6 Highlands United Church Notice of Congregational Meeting Please be advised that there will be a short Congregational Meeting on Sunday, May 29 th, 2016 after the 10:00 am worship service. At the meeting we will elect/appoint new Board Members and Chairs of the Highlands Standing Committees. Highlands Parking Shuttle Recognizing the increasing challenge of finding parking near Highlands, we will be offering a parking shuttle service on Sunday May 8 (G2 service) and Sunday May 29 (Spirit Singers Service) This complementary service will run from Highlands Elementary School (Fairmont and Colwood Streets) Parking is available weekends in the drop off zone in front of the school or along side streets. The shuttle (Capilano Community Service Bus) will park by the handicap parking sign in front of the main entrance to the school. There will be 3 departures before worship: 9:30, 9:40 and 9:50, and passengers will be dropped off in front of the main entrance to Highlands. Following worship the shuttle will make 2 to 3 return trips (based on numbers), with the first trip leaving 15 minutes following the end of worship and then 10 minutes after that. This is an experimental project, and if it appears to meet a need, we will continue in the Fall of Capilano Community Services has agreed to loan us their bus on Sundays for this purpose, and we will make a weekly donation to their program in exchange for its use. For information, speak to Sandi Parker or Bob Brown. 6

10 Membership Recognition, Re-Affirmation and Transfers June 5 Some of you were surprised to discover you were not on the membership roll when we had our congregational meeting a few weeks ago. If you have been either baptized as an adult or baptised as an infant and later confirmed in a different church or a different denomination you can easily transfer your membership in to Highlands. Some of you have been part of our congregation for a long time, and if this situation applies to you we would like to make it easy for you to become a full member. Then we will have a recognition of membership on Sunday June 5 th. Please send an or call Sandi Parker if you would like to become a member in this way. For those who have not been baptized or confirmed, we will have a workshop in the fall and a service of confirmation then. 12 The Interfaith Statement on Climate Change A message from Highlands United Church Climate and Environment Action Group We must reflect on the true nature of our interrelationship to the Earth. It is not a resource for us to exploit at our will. It is a sacred inheritance and a precious home which we must protect. United with the shared hope that arises from faith, we the undersigned believe that the means, desire, and will to care for Earth and all life can and will become action as our political leaders ratify the promises made in Paris -- and thus safeguard the greater promises of this generation and of all those to come. We therefore: Urge governments to rapidly sign, ratify and implement the Paris Agreement.... Insist on rapid emissions reduction.... Strongly advocate more funding for adaptation and loss and damage.. Urge the swift phase out of all fossil fuel subsidies.... Encourage faith communities to reduce emissions.... Call for fossil fuel divestment and reinvestment in renewables from the Interfaith Statement on Climate Change, signed by 270 leaders of various faiths from over 50 countries (including our Moderator Jordan Cantwell). You can read the full statement here: (sorry, incorrect link given in last week s Highlights) 12
13 Community Events A message from Josie and the Tai Chi Group: Our Qigong & Tai Chi group enjoyed celebrating the annual World Tai Chi & Qigong Day in our home gym at Highlands United Church on April 30 th, This is a huge global event involving over 80 countries and millions of people standing in appreciation of these two ancient health regimes that helps train our sensitivity to our own qi energy which in turn helps us strengthen our body, mind and spirit. Our group came together to help wrap our planet in a focused consciousness of good intention for all humanity. It was a profound moment. While our small group celebrated globally, we acted locally by raising over $ for Highlands Saturday Lunch program. 13
14 "Highlands' Men's Breakfast group spent last weekend in Likely BC, graciously hosted by Pete van Drimmelen at his family's lodge on Quesnel Lake." The above group shot is at Quesnel Forks where the Quesenl River is joined by the Caribou - in 1860 a gold mining town started here but was eclipsed a few years later by Barkerville. 14
