2 WHY Do We Express Our Thankfulness and Appreciation? In the past two November issues of this newsletter, we have been exploring the idea about thankfulness and appreciation. We looked at What are we thankful for and How are we thankful. This time around the question we need to ask ourselves is Why do we show our thankfulness and appreciation. It is when we understand the why, that the what the how naturally flows from us, and the thankfulness and appreciation becomes more meaningful. In Buddhism, we are taught that all things and all karmic conditions all exist and occur only because of the relationship it has with all other things and karmic conditions. Nothing exists or is independent of other things. By showing our thankfulness and appreciation, we acknowledge our relationship to all other things and karmic conditions which makes our life possible every single day. It gives us a sense of where we are in this world. Thornton Wilder states, We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures. When I was going to school in Berkeley, there was a message handwritten on the wall of a local coffeehouse joint restroom stall wall that said in essence, the phrase thank you never loses its meaning when said repeatedly. When it is used as a guide in one s conversation and allow it to be the anatomical framework of our relationships, it is amazing how we will start to discover how often thank you is said in return and how much more often we hear it in return. Not too many of us actually take the time to read some random thought on the restroom stall wall. We just do our business and we are out of there. After reading that, of course I had my feeling of relief, but also the sense of appreciation and so I told the wall thank you! Thank you to the person who wrote that and thank you to the wall for providing the space to allow this person to express his feeling. French writer Voltaire once wrote Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well. In that karmic interrelationship, it is important to acknowledge that. It is in that acknowledgement that we start to see life on a bigger whole and we start to see the why in life. The Buddha vowed to save everyone. Why? I truly believe that he felt that karmic bond to everyone through interrelationships, so he wanted to save everyone as a means through which he must have felt everyone was like his mother and father. As we head into another holiday season, let us consider why we say thank you. Through all the craziness, food, and fellowship over the next couple months, don t forget to celebrate the relationship that we have to every thing, big and small, seen and unseen in our life. Rev. David Fujimoto 2
3 President s Corner Aloha Everyone! What a wonderful experience we had meeting the community who brought their opala for recycling at our Going Green Recycling Community Clean-Up Day in October. Customers thanked us for being there as a convenient source to recycle, and our volunteers greeted them and helped them unload their electronic waste, batteries, clothing and household items, canned good and used eyeglasses. Mahalo to the volunteers who gave up their Saturday to kokua: Rev. David Fujimoto, Rev. Jan Youth, Claire Doi, Aileen Sato, Diane Yoza, Cliff Togo, Stan Sasaki, Duane Izumi, Gordon Watanabe! Many thanks to Going Green Chair Brandon Hee for coordinating the event who agreed to host the event again in October 2018! Hana hou! What a surprise! When was the last time you went to a surprise birthday party? Well, if you came to church on Sunday, October 8th, you found the temple adorned with red table cloth, flower centerpieces, and after the service when we have fellowship and refreshments, we surprised our minister with a special Yakudoshi Birthday Party! Parents Richard and Joyce brought pizzas and ice cream cakes and sangha members brought side dishes. We thank the folks who attended the party and shared, One thing I like about Rev. Fujimoto. Most people said they like his down-to-earth style of delivering his dharma messages and make it easier to understand. Of course, sensei said that he was so surprised with his party, and his best surprise was that his wife, Tian joined in the celebration. In fact, our sangha was overjoyed to have Tian spend the time with us at the party. Best wishes, sensei, for your yakudoshi celebration which is meant to ward of any bad luck and help you have a great year! I know that we are all amazed how fast time flies and Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year s celebrations are almost here! Many families who have lost loved ones have difficult times especially during the holidays because we remember our loved ones who were always there, but we have to move on without them. It s been three years since I lost my husband, and it s still difficult, but I look forward to families and friends gathering for some good company and good fun, but mostly giving thanks and gratitude for trying to live our best life. I feel very fortunate that I gain strength from the caring and compassion from our Mililani sangha and the very meaningful dharma messages. So if you know of anyone who could use some cheering up, please bring them on any Sunday to be uplifted with our Rev. Fujimoto s dharma message and meet and mingle with the most friendly folks! I guarantee that you will leave feeling happier and glad that you came. I love our sangha! Please join us for 3 parades: Nov. 11th - 10:00 AM, 71st Wahiawa Lions Veterans Day Parade, Dec. 1st - 4:00 PM, Olaloa Christmas Parade, Dec. 2nd- 9:00 AM Mililani Holiday Parade Hope to see you also on December 3rd at Soto Mission of Hawaii in Nuuanu for the Annual Hawaii Buddhist Council Bodhi Day Service at 9:00 AM. Please call me if you would like to carpool and need a ride - ph: Happy Holidays! 4 October was a quiet month for the BWA, but November is teeming with several exciting activities: November 3: C.A.R.E. Day at Mililani Hongwanji Day Care; 9:00-11:00; lunch to follow at Waikele Golf Course; contact person: Carrie November 4: Ehime Maru Clean-up; meet at the temple at 9:15 to carpool; lunch at Pho Saigon; contact person: Debbie or Janice November 5: BWA Meeting after service November 7: BWA Wahiawa Nursing & Rehab Center Visitation; meet at the temple at 9:30 to carpool; contact person: Rene November 18: OUBWA Convention & Seminar at Mililani Hongwanji; $10 for members, $12 for non-members; 8:30 1:30; contact person: Diane or Karen Mark your calendar for these important dates. Hope you will be able to participate in the activities. In December, the BWA will be holding their Membership Dinner Meeting on December 6 at the temple at 6:00. If you haven t signed up to attend, contact Diane or Karen. It will be a night of fun-filled activities and delicious food. 4
5 It s been a busy few months of Dharma School! Forty -six Dharma School students, family members, and friends attended our Fun Day and service at the Wet n Wild waterpark in Kapolei on September 23rd (and not the 16th as mistakenly noted in last month s article). Everyone had a great day look at all the happy faces in our photos! The Dharma School and Jr. YBA held their annual Food Drive on October 8th and along with donations from the E-Waste Recycling event the day before, we were able to donate 230 pounds and $25 cash to the Hawaii Foodbank! Our thanks to the Sangha and community for the generous donations to help feed the hungry. For our Dharma School activity, the students interviewed three elders who will be recognized at the Keirokai Recognition program. Our student groups held talk story sessions with Ethel Kawahara, Shirley Yamakawa for her husband Harry, and June Shimata for her husband Charles. We learned a lot about how things were like when they were growing up and how different it was than it is now no computers or cell phones! On October 15th, the Dharma School went on a field trip to the Kagyu Thegchen Ling Tibetan Buddhist temple in Nuuanu. We participated in their Chenrezik puja, led by Lama Rinchen. We noted similar references to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, but instead of a chanting one Sutra like we do every Sunday, we did multiple worship and meditation recitations in both Tibetan and English! It was interesting to experience a different sect of Buddhism and they also served a very delicious lunch afterwards. Thank you to Dharma School parent Dan Noia for coordinating our visit. In keeping with a Halloween theme, we watched ParaNorman on October 22nd for our Movie Day, which featured the main character, a boy named Norman Babcock, along with ghouls and zombies. And to end our busy month, Dan Noia led the students in mindful meditation with the help of their favorite stuffed animals. And thank you to Danny Noia for doing a great job and representing the Dharma School as a family service emcee in October. Here s what we have planned for November: November 12 Temple s Oral History by June Asato November 19 Movie Day (meet in the Ed bldg. at 9am, popcorn/snacks provided) November 26 Respecting and Understanding Our Elders And mark your calendars for our next Dharma School fun day activity we re planning on going bowling on Sunday, December 17th after service. More details to come. Please feel free to see Dharma School Co-Directors Roger Babcock or Claire Doi or any of the Dharma School staff if you have any questions or need more info. 5
