2 Coming Home to Makawao Aloha! Mimy and I would like to express our profound gratitude to the Makawao Hongwanji ohana for an incredibly warm welcome to our new home. We will never be able to repay our debt of gratitude to so many people who worked so hard to adorn the altar and prepare the minister s residence, the office, and temple grounds. After moving ten times in eight years, from Tokyo to Beijing to Shanghai to Los Angeles to Honolulu, then three different locations in Kyoto, back to Honolulu and now Makawao, we truly feel like we ve come home to the place we can call our home embraced by a new ohana of kind and gentle people! Every morning around 5:00 a.m., Nature s Alarm Clock wakes me up in time to see spectacular sunrises revealing the sublime beauty of upcountry Maui, the grandeur of the ocean, the majesty of Haleakala. Every morning, I am reminded of how lucky Mimy and I are to be allowed to live in the paradise known as Upcountry Maui. Namo Amida Butsu! Saying, Namo Amida Butsu, in gratitude for Amida Buddha s Compassion and Wisdom is central to the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji tradition. Buddhism teaches that our attachment to Self ( I, me, mine ) is the root cause of unnecessary suffering in our lives. Awakening to Amida Buddha s Compassion and Wisdom working tirelessly in our lives opens our eyes to the world-as-it-is, not the world-as-we-want-it-to-be to which our ego-selves insist we are entitled. What is Compassion and Wisdom? Simply put, Compassion and Wisdom is caring and understanding shown to other people in Hawaii, we know this heart and mind as aloha, unconditional love for all people, all living beings, and all forms of life. People who truly live aloha are always kind and gentle, and truly care about others, because they know Life doesn t always unfold the way we find convenient. People who truly live aloha always smile, often laugh, and give others the rare gift of kind eyes and a gentle countenance. People who truly live aloha quietly go about serving others, contributing resources, time, and energy without thought of recognition or reward. People who truly live aloha are wonderfully rare treasures that grace our lives with their presence, inspire us to aspire to be nicer to people and ourselves. People who truly live aloha think, feel, and say mahalo for the great ohana of life and the blessings of the aina. Continue on next page... 2
3 Continued from previous page... The path of Nembutsu, which simply means mindfulness of and gratitude for Amida Buddha s Compassion and Wisdom working in our lives, is open to all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, social position, income, spiritual ability, identity, or any other label that attempts to divide us from our fellow human beings. I look forward to being a minister worthy of this wonderful ohana, in this magical place called Makawao, and with your guidance and support, I aspire to share the Buddha-Dharma anytime, anywhere to anyone, continuing the Makawao Hongwanji tradition of a vibrant and engaged temple that is warm and welcoming to all people. You don t have to be Buddhist to be Buddhist in attitude and way of life. If you are ever asked to give an aspiration, here is one based on Jodo Shinshu Buddhist teachings you may wish to use. If you have any comments, thoughts, or suggestions, please feel free to let me know! Aspiration for All Occasions and All People Let us be grateful for this moment together, united by our aspiration to see the world as-it-is, not as-we-would-like-it-to-be, so that we may alleviate suffering for all beings. Let us be wise so that we can see both sides of conflict with clarity, and not insist that we alone are right. Let us be compassionate so that we can help all people without discrimination or judgement. Let us allow the Aloha in our hearts to manifest as Mahalo for the great Ohana of Life and the blessings of the Aina. Depending upon the situation, it may be appropriate to add the Hongwanji-specific practice of gasshō-raihainembutsu: In the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji tradition, we express our gratitude for All-Inclusive Compassion and All-Embracing Wisdom in this unrepeatable life by placing our palms together, bowing our heads, and by saying Namo Amida Butsu. Aloha & Mahalo in gasshō, Rev. 6 Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii HEADQUARTERS UPDATE 1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu, Hawaii Phone: (808) Fax: (808) Web: OFFICE OF THE BISHOP ISSUES STATEMENT AGAINST THE SEPARATION OF FAMILIES Statement Against the Separa on of Families (from the Office of the Bishop of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii) "Give me your red, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." In just a few words, the above, which is found on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, summarizes for many around the world, past, present and future, what America represents, promises, is and should be. As human beings, as people, we all need hope. As a Na on, are we going back on our promise to the world? I hope not. From a Buddhist perspec ve, both the process and end result are important. The procedure of how ma ers are handled is as important as the outcome. While the current policies of our Na on does not outright deny individuals and families entry into the United States, the procedure must be more compassionate and should not be tearing families apart. The bond between parent(s) and child(ren) is one of the most, if not the most precious rela onship a person can have especially when young. The policy of Zero Tolerance is too extreme. As Americans, I believe, we have pride in that we are a just and fair Na on. We may not be perfect, but in our interac ons around the globe, we have tried to uphold this standard which is becoming of a world leader. Our Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Tradi on has a long history of valuing human life, seeing the importance of rela onships including the natural environment and emphasizing inclusiveness as evidenced by the Great Vows of Amida (Amitabha Amitayus) Buddha and wri ngs of Shinran Shonin and Rennyo Shonin, our foremost Spiritual Leaders. Although the circumstances may have been a li le different, I also draw from the past experiences of a segment of our Buddhist Membership who because of their (Japanese) ethnic and na onal origins had to unfairly experience separa on from family during the last great world war. There was, and for some s ll remain, so much pain and trauma from the separa on. It is a circumstance that should not be repeated for anyone. Is it not one of our basic understandings in America that the family is the backbone of our Na on? We need strong individuals and families being guided by universal values to be a be er Na on and World. A quote from the Me a Sutra reads, May all life be happy. May they be joyous and live in safety. All life, whether weak or strong, in high or middle or low realms of existence, small or great, visible or invisible, near or far, born or to be born. May all life be happy. Let none deceive another nor despise any life in any state; Let none by anger or hatred wish harm to another. Even as a mother at the risk of her life watches over and protects her only child, so with a boundless mind should one cherish all life, suffusing love over the en re world, above, below, and all around without limit; so let us cul vate an infinite goodwill toward the whole world. As such, with this statement, I express my lament and express my ardent wish that we rescind the Zero Tolerance Policy and its ramifica ons which result in separa ng families to become a more just, fair and compassionate Na on. *The Statement by Bishop Eric Matsumoto is posted on the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Website. 6
