2 No.290 COMPARISON OF MY DAUGHTERS Do you like to be compared with your brothers and sisters? Of course not. I don t, either. My parents would never do that, but my grandparents often did, which I didn t like at all. There should be some difference between brothers and sisters, for we are all different from the others! So I ve decided not to compare my daughters with each other. However, today, I m going to compare the two. I ll never say which one is better than the other. I just want to tell you how different and how alike they are. First, about the differences. One difference is the level of their voice volume. My wife, Rika, noticed this when our second daughter, Ayumi, was born. Our first daughter, Shiho, made her first cry that was as loud as other babies, while Ayumi s was really loud, according to Rika. Even now, Ayumi s voice is far louder than her sister s (she has started to say something that sounds meaningful, although its meaning is not clear). Next, how they started to crawl is different. It took Shiho about ten months to roll over (this was a little longer than average babies anyway), and then she started to crawl. After crawling for about one month, she began trying to stand up. On the other hand, Ayumi seldom rolled over before she started to crawl. Usually, after a baby rolls over, he or she tries to reach something and then begins crawling. Ayumi was different; she sat up, found something in front of her and tried to reach it, and it was then that she started to crawl! And it took her only a week to begin trying to stand up. How different their steps for standing up were! Second, about their similarities. One is that both of my daughters like my glasses. Shiho would often take my glasses off my face and twist the frame. Now that I learned to avoid this disaster, my glasses are safely kept from Ayumi s reach, but whenever I hold her, she tries to get my glasses. Next, my daughters look alike. I don t usually feel so, but their photos show me that Ayumi does resemble what Shiho was two years ago. One of the reasons might be that my wife and I looked alike when we were two or three years old; whichever parents my daughters take after, they are sure to look alike (some say both have their father s dark eyebrows, which also makes people think that they look alike). As I mentioned in the first paragraph of this essay, I DO NOT mean to say which one is better than the other. I love both of my daughters, and I m quite sure they both love me. I hope this will continue even after they are your age! 3 No.291 HOW TO MAKE A WONDERFUL GARDEN Recently I have moved into my dream house. I haven t got used to living there yet, but I am now very excited to plan my dream garden. The planning is the key for making a wonderful garden and it is one of the great joys that gardening gives you. First off, you decide on a symbol tree. A symbol tree is usually tall, and it gives a particular character to your house. I have chosen a June berry which is supposed to be 3-4m. In spring, I will enjoy its white flowers. As the name tells you, it has a lot of sweet berries in June. I am dreaming of making jam, juice and wine using the berries. In autumn, its leaves turn into many kinds of red hues. I am sure the symbol tree will give me a lot of pleasure all year around. Secondly, you make a plan on where to put which trees or flowers. You need to plan around colors and hours of sunlight. Since my house has extremely white walls, my garden needs color. I am planning to plant pink and yellow roses, a purple clematis, blue hydrangea, green laurel and silver leaves. The main point is that many colors make you energetic or relaxed! Thirdly, you want to enjoy fruits of the trees you plant. I love eating!! That s why I have already bought a kind of Japanese citrus called cabos, and ordered two baby blue berry trees. I am going to buy two plum trees, and an almond tree. I think you have got the idea. I am able to taste seasonal fruits all year around!! As you can see, I am dreaming of making a fruitful bush or rather woods in my garden. It will have a good shade in about 10 years so that I can be relaxed there and keep my privacy. In order to make a garden like this, there are a few things I need to do right now. I have to remove weeds and tenacious horsetails disturbing my grand plan. Then I will cultivate and fertilize the poor soil to make it suitable for fruit trees. Finally, of course I need money to buy those baby trees, and time to keep them healthy. I am not sure that I will be able to maintain a beautiful garden forever, but just planning for the future dream garden is the happiest moment for me now!! 4 No.292 SHARED JOY IS A DOUBLE JOY; SHARED SORROW IS HALF A SORROW I was given a wonderful opportunity to take part in the Asian Youth Forum at the end of October. Here I d really appreciate it if you let me share my experiences. To be honest with you, I was so nervous before I left Japan for Korea, where the Forum was held. This year was the 100th anniversary since Japan annexed Korea, and it was just at the time the territory problem broke out between China and Japan. I know that there are various perspectives and thoughts depending on culture, country and individuals. But knowing little about them, I felt really unconfident. During the forum, in the daytime we had discussions about topics including how to promote juvenile exchange or how to create peace, and at night we just gathered together talking about different school lives among countries. I made friends with people from Korea, China, Russia, and Vietnam. It was a memorable event for me and I learned lots of things. At the end of the forum, one of the teachers made an announcement and said, Though thinking about issues of wars and politics such as North and South Koreas make me downhearted, to be together with all of you and to spend time discussing this topic made me optimistic. Also on the way back to Yamaguchi, Ms. Ota said When I first went abroad, I learned a human is a human no matter where they are from. Actually having finished the Forum, these two sentences were left in my mind. The reason why these two sentences were impressive was that they were exactly what I learned, too. As I was very nervous and unconfident before leaving Japan, I think people always face hard issues of politics and international society. Sometimes they affect our minds. When they consume us, we just feel powerless and are afraid of knowing. But during the forum I noticed that people help each other as HUMANS. I really thank my friends who helped me, teaching me Korean or talking to me when I was standing alone. I heard lots of opinions during the discussion. They broadened my view greatly. I felt that all of us live with a connection among people: we are able to live by hearing and accepting differences including ideas, thoughts and cultures. This forum encouraged me a lot. I would like to keep learning, thinking and sharing ideas more and more. There is a saying Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow. I wish juveniles or people s exchange would promote itself more in many kinds of areas including culture and sports. I wish that we could value our connection as HUMANS even between different cultures or countries. I wish we could walk together to the bright future peacefully. Thank you for reading. 5 No.293 MY DREAM VACATION I would like to travel to South America one day. Especially, I want to visit Mexico and Peru, because I m interested in the old Maya and Inca cultures. My dream is to see Machu Picchu someday, because it looks so beautiful in books and pictures. Also, I really love South American food, so I would like to taste the real stuff such as tacos. Even though I m a little worried about the safety in South America, it is my dream to travel there! By Erika Tamminen My dream vacation is to charter Universal Studio Japan with ARASHI!! I love both Universal Studio Japan and ARASHI. I have two things that I want to do.
