1 Published regularly by the parishioners of St. Paul s Episcopal Church 201 E. Ridge Street * Marquette * Michigan * (906) Stewardship Report; the Response has been Great! by Dennis West Through December 13, 2010 we had received 57 pledge commitments for This included 44 renewals and 13 new pledges. The total amount that has been pledged is $96,358. Among all who renewed their pledges, the overall average increase it 15% over their 2010 pledges. Thanks for such a great response to all who have participated in this campaign. Last year we had 58 pledges so with the 13 new pledges, there are 15 families who have yet to commit. You can see how outstanding a year this has the possibility of being. It is still possible that we could exceed $100,000. That would be coffee hour-cake worthy! Along with that development, the Scrip card program has helped St. Paul s to earn nearly $500 in just the first two orders. Please consider supporting this effort every first or third Sunday. We are off to such a great start with just twenty families participating so far. There is still time to make your pledge commitment for 2011, and if you have not made your commitment yet, please try to do so soon. Finally, the Stewardship Committee intends to meet year round this year and we would love to add more members. If you are interested see Dennis West. Bringing Church to Nursing Facilities - an Opportunity to Serve A half-dozen main-line Protestant congregations have been sharing in monthly communion ministries at four Marquette residential facilities. As a result of this yearlong collaboration, one of these facilities (Brookridge Heights) has asked us to bring short, devotional (singing of familiar hymns; reading familiar scripture) services to residents of their new memory unit. Other participating congregations are seeking interested volunteers from among their membership to respond to this invitation. Please, if any of you are interested in exploring your participation in such a ministry, speak to me. (Bob Railey)

2 New Members of the St. Paul's Family by Sandy Purrington Carol Rees It is a great pleasure to welcome four of our newest members of the St. Paul's family. Here are brief stories of their lives that they shared with us: Carol was born in Mitchell, South Dakota (home of the world-famous Corn Palace and former U.S. Senator George McGovern) and went to college at the University of South Dakota. She worked as a Laboratory Technician in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; and later in St. Petersburg, Florida. She returned to Minneapolis where she worked at General Mills Inc. running their Medical Lab for 28 years and retired in l994. Carol says, "I was married and divorced in Minneapolis. I have no siblings or living relatives except for cousins in South Dakota. I grew up in the Episcopal Church in Mitchell and now I am happy to be back in the church at St. Paul's." Christine Flavin Christine is an Assistant Professor, teaching photography, in the School of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University. Since moving to the Upper Peninsula, she has photographed abandoned iron and copper mining sites throughout the region with hand-built, pinhole cameras. Her photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the Upper Peninsula as well as in Wisconsin and Texas. Christine lives in a log cabin at the base of the south side of Hog Back Mountain with her 10 month old rescue dog, Winifred. Her two adult daughters, Melissa and Julia, live in St. Louis and Fort Worth. Bea and Jon Trapp Bea Trapp and her son, Jon, moved to Marquette from Terre Haute, Indiana, where they were members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. They chose Marquette for their new home because, after visiting a couple of times -- including a visit to St. Paul's, they "fell in love with the town and the people." Their very positive visit to St. Paul's had a big influence on their decision to move here. They also were attracted by the opportunity to be near a big body of water. Bea is a retired music teacher. She grew up in Seattle and has a BA in music education from the University of Puget Sound. She and her former husband taught music while living in several countries with the military in Europe, and that is where Jon was born -- in Stuttgart, Germany. Jon has an MFA and an MPA in Public Nonprofit Administration. He taught in colleges in Terre Haute and Mount Pleasant, Indiana. Both Bea and Jon are great appreciators of the arts. They also have a great fondness for birds and share their home with a dove. They are very happy to be living in Marquette and to be at St. Paul's which they have found to be a "very warm and welcoming place."

Liturgy Meeting: Thursday, January 20, 10:30a.m. Seasonal Planning January 9 will be the last day to sign up to be part of planning for the Easter season. The Great 50 Days, running from April 24 through June 12 (Day of Pentecost), is the grandest season of the liturgical year. It begins with the Great Vigil of Easter (the grandest liturgy for many of Christendom s denominations) and ends with what many consider to be the church s birthday. With Easter Day occurring on nearly the latest date possible, even the U.P. MAY experience some glorious weather during the season of Easter, 2011!! The seasonal planning display (including sign-up list and FAQs about the process at St. Paul s) is posted on the sign-up bulletin board in the chapel hallway. The display will remain posted through February 20 for after-pentecost, the last, long season of the liturgical year. 3rd Annual Women's Winter Respite Friday, January 28 ~ Sunday, January 30, 2011 Marygrove Retreat Center Once again, the Women's Ministry Council is sponsoring a NO AGENDA, NO GUILT opportunity to retreat from the hectic pace of your lives to refresh your mind, body and spirit, and to rejuvenate yourselves for the upcoming year. This is a time for yourself apart from your daily routine. You may use it for quiet solitude, for fellowship, to read or work on hand projects you bring from home, or try out one of the activities available. Last year we made prayer beads, colored Mandelas, hand quilted, knitted and watched movies. Some women tried their hand at beginning Prayer Shawls while others braved the cold for some cross country skiing. The Fayette State Park has a candlelit trail available on Saturday evening. We will meet at Marygrove Retreat Center on Friday. Plan to arrive any time after 4:30 pm. Bring a bag supper if you'd like to eat dinner at the center, or enjoy dining at one of the restaurants in the Village of Garden. Retreat ends after lunch on Sunday. Marygrove will provide three meals on Saturday, and Sunday breakfast and lunch. Rooms are complete with bed linens, feather pillows and towels. Bring your own toiletries, clothes and any personal activities you wish. Cost is $ Send your registration to Judy Andersen, 8605 Schaawe Lake 24th Lane, Rapid River, MI Women's Winter Respite Retreat Registration Name Address Phone Any special needs, including dietary Registration deadline is January 21, If you have questions please call Judy at or Coralie at
