Bishop Nick Baines at Bradford, which will be sung by the Girls and Adults with music by Parry, Stanford and Bruckner. This comes as the culmination of a busy term for the Music Department. May saw the positive news of matchfunding for the Organ Appeal from the Liz & Terry Bramall Foundation, as well as the award of a grant from the Friends of Cathedral Music allowing us to appoint a graduate musician in the new year to assist with our chorister tuition. We are in the process of shortlisting and interviewing candidates for the position from a very promising field. June began with the Inauguration of the New Diocese in York Minster, at which our boys and men excelled themselves, singing Parry's 'My soul there is a country' in their own right, and appearing for the first time in many years as co-equal choirs with those at Ripon and Wakefield. Sunday July 6th will see the presentation of the Friends of Cathedral Music's grant by Professor Peter Toyne at the Sunday Eucharist, and the subsequent weekend plays host to our Inaugural Music Festival (for details please see the front cover). None of this would be possible without the day to day dedication and loyalty of our choir members. At the end of this Choir Year, on Sunday 13th July, we will bid farewell to Emily Wheeler from the Girls' Choir and to Alfie Buchanan, Rowan Hirst and Nicholas Brinkworth from the Boys' Choir. Alfie deserves particular mention as he is our longest-serving chorister, joining us in 2007, and in fact is the last of the Bradford Choristers still to sing treble, recruited by the Bradford Choristers before their merge with the Cathedral Choir under Richard Darke and Andrew Teague. However, the commitment shown by all of these young people has been exemplary. We are also delighted to report that, in reflection of the eternal progression of things, a trio of probationer boys will be attending fulltime from September, and there are some promising probationers among the girls as well who will play a larger part in our music making in the new academic year and beyond. We bade farewell to Laurence Price, tenor lay clerk, in June and wished him well as he embarked upon his ministerial training. The initial phase of work to the Cathedral Organ will take place this summer, focused on the organ console. New keyboards, pedal board, bench, swell boxes, pistons and a stepper system all feature as part of the work, as well as enhancing the mechanical and electrical reliability of the console. The work, we very much hope, will be completed in time for the start of the new choir year in September. Organ recitals take a break for the summer after Dr Christopher Johns' visit on July 9th, returning again on September 17th, when we are privileged to welcome the distinguished Dr Martin Neary, former Master of the Choristers at
Westminster Abbey, to play at the Wednesday recital, and also to work with the boys and men at the preceding Tuesday Evensong. August is always a musically quiet month: it provides a time for refreshment for the Cathedral Choir and Music Department staff, but also offers an opportunity for the congregation to enjoy taking responsibility for their own musical leadership: in a sense the congregation becomes the choir! There is much to look forward to next term. Beyond the daily round of choral services and the weekly recitals, there is a trio of silent movies next term to enjoy on Friday evenings, the continuance of the Vocalise Outreach Programme, a Choir Tour for the girls and adults to London and St Albans (singing at Southwark and St Albans Cathedral and the Queen's Chapel of the Savoy), a special service to welcome the new suffragan Bishop of Bradford, and of course the magical Christmas services at the end of term. Alongside all this hard work, the arrival of a new musician on the staff funded by the Friends of Cathedral Music should allow for a wonderful enhancement in the musical education that we can provide to each chorister, child and adult alike. My thanks to my colleagues who have assisted me in another successful Choir Year, to our choristers and choir families, our volunteers and supporters from far and wide, without whom none of these positive endeavours would be possible. Alex Woodrow PASTORAL CARE At this time of being in between Canons pastoral care and regular home communions will be overseen by Sue McWhinney and Alex McLelland. Please have a word with either of us if you have any concerns, would like to request a visit, or have noticed that someone has been absent from the congregation for a while. We will liaise with the Dean and Canon Sam as appropriate. Sue and Alex EXTENDED MEMBERSHIP Please remember in your prayers the following members of the Cathedral fellowship who, through illness or incapacity, cannot attend in person: Pat Baly Dorothy Dean Barbara Foulds Hilda Hook Hazel Naylor Joan Simpson Marie Toft Dorothy Walsh Heather Wright If anyone you know would appreciate being added to this list, please speak to one of the clergy or churchwardens, Sue McWhinney or Maggie Peel.
FROM CANON ANDY & JENNIE We could not have dreamt of a more splendid send-off than we have been given. We feel we have been showered with affection, good wishes, cards and gifts. 'Thank you' sounds rather limp and inadequate. But please receive our most heart-felt gratitude for everything you have given us as we take our leave. Sunday's end of service presentation was humbling; kind words from the Dean, a comprehensive speech from Maggie Peel and then such generous gifts organised and graciously presented by Sue McWhinney. Accompanying a wonderful card filled with messages, a large (and much appreciated) cheque were three books for daily prayer and devotion and a luxury piece of kit for streaming data from Apple devices to a TV screen. Harvey, our Silver Stand-up, had us in stitches with his fine after-dinner speech at Kala Sangam. Thank you again, so very much. May God bless each and all of you PS The Cathedral Office has our onward contact details, effective from 1st July. CANON FOR GROWTH AND PASTORAL DEVELOPMENT The day after Canon Andy completed his ministry here at the Cathedral we interviewed for a new Canon. This post is aiming to be focused on the Congregation and will be prioritising growth - our statistics are showing a slight decline in congregation numbers although other services are very well attended. This post will also be looking to beef up the way we care for the Cathedral congregation by enhancing lay ministry alongside the clergy pastoral care. Since advertising this in May we have noticed that other Cathedrals are heading in this direction too. Unfortunately we did not feel able to appoint this time around and so we shall be advertising again in a few weeks. This means that during the Autumn we shall be understaffed again, although we do have the benefit of our Curate, the Revd Cat Thatcher. We have worked out that due to sabbaticals and clergy movement we have only had a full clergy team for 12.5% of the last three years so we are looking forward to some stability in the coming years! Dean Jerry
ABIGAIL PROJECT UPDATE Thank you to all those who continue to support Abigail Housing through donations and gifts. So far in 2014 we have housed 23 asylum seekers. We have almost completed the opening of our new property, Blucher Street which we obtained through partnering with a Christian organisation called Green Pastures. It would be great if individuals could commit to pray for this property and all of our residents. We still greatly appreciate donations of food, helpful items are: rice, oil, sweetcorn, kidney beans, tuna and treats (such as chocolate and biscuits). With thanks, Emily, Daniel and Maggie CHILDREN S SUNDAY SPACE This term we'll be looking at some of the famous stories Jesus told and be thinking about what they tell us about him, as well as how they help us to live our lives. Full of all the usual food, crafts, stories and drama... looking forward to seeing you there! Please note that we break up for the summer on Sunday 20th July, recommencing on Sunday 7th September. For more details about Children s Sunday Space please speak to Claire Corley. TODDLER GROUP Our Toddler Group is expanding! We've partnered up with Community Works, which grew out of St Augustine s when Denise Poole was vicar. Their recent Ofsted awarded them six outstanding grades. They have provided one of their workers, a lovely lady called Jane, to support our work on Friday morning and have also, alongside ourselves, launched an additional group on a Wednesday morning in the Parish Hall. In time, we hope that this will allow us to develop our outreach to provide sessions such as baby massage and parenting groups. The Wednesday Toddler group will continue during the holidays, but the Friday one will be taking a summer break - the last meeting before the holiday will be on Friday,18th July, and it will recommence Friday, 5th September. So please encourage anyone to come for whom this would be a blessing: Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9:30am to 11:00.am. For more details please speak to Claire Corley.
