2 MINISTER S MESSAGE By Reverend Sol Kalu The Golden Rule Do unto others what you want others to do unto you or stating it in the negative way: Don't do unto others what you don't want others to do unto you Most people are familiar with this saying as the Golden Rule, a concept that describes a reciprocal or two way relationship between one's self and others that involves both sides equally and in a mutual fashion. The golden rule, with roots in a wide range of world cultures, is well suited to be a standard that different cultures can appeal to in resolving conflicts or misunderstanding and it is endorsed by all the great world religions, including Buddhism. It is often regarded as the most direct and general principle of ethics. All the world's major religions have quotations that state the golden rule, in different words, but nevertheless the meaning is the same. Buddhism has several versions of this ethical statement, among which are: Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful Comparing oneself to others in such terms as 'Just as I am so are they, just as they are so am I,' he should neither kill nor cause others to kill. And, a direct quotation from Shakyamuni Buddha Himself: One should seek for others the happiness one desires for himself. Perhaps its simplicity is what gives the Golden Rule its universal appeal and acceptance. Unfortunately, due to our blind passions and imperfection as unenlightened beings, the Golden Rule is as often violated as it is practiced. Due to greed, anger, ignorance, pride, jealousy and other forms of poisonous passions, it is an unfortunate reality that the base of human behavior is centered upon the gratification of the self or the ego. Religion or education in ethics and morality may help curb excessive self centered desires but when the right causes and conditions are present, we are capable of inflicting pain and suffering, both physical and emotional, on others to meet the demands of our ego self. The golden rule here doesn't apply, we will do as we please without consideration for the feelings of others. It is always wise to reflect on the fundamental Buddhist teaching of the law of cause and effect, that we reap the consequences of our actions, wholesome or unwholesome, in one way or another in a future time. The Golden Rule in both its positive and negative affirmation, serves as a useful guide in our actions towards our fellow human beings. To apply it requires us to know what effects our actions have on the lives of others, to be able to imagine ourselves accurately on the other person's place on the receiving end of the acts we do. We like to be respected by others, to be treated with kindness and consideration, so we should do the same. We dislike to be hurt, to be judged unfairly, to be manipulated or controlled maliciously, or our privacy intruded upon, therefore we should strive never to do the same to others. To violate the rule is going against fairness and concern that lie at the heart of morality. Namu Amida Butsu! Note: Rev. Kalu will be on vacation 3/1/15-3/29/15.

It is an abbreviation for to higan meaning reaching the other shore (of nirvana). Conducted during the vernal and autumnal equinoxes when days and nights are of equal length, it is a service of reflection when practicers should meditate on the harmony of nature and devote themselves to the realization of this harmony in our inner lives. During the week-long observances, emphasis is placed on observance of the Six Paramitas (precepts) which lead to the other shore. Paramita is the Sanskrit for gone to other shore. 8 THE 103rd LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY EMBRACE CHANGE By: Sharon Higuchi The overarching theme of the 2015 Legislative Assembly was the necessity for change. The myriad challenges facing temples, especially the need to raise funds to pay for assessment and maintenance of the temple while dealing with dwindling manpower, has reached the tipping point. Bishop Eric Matsumoto said that in the recent past some thought that change was mentioned only for the sake of change. But this is not the case anymore. He said, We have to change! I don t want to sound too pessimistic, but if we do not we will go the way of the dinosaurs or if you use Japanese history we might say we are heading towards the final days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. President Pieper Toyama said that the task is challenging because heading the Hongwanji organization is like herding cats. The challenge facing the shepherd of cats is to help the cats agree in what direction to go and help them move along in an orderly fashion as much as possible with cats. The business of passing 8 resolutions and 7 emergency resolutions was done in record time so delegates found that it is possible to have many different points of view and still come to agreements if everyone cooperates with respect and a sense of humor. Coincidentally, the reason that I became a delegate to the Legislative Assembly was because of change. While on the MHM Council, I voluntarily took on the task of researching our connection to Hana Hongwanji Mission. I learned that this relationship began 42 years ago when Bishop Imamura assigned Rev. Yosemori to take charge of Pauwela and Hana Hongwanji along with Makawao Hongwanji. For many years the Makawao sangha honored this commitment, donating funds and labor. However, about 10 years ago, it was learned that the original lease between Kaeleku Sugar Company and Hana Hongwanji had ended in 1970 and by the time Rev. Yosemori started to perform services for the Hana residents, they no longer owned the premises or the temple. A lawyer concluded that MHM didn t have the right to enter the premises without permission from the present owners and this situation was also a risk because there was no fire or liability insurance. Given this information, I started to appeal to HHMH for assistance in resolving this situation which placed undue burden on MHM. The good news is that all 15 resolutions passed, including Emergency Resolution Closing of the Hana Hongwanji. I thanked Bishop Eric Matsumoto, President Pieper Toyama, HHMH Business Manager Arthur Nakagawa and Roy Miyamoto for listening to my small voice calling for help. The bishop wrote me, Thanks to you it has been resolved. But this is truly an example of interdependence and how each person can play a role to bring about change. As we cats all pull together and follow Pieper s lead, let us remember WHY this is important to us as individuals. For me, I learned that adopting any type of temple project (and every temple has dozens and dozens) is exhilarating because I like to learn new things and while taking on new challenges, I encountered people I would otherwise never know. And WHY is taking on this challenge to change our temples important? For me it s because Amida Buddha offers unconditional love. Come as you are. This is the message that many seek today and our temples offer a place to hear this message. Ministers and HHMH also need to change because temples closing puts the existence of ministers and headquarters at risk. So let us all EMBRACE CHANGE! If you have questions regarding all the other resolutions, please MHM delegates Calvin and Sharon Higuchi. We will be reporting more in depth to Council members and at a March Sunday service.
