2 Eh! Howzit! Aloha Everyone! It is with great honor and privilege that I have the opportunity to share this moment with you! My wife Tian, Step-Daughter Khari and I are looking forward to meeting all of you. I look forward to sharing the life experience in the Dharma with all of you. It will be a great journey that ALL of us will be undertaking! Thank you to Rev. Jan Youth and Mr. Dean Sakamoto for helping me with this transition. I remember Mr. Sakamoto from when I was working at the Buddhist Study Center. I am use to calling him Uncle Dean, but I don t think I can do that now! So if I do, I am soooo sorry! I look forward to coming home to the island of O ahu, and yet I feel like a visitor because I ve been away from the island for over 7 years. So it will be great to rediscover places with my family and discover new places, especially in the surrounding community of Mililani. If anyone knows of great places to eat, I m all ears!!! Reverend David Fujimoto Once again, thank you very much for this opportunity to work with all of you. It s going to be a great time! I look forward to working together with all of you. I cordially invite you to come and discover what is in store for you. Whether you haven t been to service in a while, or want to invite your family and friends to Mililani, I extend my heartfelt invitation to see what all of us can offer you! Aloha Members and Friends, President s Corner I would like to welcome our new resident minister, Reverend David Fujimoto, his wife Tian, and step daughter Khari to Mililani Hongwanji and we look forward to them being a part of our Ohana. In the spirit of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii s 2015 slogan, we will embrace change, be aware, seek opportunities, and will assist you to ensure a smooth transition. I would like to congratulate Evan Babcock and Tyler Oshiro who were selected to participate in the 2015 YBICSE (Young Buddhist International Cultural Study Exchange) and I m certain that they will find the experience to be very meaningful and will further increase their awareness and appreciation of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Also, congratulations to our scholarship recipients, Tyler Oshiro (Kyodan scholarship) and Taylor Yasunaga (BWA scholarship) and I wish you both all the best as you pursue your higher education goals. To our Jr. YBA members, congratulations on your 58th Jr. YBA State Convention and thank you to the advisors for all your support and guidance that you provide to the Jr. YBA members. As a former Federation advisor, I know the value of investing quality time with our youths and young adults. Thank you to our advisors for your dedication to guide our Jr. YBA members. In Gassho. Dean Sakamoto 2

6 Please join us in a First Friday Mindfulness Meditation at 7:30-8:30 PM Mililani Hongwanji Temple, What is mindfulness practice? keep your attention focused on the work, be alert and ready to handle ably and intelligently any situation which may arise Thich Nhat Hanh, The Miracle of Mindfulness, p. 14. Mindfulness is our capacity to be fully present in our own lives, to be aware of what we are doing as we are doing it. As we develop our awareness, an inner stillness naturally grows. We are better able to embrace the world, better able to respond wisely and lovingly. If we are not mindful, we are split, and disconnected from the life energy that is in us and in the world. Mitchell Ratner, Dharma Teacher, Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center If you continue this simple practice every day you will obtain some wonderful power. Before you attain it, it is something wonderful, but after you attain it, it is nothing special Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner s Mind, p. 43. *** Our Friday evening will have a guided sitting meditation, a walking meditation and some time for dharma sharing. Steve Chinen will be leading these meditations. Anyone with an interest in the practice of mindfulness is welcomed to join the sitting; no experience is necessary.
