2 St Paul s Is My Family : An Interview With Olive Sain, Part 2, by Burt and Sandy Purrington Last month, we read about Olive s early years growing up on a farm near Bruce Crossing, moving to Marquette with her husband Laurence and becoming a radio and TV star where she taught classes on everything from cooking to upholstery as a home extension agent for Marquette County. Both Olive and Laurence grew up in the Episcopal Church so when they moved to Marquette in 1943, they quickly found St. Paul s and joined. Olive s father was Roman Catholic and her mother was Old Catholic. Old Catholic, Olive explained, was High Episcopal, basically like the Church of England was at the time of Henry VIII. Her mother s church had the Stations of the Cross and the service was essentially the same as a Catholic service, but they had no pope over them. When her mother s family migrated to Bruce s, there wasn t any Old Catholic Church. Because the family would have to go by train to Ewen, Olive s family didn t get to church and she says she didn t get the chance that kids have today of learning all about the Bible. She was baptized in the local Catholic Church, but says, My dad dropped out of that church when they had a priest who wanted a better house. He told our parishioners that the Church comes first. He [the priest] didn t care about the family, the kids or anything else. My dad said, The way I live, my family comes first. And so, he left that church. There was a German Lutheran Church in Bruce s and my dad came from a German family, so that s where we went. Until, finally, after we had a car, we went to the Episcopal Church in Ewen. A little church. It had been a little school at one time and it was transformed into a church. So that s why we decided to be in the Episcopal Church because it was a little bit closer to what my mother and dad were used to as far as the service was concerned the Roman Catholic service. That was how I met my future husband because they were Episcopalians too. Olive and Laurence moved to Marquette to go to summer school and stayed at the home of the Burtons who were Episcopalians. The Burtons took Olive and Laurence to church with them. Mrs. Burton (Mabel) and her sister belonged to what was called Group C and they invited Olive to join them. People at St. Paul s, especially those in Group C, helped Olive and Laurence move in and we became good friends. Olive says there were more people at St. Paul s back then than there are today and some things were different. For example, she learned that you had to watch where you sat. We had a bad experience. We sat in a pew and somebody came along and said, Oh, you can t sit there; that s our pew. Things have changed a lot since then. Most of the women at St. Paul s belonged to a church group. They were organized by age and interest. And so, when there were things to be done for the church, for example meals or programs, they could call on a church group to do certain parts of it. Certain groups and individuals had specialized tasks. For example, one person always carved the turkeys. We had one lady who was responsible for a big coffee urn; NOBODY else could touch it. Olive says that much of the financial support for St. Paul s came from several wealthy families; the rest of us were just common laborers. There weren t too many active donors. Not like it is now. Back then, the major support for the church came from the wealthier families and others did their part through their labor. People accepted it that way and it all seemed to work out. Although Olive started in Group C, some of her friends in Group I told her she was in their age group and she should be with them. Well, I had mixed feelings about leaving Group C, but they were older. So I joined Group I. Over time, the groups became less specialized and they did things on more of an as-needed basis. For example, Olive says that when they were going to have a big dinner, the groups would each choose a job and divide the labor. Some would set up, some would cook, some would serve, and some would clean up and so on. When it came time for spring housecleaning, certain ones would volunteer to wash all the dishes; others would clean all the cupboards. When there was a funeral, different groups would take over. They could do whatever needed to be done and it was real nice. In later years, the groups were phased out. Olive says that for a time it was a challenge to organize and find volunteers for important church activities, but she and others decided they had to step forward and ensure that things got done. Next year, Olive will celebrate her 70 th year at St. Paul s. She remains an active and enthusiastic part of our church community and continues to contribute in countless ways not the least of which is simply her presence with us as we worship together. St. Paul s is my family, Olive says, and it always will be. Diocesan Convention by Dennis West Marquette and St. Paul s helped to host the 117th, Annual Convention of the Diocese of Northern Michigan, October Delegates to the Convention from St. Paul s were Dan Carpenter, Erin Jewett, Sandy Purrington and Dennis West. Also participating were Barb Carpenter, Arlene Gordanier, Pat Micklow, Burt Purrington, Kevin Thew Forrester, Rise Thew Forrester and Kayla West. Arlene and Pat had leadership roles in the Convention proceedings. Dennis West offered the Welcome, and Rise Thew Forrester then led a Friday night discussion that featured a video by Dr. Brene Brown on Vulnerability, Fear and Shame and Achieving a State of Worthiness. Participants were seated with members of other congregations in order to support discussions with new faces and voices. Saturday featured Bishop Rayford Ray s Address to the Convention. He talked about finding God in all of us and being open to the unexpected in order to know God and Christ. He also talked about the need to be open to providing Church in new ways not yet imagined. In the elections, Arlene Gordanier was elected to the Standing Committee for a three year term. There was only one resolution to come before the Convention and it was to allow small congregations to be able to act as a Committee of the Whole in lieu of a Vestry. Kevin Thew Forrester led two workshops, one with Bob Railey. The first workshop was on the Liturgy that is being developed in the blessing of same gender couples. The workshop began by reviewing the history of Resolutions, dating to Episcopal Convention in 1976, that began the progression of statements that led to the summer s action to endorse the liturgy that blesses same gender unions. The Liturgy will be available for use in Episcopal Churches by Advent. Kevin s second workshop was about Incarnation and Liturgy. Erin Jewett presented at the Convention on Youth Worship, providing a presentation about the youth camps and outing of the past year. She engaged the delegates in camp songs with movement, a stirring way to follow lunch. Burt Purrington presented on the Haiti mission covering the last seven years, highlighting the work of the Northern Michigan Diocese and specific congregations. Kayla West presented on the Finding Our Voice Conference that was held at St. Paul s in September. It gave the assembled an overview of the topics and insights about next steps. Sunday concluded the Convention at St. Paul s. The Delegates and guests heard a Virtual Presentation by Thomas Brackett on the topic of Growing New Churches. He pointed out the importance of verbs and adverbs in the Gospel, anointing, searching, comforting, binding, lifting up, giving and calling. He talked about how we are called to learn from one another and that change requires vulnerability and courage. Our time together concluded with the Holy Eucharist, which included Bishop Rayford Ray, leading us in a renewal of our Baptismal Covenant. The offering that was collected at our worship service was to be used by Harbor House and Room at the Inn. Next year s convention will be held in Escanaba, October

4 Stewardship Campaign by Dennis West The campaign that helps us to fund our programs is well underway, and will culminate on November 11. Last year 62 pledges were received, and we believe that we can build on that number in We urge you to consider what you can do in support of St. Paul s for Our aim is to have everyone participate at a level that they feel comfortable. Whether you are able to do $1, $10 or $100 per week, it all helps us to support our work, mission and operations. Please prayerfully consider what you can do in support of the 2013 campaign. In order to make your pledge, please fill in the last page of the letter that you recently received and drop it in the collection plate or give it to Dennis West, Geoff Smith, or Kathy Lenten. This page is also available at church. Thanks! St. Paul s Scrip Program by Ann Smith We continue to reap rewards in the form of convenience for our parishioners and money for St. Paul s with our scrip program. Thanks to a few hardworking volunteers we have managed to keep things going in Barb Carpenter s absence. To date the program has brought in a little over $4, for the church. If you don t know how the program works, it s easy. In essence you are buying gift cards. The church pays a little less than full value for them, depending on the percentage the business gives us. That small amount goes in the scrip account and keeps adding to our profits. If you have questions, please see Karan Hendricks, Ann Smith, or Sandy Purrington. Join the in crowd of scrip users and help the church at the same time. Stop by the scrip table on a Sunday morning and see how to get started. We also have some cards on hand so if you need something immediately just ask, we may be able to help you. Reminder: Scrip orders will be collected on Sunday, November 4 and Sunday, November 18. Treasurer s Update as of September 30, 2012, by Tony Pearson The following are some financial highlights as of September 30, 2012: Trust withdrawals at the end of September were $29,000. Income is short of the budget by $14,388, possibly due to vacations, while expenses remain on budget. Highlights from the Vestry meeting, October 18, 2012 by Mary Sullivan The date for the Annual Meeting will be February 17, And yes, that means a new slate of Vestry candidates! If you are interested in serving on the Vestry, or if you would like to nominate someone (please get their permission first) speak to a member of the nominations committee: Cathy Halverson, Karan Hendricks, Burt Purrington, or Dennis West. Passed a motion for the Treasurer to set up a separate checking account for the Healing Arts Center. This budgetary clarification will help the Arts Committee in planning activities for St. Paul s Celebrates the Arts activities. Tony Pearson presented the treasurer s report. Pledges are not coming in as expected summer s over, friends, time to make wood. Update on Burt Purrington's mission in Haiti Burt Purrington is currently in Haiti from October 24-November 14. He will spend a week in each of our partner communities: Plaine Mapou on the Island of La Gonâve, Crochu in the mountains north of Port-au-Prince and Madame Jacques on Haiti's Central Plateau. He extends his deepest thanks to all at St. Paul's and in the Diocese whose financial donations, material contributions, good thoughts and prayers support our work with our sisters and brothers in Haiti. And he looks forward to selling Haitian art, coffee and banana bark Christmas cards at St. Paul's Third World Craft Fair in December.

7 Welcome to Holly Greer, by Sandy Purrington St. Paul's is very happy to welcome Holly Greer back to our church family. Holly and her late husband Bill moved away from St. Paul's and Marquette 31 years ago, so many of us will learn for the first time, or at least more, about Holly's very interesting and productive life which she describes in her own words: Coming back to Marquette is like coming home again. I guess it's true that you can take the person out of the U.P. but you can't take the U.P. out of the person. Of course, I miss my friends, activities and church in Cortland, NY where I lived for thirty-one years, but there are so many wonderful things about Marquette; the beauty of the place, my family the Coles, my longstanding and good friends and not least of all St. Paul's Church. I have been welcomed warmly and I thank you for that. I am a native Midwesterner, having grown up in Highland Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. I attended Smith College, where I met my husband-to-be, Bill Greer, who was a student at Amherst. Upon graduation I went to NYC to work for the National Council of the Episcopal Church when it was still located at 281 Broadway. I spent one year in Ithaca, NY, serving as assistant to the Chaplain of Episcopal students at Cornell, an interesting and gratifying experience. Bill and I married in the summer of 1955 and moved back to NYC while Bill completed his training at General Seminary. Son, Bill (William James Greer, III) was born there and soon after, we moved to Grand Rapids, MI where Bill became the assistant to the Dean of what was then St. Mark's Cathedral. The children in the parish called him Boob-Boom because he was a Canon. John, Pete and Cathy were all born in Grand Rapids and it was there that we met and became friends with Tom and Brenda Ray. Tom stayed as an assistant for two years while we remained for ten. Our friendship with Judge George Hill resulted in a call for Bill to become the Rector of St. Paul's and we spent fourteen happy years here. While in Marquette I became active in the Women's Movement and served as Director of NMU's Women's Center for Continuing Education. I also became politicized by efforts to get a bike path to Presque Isle, (we were successful) and ran for a seat on the City Commission, a position I held for six years, serving as Mayor for two of those years. In 1981 we moved to Cortland, NY, where Bill had been called to be Rector of Grace Church and I took a position as Executive Director of the YWCA. I retired from that job in 1993 and became involved in various volunteer activities. Following Bill's death in 1998, I remained in Cortland until this year when I (and my children) decided I no longer needed a four bedroom, two story house with a huge yard and so here I am - back home again with my faithful companion, Kira, an Australian Shepherd of advancing age. I hope to become more involved in St. Paul's and in the Women's Center, both of which are near and dear to my heart. One thing I know for sure: I never want to move again! Thank you, Holly, and welcome back to your family at St. Paul's.
