2 親愛なる皆様 イースターメッセージ 司祭ジョンロイド ウエストチェスターを襲った先日の嵐は 強風と冷たい雨を伴い 木々の枝を折り 大雨のため地盤のゆるくなった大きな木々を倒し あちこちに被害の爪あとを残しました その嵐が止んだ後 暖かな春の太陽が降り注ぐ素晴らしい日がやって来ました この変化は 十字架に掛けられ 死を迎えたイエスが復活されたイースターをまさに象徴するようでした これを ご復活を実体験した当時の弟子達の状況に当てはめてみると 嵐のような陰鬱な日々はグッドフライデー ( 受難日 ) を表し その後の素晴らしいお天気はイースターを表す事になります イースターは もちろん 嵐の後の晴天よりはるかに栄光に満ちた荘厳な変化だったはずです 弟子達にとって いままでのどんな経験にも比べられない 感動的な変化であったに違いありません 私たちがイースターの話を読む時 弟子達が感動し 今まで体験した事が無い大きな喜びを持ったにちがいない と言う事を同じように感じるべきなのです しかしながら 私達は イースターの話を良く知っていると思っているため 弟子達の感動的な体験を素直に想像し 共感する事が難しいのです その当時の人々にとって 十字架に掛けられたイエスに再び会えたと言う事は 何にも勝る かけがいの無い大きな喜びだったでしょう 現在 こんな素晴らしいことを体験した人は誰もいないのですから 弟子達の思いを想像することは難しい事ですね 神は再び生き返られた ただ生き返られただけではなく 弟子達がそれまで知っていたイエス以上の方に出会えた と言う事です 言うまでも無く こんな不思議な事を信じるのは当時でも大変難しい事でした 12 使徒の一人であったトマスでさえも イエスの手足の傷を見て わき腹の傷に触らない限り 私は信じない と言っています 新鮮な気持ちで イエスに再び会えた人々の思いを想像してみましょう イースターはキリスト教の信仰の中心 私たちがそれによって生きる土台なのです 少し静かな時を持ち 神様に私達の心に触れていただき 魂を開いていただきましょう この素晴らしい日 私達の為に十字架に掛けられ 死者からご復活された日 私たちが神様を見 知るために目を開かせて下さる日 その昔 この貴重な体験をした人々と同じ気持ちを持ってイースターをお祝いしましょう 私達の友人 そして兄弟でもあるイエス また神である方に 私たちを新らしくしていただけるよう お祈り致しましょう イエスキリストはご復活なさいました それは正に蘇りのイエス様です アレルヤ司祭ジョンロイド 2

3 Dear Friends, Easter Message from Fr. John Lloyd Some days ago, the weather was of chilly, gale-force winds with sheets of rain. Limbs of large trees were snapping off from the force of the wind. Tall conifers were crashing to the ground, the soil softened by the heavy rain unable to hold the roots of the trees. All over Westchester could be seen the debris left by the storm. Then the rain stopped and warm, bright sun-lit days replaced the dark days of the fierce storm. Now, the weather was glorious! It could seem like a metaphor for Easter, the Day of Resurrection of Jesus Christ from his death on the cross. For his disciples, dark gloomy days portraying Good Friday; followed by glorious sunny days - Easter! Of course, Easter is far, far more glorious than this change in the weather, no matter how dramatic it has seemed. And to those disciples, there was nothing at all in their experience that could have prepared them for the emotions they felt. As we read the Easter stories, what we see above all is indescribable Joy! Joy of a quality never known before! We may have become so used to the stories of that first Easter that we find it difficult to imagine what they must have experienced. To feel the way they must have felt. No human being had ever had an experience comparable to the unbelievably joyous one of those women and men on the day that they met again their beloved Lord! He is alive again! No! More alive than ever! More alive in some way than they had ever known him! It s hardly strange that they had so difficult a time believing it was true. Like Thomas, who said, Unless I see the scars on his hands and feet, and touch the place in his side where he was wounded, I will not believe! The very familiarity of the stories may get in the way of our actually seeing with the eyes of our imagination what must have happened. Seeing in a way so fresh and new that we can actually feel the way those women and men who had known Jesus must have felt. But Easter is the very center and bedrock of the Christian faith, the faith by which we live. So let us take a moment to be still. Let God touch our hearts, open the eyes of our spirits. Let God help us relive with those witnesses of years ago the glorious day on which God opened their eyes to see and know so dramatically the One who died for us and was raised from the dead, Jesus, our friend, our brother, our Lord. Jesus Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah! 3

4 Happy 90th Birthday, Fr. John Lloyd Fr. John Lloyd had his 90th birthday on April 10. MJM members celebrated his birthday on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010 at St. James the Less. Fr. John looked healthy in high spirits on this special occasion along with his wife, Elisabeth and his family members. He received birthday messages from the members of MJM and the Board and the returnees from Japan. ロイド司祭は 90 歳のお誕生日を 4 月 10 日に迎えられました イースターサンデーの 4 月 4 日に MJM のメンバー 奥様のエリサベスやご家族の皆様で祝会を開きました MJM の理事やメンバー 日本に帰国したリタニーの方々からいただいた お祝いのメッセージを受取られお喜びでした ロイド司祭は大変お元気で 意気軒昂楽しい時を皆様と共に持たれました 4

6 OMOCHI WAS UUUMAIII! お餅おいしい! Omochitsuki was held on February 14th at St. James the Less. Fresh and soft Omochi right from the pounder was served with various seasonings. Families and congregations from neighboring churches were also having a good time. Thank you for those who made the event possible and enjoyable. 2 月 14 日に St. James the Less 教会で昨年に続き お餅つきをしました あんこやキナコ 大根おろし 海苔など出来立てのお持ちを堪能しました Tuckahoe の日本語教会からもご参加いただき小さいお子さん達も餅つきを楽しみました すずきうきょう スカーズデールのきょうかい にもちつきに きました ぼくたちがついたおもちはと おもちつき ( やまだよしと ) に おもちつきをしました きょうかいで やりました ぼくはうきょうとかわりばんこしてきねで つきました おもくなかったです それから おもちをたべました ぼくはなっとう しょうゆ のりとあんこを のせてたべました すごくたのしかったと おもいます!! 6

7 Some thoughts about America from the Advanced ESL Class by Elisabeth Lloyd What surprises me about America? This is my second time to live in NY. So I m going to write about my surprise when I came the first time. One of the things that surprised me was the sizes of a portions at restaurants. They were about twice the volume as in my country. And I was surprised again to see people ate it all and ordered something for dessert after the meal. I thought their stomachs must be huge. At the beginning, I ate half a portion. But as time passed, I gradually could eat more and more, finally, I could eat it all. At the same time. I gained weight! I thought my stomach was getting bigger and bigger like American people. My favorite Places to visit in Westchester In the historic Hudson Valley: there are two special places. The first is the Union Church of Pocantico Hills. The stained glass windows of the Union Church provide a unique view of two modern masters: Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall. I like Chagall. The Stained glass is in a circle in his church windows. I also like Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate. Kykuit is a prominent Hudson Valley landmark with architecture, remarkable gardens, art, history and spectacular scenery. Especially I like the garden. There are great sculptures eminent as the artists who made them, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore and Isamu Noguchi. I feel so gracious strolling in the gardens! My Favorite Place to visit in Westchester My Favorite Place to visit in Westchester is absolutely the City of Rye. Rye is in the east part of Westchester, near Long Island Sound. When I came to visit in Rye, I was momentarily under the illusion that I was in London. I saw the streets were lined with neat rows of stores and houses. It had a roundabout also. I was very lucky I could move to Rye. During the summer time, I walk to Rye town three times a week in the morning from my house. It takes about 30 minutes each time. Then I sit on a bench and I see a beautiful sea and Long Island. So I think Do my best today! 8 Last night I attended a fascinating lecture by Josie Oppenheim, a psychoanalyst in New York City. Reinterpreting Freud, she says there are three human drives: containment, creativity and immortality. The drive to contain is synonymous to death drive. When we contain something, we neutralize it, kill it, prevent it from getting out of the circle we ve drawn or the box we made. I suppose we always need to be creative, to think outside the little boxes we made for ourselves. We can create even a new reality. As you reflect on God this Holy Week, remember that we can not contain Christ in the little box; he rose again and the box was emptied. Oppenheim also avers there is a thin line between dreams and reality. In fact, dreams are as real as reality itself. This is also what the Bible says, faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen. (Hebrews 11). But if you can dream it, you can have it. You can even change reality through dreaming. Oppenheim, a member of the Adler family of artists, says she encourages her patients to have fantasies. Visions and dreams are the language of the spirit. Well, if you don t dream in the first place, how can your dreams come true? Freud s theory of human drives stem from his imaginary story of two sons who desired their mother sexually and so they killed their father. From this, came the theory killing the father image as a means to develop one s identity or fulfill one s self-actualization.. But they could not possess their mother for that would be a betrayal of their brotherly pact. So one had to elevate himself to the level of the gods---or when one becomes god, he can have everything. Isn t this a destructive drive as well? The desire to be like god was the motivation for the Towel of Babel. The people wanted to build a tower that reaches to the heavens. Through their monolanguage and efficient communication, they progressed to the point of hubris, pride. God checked out on them out and confused their language, hence the babel of tongues. From this confusion, they scattered all over the earth with multi languages, cultures and nations. As Christians of course, we understand reality in another sense. All men have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Sin separated us from the divine and from one another. We need a sinless One who can bridge the human the Divine and atone for our sins to the maker of us all. Christ becomes both the Victim and the Priest---the sacrifice and the reconciler. Through Christ, we have full access to God and to be like Jesus in faith, hope and love. God and the Human are now together in an ongoing dance of life. 9 昨夜 私はジョシー オッペンハイム氏によるすばらしい講義を聴きました ニューヨーク市の精神分析医であるオッペンハイム氏は フロイドを解釈して 人間には三つの動機 すなわち抑制 ( 包み込み ) 創造 不死があると言います 抑制動機は死の動機と同じ意味を表し 私たちが何かを包み込む あるいは囲い込むとき その対象の効力を失わせ 自分たちが描いた円 ( 囲い ) から あるいは自分たちが作った箱から出すまい とします 私たち人間は常に創造的であり 自分たちのために作った箱の外で考える必要があると思います そうすることで 私たちは新しい現実が見えてきます この聖週に神さまを黙想する時に 私たちはキリストを小さな箱に閉じ込めることはできないことを覚えていてください イエスは甦り その箱 ( 墓 ) は空でした オッペンハイム氏は現実と夢の間には細い線が 1 本あるのみだ と断言します 事実 夢は現実と同じくらいリアルなものです これは聖書も語っているところです 信仰とは望んでいる事がらを確信し まだ見ていない事実を確認することである ( ヘブライ人への手紙 11 章 ) 夢をみることができれば その夢は現実になりうるのです 私たちは 夢を通して現実を変えることもできます オッペンハイム氏は 画家のアドラー家のひとりなのですが 患者たちに空想を描くように励ますそうです 展望 ( 未来を思い描くこと ) と夢はその思いを表す言葉 ( 表現方法 ) であると言えます 確かに 夢を持たなければ どうしてその夢を実現できるでしょうか? フロイドの 人間の動機に関する理論は 二人の息子が彼らの母親を性的に欲し そのために父親を殺す という彼の架空の物語に由来します これから 父親像を殺す ことがアイデンティティを発達させるため あるいは自己実現の完成のための手段である という理論が出てきました しかし彼らは兄弟としての約束を裏切ることになるので母親を所有することはできませんでした そこでひとりは神の高みまで彼自身を引き上げなければならなっかったのです 人間が神になれればすべてのものを所有することができるというわけです これも破壊的な動機ではありませんか? 神のようになりたいという望みが バベルの塔建設の動機でした 人々は天に届く塔を造りたかったのです 当時人々は一つの言語を使っていたので コミュニケーションがたやすくでき 塔の建設が進みましたが 人々はそれを誇り 驕り高い不遜な気持ちになりました そこで神が介入し 彼らの言語を多様化して混乱させました それは もろもろの舌のバベルー混乱 でした この混乱から人々は多様な言語 文化 国家をもって世界のあちらこちらへと散っていきました クリスチャンは もちろん現実を別な意味で理解します すべての人間は罪をおかし 神の栄光にはとても及びません 罪が私たちと神の間を隔てています 人間と神の間に橋をかけ 私たちの罪をすべての創り主である方にあがなってくれる罪なき方が私たちには必要です キリストは犠牲者であると同時に祭司です ご自身が犠牲の捧げものであり 和解をもたらす方でもあるのです キリストを通して 私たちは神へ近づくことができます そして信仰 希望 愛のうちに イエスのようになること へと近づくことができます 神と人類は 聖歌にもあるように 命のダンスを今も ともに踊っているのです フレッド ベルガーラ司祭 (MJM ボードメンバー ) 9

10 長い間 MJM の理事を勤められたチャリーバトラー氏が 1 月 16 日に亡くなられました バトラー氏は MJM の発展と改革にお働きいただきました 以下に彼の側面を知る事が出来る Scarsdale Patch Newspaper からの記 を 介します チャリーのご をお祈りいたしま す チャリーバトラー氏 1938 to 2010 David Eddy バトラー氏は 1938 年に 3 月 30 日に NY ブルックリンに生まれ スカ ラーシップでブルックリンの St. Francis College で学ぶ その NY の 軍 になり 1959 年から 1962 年まで となる 1980 年代にマンハッタンで PR 会社を設立したが 1960 年からリタイアーした 2008 年まで 日本の製鉄業界のために尽力し 自由貿易の為に戦った 2009 年 ワシントンにある 世界の製鉄業の事業促進のために設けられた貿易機関によりバトラー氏は Steel Man of the Year に ばれた 夫人のクリステインが亡くなる 1998 年まで 31 年間の結婚生活を送った 1976 年から 夫婦で地域の活動に積極的に参加した 3 人の子ども達はスカースデールの学校に通い それぞれスカースデール高校を卒業した 1982 年 12 月 タウンの 会がナーサリースクールを るための を拒 したため Scarsdale Inquirer に公開 状を き 教を するタウンと戦った は12 の と この になったケースを 高 に してもらうように ち込み した 10

11 CHARLES BUTLER 1938 to 2010 Charlie Butler who long served on the Board of Directors of MJM died on January 16, Little did most of us know of his life as he kept the focus on how to grow and improve MJM. The following is taken from the Scarsdale Patch Newspaper. He will be missed. David Eddy Mr. Butler was born on March 30, 1938, growing up in Brooklyn, NY. He attended and graduated from St. Francis College in Brooklyn on a scholarship, and sent to serve in the Army National Guard of NY and as a reserve of the Army from 1959 to He worked in public relations, establishing his own PR practice in Manhattan in the 1980s. He led PR efforts in the U.S. for the Japanese steel industry, and has been credited as being a key figure in the fight for fair trade. He was involved with ever steel trade case that had to do with Japanese steel from the late 1960s until his retirement in In 2009, he was named Steel Man of the Year by the American Institute for International Steel, a Washington, DC-based trade organization devoted to promoting the worldwide steel trade. He was married to Christine Rodrigues Butler for 31 years until her death in Both were very active in the community since 1976, and their three children attended the Scarsdale schools, all graduating from Scarsdale High School. He fought religious intolerance in an open letter that appeared in the Dec. 23 Scarsdale Inquirer in 1982, denouncing the village board's rejection of an application to place a crèche at Boniface Circle. He was among 12 local residents who brought the famous Scarsdale creche case up to be tried in the Supreme Court, a case which they won. He was described as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor by his family. 11

12 時の流れ ひとときの幸せ David Eddy 私の母教会では聖餐式の時に ひざまずいてパンとぶどう酒をいただくのか 立ったままでも良いか と意見が分かれています これは興味深い問題で 自尊心と自負心の問題が含まれていると思います また 効率的に陪餐者の流れを早くしようする必要性から来る問題もあります 私は聖餐式ではひざまずく方を選びます 我々は 食卓の下に落ちたパンくずでさえいただく価値がありません と言う私の好きな謙虚な祈りにつながるからです しかし重要なことは ひざまずくことが効率的で無いと言う事実です 時間が掛かることに意味があります 私にとって 大切なことは 聖餐式でパンとぶどう酒をいただくために列に並ぶ ということです 人々が聖餐の為に入れ替わり 自分の聖餐をいただくまでの時を待つことにも意味があります St. James the Less での MJM の礼拝は出席者の数が少なく 静かで 殆どの場合 会衆全員が一度に祭壇の前にひざまずく事が出来ます ファーザージョンがパンとぶどう酒を一人一人に下さるには時間が掛かります その間 礼拝堂にはかすかな物音が響き 静寂で満たされます まさに その時 一人一人が キリストと一体である との思いを新たにするのです 私はいつも隣の人がブドー酒をいただき終えるまで ひざまずいたままでいるようにしています これはエチケットとしてだけでなく あなたとあなたの兄弟姉妹たちがそこにいる意味を知り 幸せな時間を長く持ちたいためでもあります CULLI G MAILI G LIST The Kiryusha mailing list is in the process of being culled. 13 Passing the Time, Passing the Peace By David Eddy One of the great arguments in my home church is the question of kneeling or standing for communion. It is an interesting argument, wrapped in the issues of self worth and self esteem. It is also sometimes based on efficiency, the need to move the communicants quickly through this part of the service. For me, I kneel. I like the prayer of humble access: we are not worthy to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But more importantly I like the fact that kneeling is not efficient. It takes time. Nothing is more unsatisfying to me than standing in line and receiving the elements. People are shuffling, you are very much aware of the person in front, you must move away. The MJM service at St. James the Less is not attended by hordes of people. It is quiet and the entire congregation can, on most occasions, kneel as one, at the alter rail. It takes time for Father John to administer the host and then the wine. The room has a faint echo and there is a stillness that pervades the space. It is then that one gets the intimation that one is one with Christ. I make it a practice not to rise from kneeling until the person next to me has finished receiving the wine. It is not only common courtesy but extends the peace that both you and your fellow brother and sister came here for. MJM MISSIO ER-SEARCH We ask to all of our friends and readers to assist us in our search for a missioner to lead this flock. We are blessed that Father John Lloyd has stepped in, once again, to guide and nurture us as an interim missioner since Kyoko Kageyama stepped down after ten years. It has been a period of growth for us in many significant ways. We are different than we were a year ago. Yet at the same time we recognize the limitations. If you know of someone who would be a shepherd to this flock, please let the MJM office know. 13

17 EWS BRIEFS 広島 崎の Y 遠山京子 100 を える広島 崎の が 4 30 から5 5 まで 国 の 拡 条 の 検 会 にあわせてニューヨークを れました 期間 の 々は 国 の会 だけでなく あちこちで われた による会 会また 学校 大学での 動も 極 に いました 今 も 5 年 の会 に続いて たくさんのMJMのメンバーが 訳のボランティアから の 得 そして観光のお供までお 伝いをいたしました 国 のロビーにおける 写真 は 6 22 まで 開 していますので 皆さんどうぞいらしてください 5 30 まで去年の MJMのニュースレターにも 介いたしました 崎の 戸季 ( きどすえいち ) さんが お だけ残り 写真 につめてご の経験をお をしたり り を って 客と 緒 HIBAKUSHA VISIT TO Y Kyoko Toyama A hundred strong Hibakusha delegation (A-bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) were in New York City to attend the United Nations Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference from April 30th to May 5th. They shared their testimonials in many gatherings, conferences, rallies and visits to schools and colleges with people in the New York area. Many MJM members supported them by serving as volunteer interpreters and assisting them in sightseeing New York. A photo exhibit of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki devastation and the current status of nuclear weapons and testing are open to public until June 22nd at the lobby of the United Nations. Please visit the exhibit. Mr. Kido, a Nagasaki Hibakusha and a graduate of Doshisha University, whose article appeared in the MJM newsletter last year will be there until the end of the month to speak to the visitors. Andrew Shirota was a guest with MJM in mid April. He is currently an assistant at St. Benedict Episcopal Church in Lacey, Washington.
