2 The Gladdened Heart For several weeks now, I have been following the Oprah and Deepak 21-Day Meditation Experience. This particular experience is entitled Manifesting Grace through Gratitude. Grace is a word that has a sort of Christian connotation, however, through this experience, it is an expression of great love or how one carries one s self in compassion. It is that feeling one receives or gives when we forgive. This feeling of grace is being embraced by all things both seen and unseen, big and small, direct and indirect, at all times. The Buddha s compassion is like that, embraces us at all times. We live today in this very moment, due to the grace of many things. It is a gift that often times goes unnoticed and unappreciated. The expression of appreciation to this grace is none other than Namo Amida Butsu. Rev. Gyomay Kubose writes, This realization of oneness. It involves the highest type of communication and respect. IF your life is realized in this sense, you would see that the whole world supports you. You exist because others; other support your life. This totality, this oneness evokes a gratitude and a great joy beyond explanation. This oneness is none other than Amida Buddha. I exist because of Namo Amida Butsu, and Namo Amida Butsu exists because of me. It is when we come to this realization, we come to see the greatness of gratitude. One of the most important Swiss theologians of the 20 th century said, joy is the simplest form of gratitude. It is not in getting that new toy, or getting your way, it s simply enjoying the sunset and being one with that event. When we are angry or upset, stressed or tired, we are unable to feel this gratitude. In return, we are unable to return this gratitude to others. When we are able to let all that go, then and only then, are we able to accept gratitude and return gratitude to others. The realization that we are supported by others, knowing that we should be content with life, no matter what cards life deals with, that feeling of safeness being embraced in the Buddha s Infinite Compassion is the advent of what the Buddha calls the Gladdening of the Heart. When this happens, we don t look for things to be grateful for, we allow grace to naturally turn into Namo Amida Butsu, and gratitude prospers inside of us. Melody Beattie writes, Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. As we live each day, let us think of what gladdens our hearts, why does it gladden my heart and give it some love and attention. Rev. David Fujimoto 2

3 Aloha Everyone! President s Corner Wow! Congratulations to our Mililani Hongwanji Kyodan, Sangha, and the entire Ohana, for another spectacular Obon Celebration. The yagura set up gang, Bon Committee Planning Meetings, the Thursday night food prep chopping meats and vegetables, special Sunday evening Hatsubon Service ( memorial for families who lost a loved one in the past year) the Lantern Parade, managing traffic control, Reverend David Fujimoto opening both Friday and Saturday nights with the Sanbujo chant, welcoming everyone with a shower of flowers, friendly greeters at the Choba/Bon Towels table, Ewa Fukushima Group, and Okinawan group, Bon Dance Teachers, homemade goodies like Mango Chutney and Pickled Onions and crafts at the Buddhist Women s Association Country Store, selling andagi, plate lunches, spam musubis, saimin, Portuguese bean soup, the fabulous Silent Auction, the valuable First Aid Station, the Sunday yagura take down and temple clean-up, whew! Our 2017 Bon Dance drew large crowds and temple members, families and friends enjoyed our annual tradition of remembering our ancestors with fellowship, dancing, ono-liscious grinds, and meeting up once a year with folks you don t see during the year. 4 Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii HEADQUARTERS UPDATE MESSAGE FROM BISHOP ERIC MATSUMOTO Seek guidance! In this time of uncertainty brought about by nuclear threats, racism, hate, and violence, let us go to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha for guidance. The Buddha of All-Inclusive Wisdom and All-Embracing Compassion-Amida Buddha, in the spirit of True Equality, respects and loves all life equally and thus aspires for the enlightenment of all existence. May we take refuge and seek inspiration in this Great Wisdom and Unconditional Compassion. The Dharma emphasizes that Hatred is not overcome by hatred. Hatred is overcome by love. This is an ancient Truth and Anger creates anger Revenge can only be overcome by abandoning revenge The wise seek neither victory nor defeat. May we seek the Wisdom of the Dharma/Teachings which is expansive as the great oceans. The Sangha of our Jodo Shinshu Spiritual Leaders of the past three generations have shared important insights to harmonious living in hopes that there will be more peace in the world. They have emphasized that a person s nobility is based not on birth, caste or race, but upon a person s actions. Further, the preciousness of life. Last, but not least, the interdependent nature of existence in which we are all truly interconnected and interrelated. In these troubled and turbulent times, as I ponder on what I can do, the first matter at hand is to self-reflect and realize how easily I am swayed by negative thoughts, emotions and impulses too. Another is to be aware of the fact that our true enemy is often not an external enemy, but the internal enemies of self-centeredness, arrogance, doubt, greed, anger and ignorance. Lastly, realize that if we want a change in the world, it is we who must change and that no lasting change will come about from anger and violence. Thus, as we aspire for a more peaceful world, instead of protests in which we clash, we should highlight the life and actions of people who have overcome discrimination, violence and selfishness in all parts of the world including areas that are currently plagued by extreme violence, terror and unhappiness. As we are illuminated by the Light of Wisdom and Compassion, may we realize that peace begins with each one of us and is dependent upon all of us. MESSAGE OF APPRECIATION FROM HONZAN Jodo Shinshu ministers and followers, We are pleased to inform you that the Commemoration on the Accession of the Jodo Shinshu Tradition to the 25th Monshu Sennyo, which began on October 1, 2016 successfully concluded on May 31, A series of 80 ceremonies were conducted to publicly announce that the Jodo Shinshu tradition including the title of Monshu, or Head Priest of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha Buddhist organization has been transmitted to our new leader, Monshu Sennyo. We are thankful to have been able to mark this joyous opportunity together with many, both inside and outside of the organization. Success of the event was, we are sure, due to the support from you and many others and for that, we are deeply grateful. Our next major observances at Hongwanji are the 850th Anniversary of Shinran Shonin s Birth scheduled for 2033 and the 800th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Jodo Shinshu Teaching the following year. Taking advantage of the energy following our recent commemoration, we would like to continue in our efforts toward the realization of a society of mutual respect. In the dharma message addressed on the first day of the Commemoration of Accession, Monshu Sennyo presented a concrete description of a way of living as a Jodo Shinshu follower. He reiterated this topic in his message at the conclusion of the series of services stating, Although it is impossible for us to conduct completely pure good deeds like the Buddha [because of our human desires], it is still important for us to make the best of our efforts to carry out an ideal Buddhist way of living in every aspect of our life as much as possible. 4

5 To contribute toward the realization of a society in which everyone can live peacefully, let us try to actualize Monshu s guidance by not only entrusting ourselves to but also share the Buddha Dharma with others. In doing so, it is also essential for us to help one another and continue in our efforts to repay even a little of the benevolence we have received from the Buddha and innumerous invisible helping hands. With asking for your continuous support and advice, we would like to conclude our message of gratitude. Once again thank you very much. Respectfully yours, Governor General IWAGAMI Chiko Commemoration of Accession Headquarters Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha Head Regent HONDA Takao Commemoration of Accession Headquarters Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha 2017 YOUNG BUDDHIST INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL STUDY EXCHANGE (YBICSE) Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii participants and chaperones enjoyed a most enjoyable and educational trip to Japan from July Youth participants included Alexander Babcock from Mililani, Hokulani Iseri from West Kauai, Janine Iseri from West Kauai, Dustin Iwasaki from Hawaii Betsuin, Blayne Nakasone Sakata from Puna and Waipahu, Aaron Nonaka from Aiea, Jared Nonaka from Aiea, Kelli Okayama from West Kauai and Chloe Oshiro from Mililani. Chaperones were Rev. Tomo Hojo and Mrs. Elaine Saiki from West Kauai. The Oahu contingent was met by Rev. Hojo and had a wonderful sendoff from Rev. and Mrs. Umitani at the Honolulu International Airport. The Kauai contingent and Mrs. Saiki went ahead to the International Airport and waited for the Oahu group. After arriving at Kansai (Osaka), the group took an express train to Kyoto. Participants were lodged at Monbo Kaikan while in Kyoto. In Kyoto the group participated in the Hongwanji program. Going to temple at 6:00 a. m., cleaning the temple on hands and knees and finding various shapes cut into the wooden floors were some of the things that the participants experienced. Several from BCA, Canada and Brazil participated in the Confirmation Rites performed by the Former Gomonshu Koshin Ohtani. The group also met Gomonshu Kojun Ohtani and had a group picture taken with his Eminence. Historical sites such as Mt. Hiei and Otani Mausoleum were visited. The group also experienced a cultural tea ceremony. A one-day trip by train to Hiroshima included a visit to Hiroshima Betsuin and the Peace Memorial Museum and Park. After Hiroshima, the participants went on their homestay for three days either in Shiga or Osaka Prefectures. Heian High School was visited and the group participated with the Heian students making origami, playing string games, talking story, etc. The Hongwanji program concluded with a closing ceremony and program sharing by groups. It was a sad parting for all the participants; however, the many friendships they made can be continued using today s social media, i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Face Time, etc. The Hawaii delegation stayed an extra night in Kyoto for further sightseeing before departing for Tokyo by Shinkansen. Upon arrival, the group decided to go shopping and visited the Ooedo Onsen in Odaiba. Rev. Hojo and the all of the boys experienced a true Japanese onsen. The girls and Mrs. Saiki experienced the foot bath. In Tokyo, the group visited Tsukiji Fish Market and attended Tsukiji Hongwanji s morning service. The history of the temple was explained and the pipe organ was played for the group. Did you know that a pipe organ has 2,000 pipes? After that, the Hawaii group spent time at Tokyo Disneyland; they also had dinner with the BCA and Canada delegations. Rev. Jay and Mrs. Okamoto and their three children also had dinner with the group. Rev. Okamoto formerly was the resident minister at Waipahu and he had brought a group of Dharma School students and their parents to visit West Kauai for the weekend several years ago. On the last day, the group visited Tokyo Skytree, Asakusa, took a Sumida River cruise and ended their stay in Tokyo with a visit to the Imperial Palace Park. What a spectacular sight! The group departed Haneda Airport and returned on July 22 nd. YBICSE 2017 was truly a wonderful adventure in Jodo Shinshu Buddhist education, early morning services, walking, climbing stairs, Japanese cultural experiences and food, sightseeing, making new friends from BCA, Canada and Brazil and many, many more things. 6 Oahu Hongwanji Council Joint Ohigan Service Sunday, September 17, 2017, 9:00 am Mililani Hongwanji Guest Speaker: Rick Stambul EXCERPTS FROM COMMENTS SHARED AT THE HAWAII KYODAN 2017 GISEIKAI Rick Stambul, President-Elect Buddhist Churches of America Your members live the Nembutsu by their actions. A friend of mine in the dharma, Rev. Harry Bridge, shares an old African saying that reminds me of the attitude of your members: If you want to go fast, go alone; If you want to go far, go together. We share much in common as fellow travelers of Shin Buddhism. I have come to appreciate that what is more important than even the health of our institutions is to ensure that our Teachings are nourished and survive for our children, grandchildren, and for future generations. Each of us brings our own life experiences, and our own personal beliefs about Jodo Shinshu to our everyday lives. For me, Jodo Shinshu is not only about the 4 Noble Truths... the ending of suffering, stress, or craving. Shin is also about compassion. Wisdom becomes compassion. It is about developing our full potential as beings who have art, literature, music, history, etc. as parts of our cultures. Jodo Shinshu is also about love and kindness. From a different context, I would like to talk for a brief moment about the power of love in the face hatred and cruelty. Current political events have forced me to recall harsh and important lessons I learned during my life. Lessons about hatred; and about equality. Forgive me for sharing a bit of my own life-story to illustrate a point. I was politically active as a young man in the civil rights movement in the 1960's. I marched with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King; I worked in Mississippi to register African-Americans to vote, and I learned, for the first time, about hatred. I was beaten and hospitalized by men who spewed hate. My boyhood neighbor, Mickey Schwerner, was killed that summer. Yet I have always separated my politics from my love of and appreciation for Jodo Shinshu. I respect the differing opinions of others and I try to remember that we are all embraced under Amida s wings. However, when some of the core teachings of Jodo Shinshu are under attack, I believe there is a moral imperative to speak out as a Buddhist. The Executive Order signed by our President has been causing serious concerns and suffering for many people, especially Muslims and immigrants. Yet, all of us are immigrants! That is one of the great strength s of our American experiment. In the 1980's I worked as an attorney doing research on the legal team that brought the Coram Nobis Petition to the U.S. Supreme Court seeking redress for the 120,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans who were incarcerated during the War. This was a powerful lesson for me in actively seeking equal treatment for all people regardless of their religion or ethnicity. All people deserve to be respected and treated equally. Shinran taught that the 18 th Vow, and the Pure Land is for everyone, with no exceptions. Jodo Shinshu honors the notions of equality, and equal treatment for every person. How do we relate to and deal with hatred when it is in our midst? What weapons can we use to fight against such hatred? We can use love. We can use Namo Amida Butsu. We can demonstrate our kindness to each other. Because... As Nelson Mandela said so eloquently at the end of his life: I have walked a long walk to freedom. It has been a long road, and it is not over yet. I know that my country was not made to be a land of hatred. No one is born hating another person because of the color of her skin, or the place of their birth. People learn to hate. They can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart. To carpool, meet at the temple at 9:30 a.m., or meet us at Wahiawa Hospital at 10:00 a.m. We invite all kyodan members to join the BWA ladies for a heartwarming time with the residents. Lunch to follow at Dot s Restaurant. Another date to mark on your calendar is November 18, the day of the BWA Seminar and Convention at Mililani Hongwanji. Sign up will take place at the next BWA meeting on September 3rd. Cost: $10 for members; $12 for non-members. Eighteen BWA members and some spouses are looking forward to the 2017 State Lay Convention on September 9 at Aiea Hongwanji. They will hear guest speaker Jay Sakashita and meet His Eminence Monshu Kojun Ohtani. Six BWA members will hear the Gomonshu earlier in the day when he visits Wahiawa Hongwanji. The Toiletries Committee will be distributing the collected toiletries soon, so if you have any toiletries that you want to donate, please bring them in during the first two weeks of September. Looking ahead: December 9 mini-bazaar; 5 p.m. 9 p.m. More info to follow. The joint conference in September 2018 has been moved from Kauai to Oahu and will be held at the Ala Moana Hotel. 8 Welcome to our Dharma School year! We hope you had a great summer and enjoyed the fun and games at our August 27 th Rally Day to celebrate the kick off of the new school year. The day also included a slideshow presentation by our students Xander Babcock and Chloé Oshiro, who shared their Japan summer trip as participants in the Young Buddhist International Cultural Study Exchange (YBICSE) program. We hope you were also able to attend our Bon Dance and view the winning DSTO contest posters from our talented students: Dayton, Mari, Amaya, Sarah, Courtney, Diandra, Danny, Gabriel, Brennan, Maya, Lily, Grant, Chloé, and Xander. Our Dharma School Co-Director Roger Babcock and Claire Doi have another exciting year of lessons and activities planned. Here s what we have planned for our September Dharma sessions: September 10 Welcome Activity September 24 Peace Day Activity Please note that due to our temple s hosting of the Oahu District Joint Ohigan Service on September 17 th, we will not have Dharma class on that day. And if you have not yet signed up to attend our Wet 'n' Wild waterpark on Saturday, September 23, 2017, please sign up on the temple bulletin board by Friday, September 15 th. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for more info. We would love to see all of our students there. And please bring your family and friends to join in on the fun! Hongwanji Kids Letter Attention all young people from Preschool to 5 th grade sign up now to receive a free monthly Hongwanji Kids Letter mailed directly to your home! This project was created by Lahaina Hongwanji Minister Rev. Ai Hironaka and his wife Megumi, who is the letter s primary author. Rev. and Mrs. Hironaka began this project as a way to send kids a letter mailed directly to their home. They noted that with the current popularity of s and social media, they still strongly believe in the power of a hard copy letter. And they shared that their students enjoy getting mail addressed to them, some asking their parents when they check their mailboxes, Is there a letter for me? With the Hongwanji Kids Letter, the goal is to bring Dharma lessons and messages into the home through pictures, games and activities. Additionally, the Hironaka s hope the letter s message will start a conversation with family members and friends. Parents or grandparents can read and share the letter with younger children and have meaningful dialog about the Dharma. If you would like your child or grandchild to receive a Hongwanji Kids Letter, please provide the child s name and mailing address to our Dharma School Co-Director Claire Doi at clairedoi@hawaiiantel.net by September 30 th and she will forward the info to Rev. and Mrs. Hironaka. Then just wait for a delivery from your mail carrier! 8

9 Mahalo! The Country Store was one of the most popular places for the many people that bought goodies. The line at opening time was very long but everyone waited patiently! Claire Doi and Diane Yoza want to thank the many people who donated baked goods such as cherry mochi, trail mixes, banana bread, cookies of all kinds, brownies, lilikoi butter, mango chutney, energy bars and okoshi. There were other goodies such as inarizushi, boiled peanuts, pizzelles and sekihan! Thank you also to those that made scrubbies, pot holders, quilted blankets, purses, hapi coats and dish cloths. We really appreciate all of these donations and the time you spent making them! Thank you to all the ladies who worked a shift. We were very busy at for least the first hour. Mahalo to those that came on Sunday to clean-up! Great news from the Silent Auction Committee: Mahalo again to the generosity of the Kyodan, who enabled us to raise over $2,500 over the two nights at the Bon Dance Silent Auction! Kudos to Lea Uehara, Alice ToguchiMatsuo, Susan, Chloe, & Tyler Oshiro, Sharon & Jillian Freitas, Twila Castelluci, Claire Doi and Charijean Watanabe for gathering, cleaning, storing, pricing, merchandising and collecting the monies, Special thanks to Eric and Jan Yamauchi for their very generous support of happy and healthy plants which continue to support our efforts annually. 10 Golden Chain Grants: Next Application Deadline is October 31 The Golden Chain Grant Program is intended to help you put Dharma into action. Grant applications are reviewed by the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Committee on Social Concerns, which recommends grant awards of up to $1000 for selected projects. Do you have an idea that can make a positive impact in our community? For example, would you like to organize a film screening and discussion but need help with the screening fee? Do you have a plan for a peace garden and need funds to cover materials for raised beds? Use your imagination! Just be sure the project employs an innovative approach to a defined problem or need and has clear, logical, and realistic plans. Any person or group part of the Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii ohana can apply.
