2 What is YOUR Relationship With Amida Buddha? On most mornings, I start my day either in front of my Ōbutsudan or the temple meditating and chanting Shōshinge. For me, it is my time to develop and maintain my relationship with Amida Buddha. On Sundays, many of you go to church services to hear a sermon and sing. That is how many cultivate their relationship with their faith. In the Jodō Shinshū, chanting doesn t give us any super natural powers, nor does it rectify any wrong doings, or grant our petitionary prayers. What it does do is open our hearts and minds to accept our faith and allows us to express our faith and gratitude to Amida Buddha. For Shinran, our faith does not exist without chanting. In his writings he states, The True Faith is necessarily accompanied by the utterance of the Name. In essence, Shinran makes the recitation of Nembutsu an existential condition to which chanting and Nembutsu recitation is not a practice, but an exclamation of our appreciation and gratitude for the deep awareness that the Buddha will always embrace us and not refuse us. It is the true essence of our faith and allows us an active role in living a life of appreciation and gratitude. Our compassion deepens and with it comes a better understanding of our place in the world. That place is in being one with Amida s Primal Vow. It is through the recitation of the Nembutsu that we develop and nurture our faith. It is in the active hearing and recitation that we take away each Sunday, this religious experience, that gets nurtured and we have the opportunity to take it home and implement it into our own lives, and then we get a deeper sense of what true gratitude is. True gratitude is rooted in the Nembutsu and allows us to be mindful and see much more than the tip of the iceberg. We become awaken to the karmic conditions both seen and unseen that were just right for the situation to happen. Nembutsu allows us and reminds us to slow down in life and see all that life offers us in this crazy world we live in. It allows us the opportunity to savor the moments both large and small in life. Let us seize the moment and let us together nurture our relationship with Amida Buddha through the Nembutsu. Rev. David Fujimoto 2

3 Aloha Mililani Hongwanji Ohana! We must treasure our ministers as they strive to guide us and help our temples to thrive with all the changes that surround us every day. While our Hongwanji theme for this year is, Embrace Change: Harmony - Accept Differences, it truly exemplifies the colorful differences we experience meeting different ministers, and how much we appreciate their care and compassion, which leads me to share with you a bright spot in our Oahu District. On April 23rd, our Oahu District Kanji (District Chairperson) Rev. Kojun Hashimoto of Wahiawa Hongwanji, and Rev. Mariko Nishiyama of Pearl City Hongwanji, met with our Lay Leaders from Aiea, Mililani, Pearl City, Wahiawa, Waialua, and Waipahu, to talk story about ministers concerns and sangha and temple issues. Interesting, inspiring, eye-opening, and we also laughed a lot. Everyone enjoyed our 2-hour session and are looking forward to our next opportunity to share our appreciation to our ministers. The Bon Dance Planning is going gangbusters and I am personally so happy that we can enjoy chicken hekka and fried noodles and kalua pig and cabbage on Friday night! Of course, the food trucks on Saturday night are a treat too! The Craft Fair is back and we always love the Silent Auction, and Country Store! Mahalo to all the volunteers and hope many more will sign up for this year! You might have missed a fun night at Mililani Hongwanji on April 21 when we celebrated Mililani Town s 50th Anniversary with good food, good company and awesome fireworks! Mahalo to organizer, the ever-faithful June Asato. The Gotan-e Service on May 20th, 9:00 AM, at Waipahu Hongwanji was a huge success with the touching speaker, Laurie Rubin, and the wonderful songfest led by Ministers Hashimoto, Nishiyama, Yagi, Fujimoto, and Soga! Shinran Shonin was probably so happy to see his followers emphasizing the meaning of Jodo Shinshu through the dharma service and singing gathas. Hana Hou! Let s do it again. We had soooo much fun at our Oahu Lay Association Buddha Bowling Bash on May 20th, at Aiea Bowl, followed by food and relaxation at Aiea Hongwanji, brought out 45 participants! That s 10 more than last year. What a great feeling to hang out with members young and old from our Oahu Temples. Memorable! Next event is July 2nd, Metta Mini Golf! Hope to see you there! Fellowship and fun, we re proud to be Hongwanji! Finally, we are asking for resolutions for our upcoming Lay Convention and the Bishop Selection Committee has started the nomination process. Stay tuned! We are always very grateful for your support for Mililani Hongwanji and interest in spreading the dharma! Me ke aloha pumehana, In gassho, Rene President s Corner Rene Mansho 3

4 Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii HEADQUARTERS UPDATE (Go to Mililani Hongwanji s website for complete update.)( COMMITTEE ON SOCIAL CONCERNS From: Dean Sakamoto, Chair of the Committee on Social Concerns The Office of the Bishop and the Committee on Social Concerns (CSC), together, have been in contact with temple ministers and presidents for flood damage assessments on the Island of Kauai and Oahu and for volcanic disaster related impacts on the Island of Hawaii. While we have not received reports of any temple damages, unfortunately, we have been advised that some temple members from Kauai have been impacted by the flood and several temple members on the Island of Hawaii have been impacted by the volcano disaster. Omimai, a Japanese custom that is often used to enquire (inquire) and call or visit someone who is ill, such as when visiting someone in the hospital. The CSC uses the term Omimai to reach out and respectfully express our concern to a member (or a temple) who have experienced some type of unexpected hardship such as property damage from a disaster. At the May 5th Board of Directors meeting, the CSC reported the following Emergency Disaster related actions (coordinated with the Office of the Bishop): A. A donation of $4,000 to Kauai Hongwanji Council (KHC) with KHC to determine and distribute funds to organization(s) and/or individual(s) working towards flood disaster relief efforts on Kauai. Suggested list of organizations was provided by CSC to KHC. B. A donation of $1,000 (via Kapaa Hongwanji) to the Hanalei Nihonjin Kai Cemetery (5013c) damaged by flood. Kapaa Hongwanji will coordinate and distribute funds. C. Omimai of $500 to a Kapaa Hongwanji member affected by the flood (property flooded). D. Omimai of $500 to a Kapaa Hongwanji member affected by the flood (property flooded). E. Omimai of $500 to a West Kauai Hongwanji member affected by the flood (property flooded). F. A donation of $1,100 to the Hawaii State VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii continues to assess the volcano disaster impacts to our members (and temples), and because of the unpredictable nature and the potential damages that an active volcano may cause, this assessment will take some time as conditions continue to change over time. We have initially requested the Hawaii Island temple ministers and presidents at Puna Hongwanji and Hilo Betsuin to keep the Office of the Bishop and the CSC informed as information becomes available, and also to provide assistance to those in need to the extent that a temple or a member is able to provide. At this time, the CSC is not planning to set-up a special collection and will rely on available funds from the Social Welfare Fund which is replenished through donations from annual Social Concerns fund drives. We are grateful for the generous donations from our members and the CSC will continue to monitor the fund balance to ensure that a minimum level remains available in the fund, especially considering the 2018 Hurricane season will approach soon. It is understandable that members may want to make a donation with good intentions to help, and our Hawaii Island committee representative, Mr. Ken Okimoto, advises: Before you donate, pay attention to what kinds of donations are requested; be sure who or what responsible group is willing and able to handle your donation; don't just donate whatever to whoever. Monetary donations are usually quicker, easier to coordinate, and allows maximum flexibility for the recipient to meet unmet needs. It is the donor s responsibility to research an organization or a fund is valid and will be used for disaster relief efforts before a donation is made. If any assistance is needed, please contact the CSC. I would also like our members to know that the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii is an official member of the Hawaii VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster). The Hawaii VOAD consists of non-profit organizations, faith-based groups, and partner government agencies. Please visit: for information. Also, information on the Puna lava flow can be found at Disaster preparedness is everyone s responsibility. HONGWANJI JOINT CONFERENCE Don t miss out! Two hundred eight of your fellow members have signed up for the first ever Hongwanji Joint Conference from September 1st to 3rd at the Ala Moana Hotel. But don t worry there s always room for you! Registration is open until July 20th. Forms are available on the Hongwanji website or from your temple president. The theme, Embrace Change Harmony (Accept Differences) gives you the opportunity to select from a wide variety of workshops. Express harmony in music with taiko, chanting, ukulele, and gatha singing. Deepen your awareness of harmony in Buddhism by learning Buddhism through contemporary songs, by attending a panel of ministers who will speak on peace and harmony in Buddhist teachings, by participating in a discussion of Monshu Kojun Ohtani s new book, or by taking a photography session and learning to see with fresh vision. You can explore harmony in society in workshops on issues being addressed by our social concerns committee, on LGBTQ awareness, on green Hongwanji, and on Islam in a panel presentation by members of the Manoa Mosque. These are just a sampling of the workshops available. We hope you ll take advantage of these opportunities to deepen your awareness and sense of interconnectedness. We are so fortunate to have so many people willing to share their skills and knowledge with us. Of course, in addition to services and workshops, there s the opportunity to talk story with your friends from across the state.
