One: Please turn and face the east. <<The congregation rises, as able, and turns to face the east. Everyone remains standing.>> One: O Spirit who comes out of the East, come to me with the power of the rising sun and light and new beginnings. Everything that is born comes up in this direction: the birth of babies, the birth of things in nature, the birth of ideas and the birth of new relationships. Let there be life in my words,

2 let there be light on the path where I walk. Let me remember always that you give the gift of a new day; never let me be burdened by sorrow by not starting over. O Spirit of the East, let the colour of fresh rising in our life be glory to you. <<A drumbeat begins. The yellow cloth is danced in from the eastern part of the room. One end of the cloth is placed on the worship centre; the rest of the cloth flows outwards, facing the eastern direction. 3 3 and in thanksgiving for changes. You are the great coloured sunset of the red which illuminates us. You are the powerful cycle which pulls us to transformation. Great Spirit of Love, come to us with the power of the North. Make us courageous when the cold winds of autumn fall upon me, for we come like bears of the north, ready to receive the winds that truly can be overwhelming at times. Give us endurance for everything that hurts, for your living breath animates all life. Let us use the power of your spirit to sweet old patterns to bring change and challenge. O Spirit of the North, we ask you for strength and protection.

5 Music Let Us Build a House (All Are Welcome) (More Voices #1) Welcome to Behold (Design Team Members) Welcome. You have been welcomed to the land, welcomed to B.C., welcomed to Vancouver, and welcomed to the University of British Columbia. And now, welcome to Behold, an intercultural conference! Bienvenue à Face-a-face, colloque sur l interculturalité! We are glad that you are here! Nous sommes contents que vous êtes ici! Friends, we are many, we are one. Amis, à plusieurs nous sommes un. Because we are many, we have come from many different places and spaces to this one space at this one time. We have come from many different lands, communities, cultures, languages, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual identities, and cultures. And yet, we are all in this one space at this time. We hope that you will bring all of who you are into this space at this time. Part of what we bring here is linguistic diversity; and perhaps some of you speak more than one language. And, perhaps we can share in this language diversity together, as we welcome one another. In French, welcome is bienvenue. Perhaps we can welcome each other with bienvenue. [congregation repeats bienvenue ] (a person from the congregation): In Spanish, welcome is bienvenidos. [congregation repeats bienvenidos ] (a person from the congregation): In Swahili, welcome is karibuni. [congregation repeats karibuni ] What are some other ways in which we might welcome one another? Please feel free to share (The welcomes in various languages are repeated by members of the design team, and other people who are seeded At the end, invite anyone else to offer a welcome ) Welcome to all. Whether you have come from near or from far, please feel welcomed to this place. This gathering would not be the same without you. Indeed, we are many, we are one.

6 We have come from many different places and many different communities. Perhaps we can begin to share where we have come from, and who we are. Please feel free to stand up, or wave, or shout an amen, as you feel comfortable: If you live in the Greater Vancouver area If you know the theme for this Behold intercultural conference If you are part of the design team which has been planning this conference If you are from the province of Québec If you are staff of the General Council Office, Conference, or presbytery If you either a student or faculty at a theological school If you live in the United States of America If you live in Japan If you have been at Behold in Toronto, or RiverRunning in Winnipeg If you speak more than two languages If you travelled for more than four hours to arrive here If you are serving as one of the chaplains for this conference If you know at least one of the focus scripture passages for this conference If you a keynote speaker at this conference If you are a workshop leader at this conference If you have already read all of the materials in your registration package To all, a warm welcome. We, here at Behold, are diverse peoples gathered on the Creator s good earth. We are gathered and use multiple languages (such as English, French, and Swahili), and we also use multiple images for God (Mother, Father, Creator). As we saw earlier, we use multiple languages in greetings. And so, too, we will use multiple languages in our worship gathering times. We do not have simultaneous interpretation for this conference, but we will still celebrate the diversity of languages as a way of creating intercultural space together. Call to Worship One: Come, all you who are anxious! Many: We come as people who are fearfully and wonderfully made. One: Come, all you who are eager! Many: We come as people who are fearfully and wonderfully made. One: Come, all you who are weary! Many: We come as people who are fearfully and wonderfully made. One: Come, all you who are worried! Many: We come as people who are fearfully and wonderfully made.

7 One: Come, all you who are at peace! Many: We come as people who are fearfully and wonderfully made. One: Come, all you who have gathered! Many: We come as people who are fearfully and wonderfully made. All: We come as God s peoples! Let us celebrate the life within us. Let us celebrate Christ s presence among us! Let us worship God together! Silence Music We Are All One People (More Voices #141) Gloria a Dios! / Glory to God (More Voices #36) Building Sacred Space & Respect Together (Design Team Members) Because we have come from so many places, we may have different ideas of what it means to be in community together. We are co-creating sacred space together, and we hope to do this with respect, honesty, humility and through God s grace. We are called together to live with respect in Creation. In this Creation, we are called to live with respect with one another, but sometimes this can be difficult. Sometimes in the creation of an intercultural space, we might feel uncomfortable; we might feel stretched beyond the familiar. Some of us will feel most comfortable when God is named as Mother; some feel most comfortable when God is named as Father. Some of us speak English fluently, some of us speak multiple languages, and some of us speak very little English at all. Some of us love being in close community together; some would prefer to be left alone. Some of us are anxious about meeting new people; some of us would love to have conversations with each person in this room.

8 Some of us will always want for other people to finish speaking; some of us will always want to speak first. Some of us have binary notions of gender being male and female; some of us understand gender to be much more fluid and dynamic. Some of us may feel that we are using too much of one particular language; some of us might feel that we are not using enough of a particular language. Some of us would love to greet each other with hugs and kisses; some of us want to keep our distance. Some of us still aren t quite sure what intercultural means; some of us are excited about what we understand intercultural to be and want to discover more. We have come with many different ideas, assumptions, expectations, and theologies. As we come into this space, it is our prayer that we will offer one another grace and patience as we seek to live in a diverse community together for these next few days. And we pray that we might be able to do it with respect together. Ritual: Our Common Threads We come to our Behold conference with our our own cultural values, assumptions, world views, gifts, and insights. We come with with our whole selves: our physical senses, intuition, imagination, and intellect. And, as we co-create this intercultural space together, we do it through the offering of our whole selves and all of who we are. We pray that this offering of ourselves will be honoured in community. Many of you brought with you some yarn from home. This yarn that has journeyed with you reflects our different skills, colours, and textures. We have brought this yarn from home, just as we have brought our multiple cultural identities with us. We would invite you now to take one piece of yarn, and to bring it forward to this woven basket. We pray that you will offer your yarn to the community as a symbolic act of offering your whole self to this community over these next few days. We hope that we might all offer our yarn in deep respect and honour for our diverse community. <<Everyone is invited to come forward with their yarn, and place it in the basket.>> Music Let Streams of Living Justice (verse 3)

Silence Music Be Still and Know (More Voices #77) Prayer of Illumination Scripture Reading Romans 12:4 10 (projected in Spanish, Japanese, and English) Scripture Reading Music Isaiah 11:6 9 (projected in Taiwanese and English) Alleluia (Zimbabwe) Teaching and Learning The theme of we are many, we are one for our Behold intercultural conference emerged after the design team carefully considered the contextual realities in Vancouver, and in British Columbia as a whole. In particular, the theme emerged from the voices of the youth and young adults who are on the design team. Vancouver is a multicultural and multilingual city. In some schools, there are many languages being spoken; in some areas of the city, White people are the numerical minority. The Asian Canadian population is very high, and overall immigration into the metropolitan area of Canada s third-largest city is increasing. According to Statistics Canada, in the city of Vancouver, 47% of the population are racialized, and of this total, the majority are Chinese Canadian peoples. In addition, Vancouver has the third-highest urban Aboriginal population in Canada, behind Winnipeg and Edmonton. Approximately half the Aboriginal population lives in the

10 Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, with the other half live throughout the rest of the province. The picture outside of the city, and in the province of British Columbia, is quite different. In the rural areas and smaller cities, White peoples are the numerical majority. According to Statistics Canada, people who are of European ancestries (English, Scottish, Irish, and German origins) form the majority of the province s population. The province British Columbia is home to the second-largest Aboriginal population in the country, after Ontario; and in the province of British Columbia, First Peoples represent just under 5% of the population. (Please note that percentage-wise, regions such as Nunavut and the Northwest Territories have higher proportions of Aboriginal peoples in relation to the total population; British Columbia is the second-largest in terms of numbers of Aboriginal peoples). Some Aboriginal communities outside of the Lower Mainland are rural and remote. Across Canada, however, there is also a trend in terms of increasing urbanization of First Peoples: according to the 2006 Census, 54% of Aboriginal peoples now live in urban areas. All of this diversity forms context for our theme. The design team felt that the focus scripture names that we are one body in Christ, each with different gifts. We are all different body parts; we cannot be missing one, like a puzzle that we are putting together, and it is a beautiful whole thing that we bring together to form the whole. We are many, and one. We are called to love one another. In naming the body, it also opens up many different topics. For example, one image that the design team liked was the notion that there are body parts that are not healthy or working! Sometimes, we live with brokenness. Sometimes, body parts can be nurtured to be made healthy and whole. But to nurture and create wholeness, we need to name the ways in which the body is broken; we need to talk about the negative things. For example, there might have been intercultural conflict, hurt, and distrust. There might have been times when we have not lived together in unity, but have erected divisions and barriers among those in the same church community. There is indeed one body, and many parts. The design team felt that through this theme, we could hold up the uniqueness and diversity within our broad church

11 community. There is a dynamic tension about the different body parts still forming the whole, and centering the whole in Christ. By missing part of our cultural communities, perhaps we are missing a part of what it means to be church together. In all of our diversity, it is Christ who brings us together. But it is also more complex than that. The scripture also evokes images of diversity and unity. The scripture invites us to consider that there is more than one way of creating intercultural community. Within these diverse ways of creating intercultural community, we still are united in Christ. If the message offered is as simple as We are diverse, but it is Christ that brings us together, then the message is not complex enough! It is not as simple as Christ loves us, and therefore we are one; rather, it is that Christ loves us and honours our many differences in the creation of community. In naming the oneness, we also need to name the difference. The design team felt that there is a nuance in terms of how this diversity manifests itself in church. There are different paths to becoming an intercultural community. How can we all be challenged to move beyond our culturally comfortable communities into creating different kinds of community together? How can we honour the many gifts that each brings to community? We hear about this in our focus passage, Romans 12:4 10. Paul, the author of Romans, writes this letter in its context of Roman rule and the customs of Jewish culture. He also writes about issues in everyday life, including discrimination and dislike for one another. Paul encourages people to remember what brings them together, rather than what tears them apart. In the province of British Columbia, which is marked by social, cultural, racial, and linguistic differences, and in churches in the city, which are also marked by gatherings through cultural difference, what is it that brings us together? How do we honour both difference and unity? How do we authentically create intercultural communities, without avoiding cultural assimilation through unity? Through this scripture, and through this theme, we can gather keen insights and challenges to all. The design team was inspired by this scripture and the possibilities! We hear more through our secondary scripture passage, Isaiah 11:6 9.

12 One of the markings in the West Coast of Canada is the beauty of the mountains. Biblically, the mountain is a foundation, as the body of Christ, and many things come out of this that represent life. Through this scripture from Isaiah, we are also reminded that that we don t need to be afraid of each other because we are all part of the same body. In this passage, the design team was excited by the notion of the peaceable kin(g)dom, where the wolf and lamb, the leopard and kid, and the calf and lion and fatling all lie down together. In this, there is great diversity in all of Creation, and many people coming together who do not normally come together including groups that are normally fearful of one another. Particularly exciting about this passage is that the one who leads the creation of this peaceable kin(g)dom is a child! The affirmation of the presence of young people in leadership is an important aspect for the design team, in the creation of community. The notation they will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain is a reminder that we are called to be in a Christ-like community where we seek not to tear each other down, but where we are called to build one another up. Isaiah also offers a promise of what is yet to come a promise of hope, of a different kind of community, and comfort for those who life in fear. May we live this our together, as we explore we are many, we are one. Music Behold I Make All Things New (More Voices #115) Passing the Peace May we behold one another as we greet each other with the peace of Christ.

16 when the world was fresh from your hand, you made us neighbours one people in many kinds and lavished on us pleasures too many to name or know! For you we were a sheer delight. For each other, helpers and friends. And so you entrusted to us your justice and your joy. But we kept them for a few and denied them to many, creating worlds of poverty and pain. And so we broke each other s hearts. But you did not reject us. In the fullness of time you gave us Jesus, full of grace and truth. By his ministry of mercy, you restored us to each other and to you, mending our hearts and repairing the world. And by his Spirit you impel us even now to be for each other what he is for us pardon and peace, blessing and delight. For all your gifts, we thank you! And with everything that lives under, on, and above the world, we give you glory, and we praise your name! Music Santo, Santo, Santo / Holy, Holy, Holy
