The pupls wrote the lnes themselves, and decded upon the essental and the non-essental materals to be used. The students also decded upon and wrote the synopses whch were read between each scene. The majorty of the placards was made by the chldren. It was ther dea to carry out the Shakespearan dea of stage settng through lack of propertes. They also desgned ther own costumes. The dramatzaton was a decded success, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the entre student body and faculty. Senor Class Holds Impressve Program At Chapel Hour CLASS DAY OCCASION USES KEYNOTE OF SPLENDID DIGNITY The Senor class presded at chapel on Frday, December 7th. The program was one whch combned dgnty and solemnty. The entre Senor class, robed n ther caps and gowns, entered the audtorum after everyone else had gotten to ther places. The processonal was "oy to the World." After the devotonal exercses the honorary members were ntroduced to the audence by Anne Bulloch, the Senor class presdent. The honorary members are, Dr. Henry A. Converse, "bg brother" of the class, ss argaret V. Hoffman, "bg sster," and aster y Dngledne, class mascot. Altogether, the well-planned menu, the general Chrstmas atmosphere, the keen enjoyment of everyone made the dnner a most delghtful affar. FRANCES SALE CLUB PRESENTS PLAYET The Frances Sale Club held ts regular meetng Tuesday nght n Reed Hall. After the usual order of busness, Group I of the new members, wth dred Knsey as charman, gave an nterestng program whch conssted of a clever stunt enttled "Pokey Huntus." Charmng n ts unque plot, ts splendd thought, ts capable characterzaton, the playet was utterly appealng to the audence. The story of the Chrstmas tree that was enchanted brought to mnd the apprecatve dea of Chrstmas. The Chrstmas tree, sent to the wrong address, apparently, worked ts enchanted charm upon a couple devod ' of Chrstmas sprt and cheer, and brought to them the realzaton of the happness and joy of the Chrstmas perod. Chrstne ason and Leonde Harrs, were the wfe and husband who dd not understand Chrstmas. Each played her part capably, and wth a decded show of talent. The lttle mad, Fredrca, played by Katherne Harrs, was extremely well portrayed. The chldren who wth the spell of the Chrstmas tree held a tral and brought to the marred couple the truth of ther prejudce, makng them realze t, were attractvely played. embers of the class playng these parts were Kathryn Pace, who made a delghtfully effcent judge; Salle Kent, as the capable dstrct attorney; Frances Rand, an exactng sergeant-at-arms; and ula Reynolds, Evelyn Wolfe, and Lucy Gllam, as splendd wtnesses. Other members of the class acted as most deal jurors, and the carolers sang n a most appealng manner the Chrstmas carols. "The Enchanted Chrstmas Tree" was a most attractve producton, decdedly worthy of the Senor class. LYCEU COURSE TO HAVE FEATURES OF GREAT IPORTANCE TWO NUBERS OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO BE GIVEN On the Lyceum course two partcular numbers of nterest are to be gven to the student body after the Chrstmas holdays. The entertanment commttee s partcularly fortunate n securng these two attractve features. On anuary the eleventh, Tony Sarg wth hs aronettes wll present two plays. These unusual plays are of greatest nterest to the student body, havng been here several tmes before. Ther unqueness and perfecton s entrely worthy of the unversal admraton accorded them. On the twenty-seventh of anuary E. H. Southern, the well known nterperter of Shakespearean roles wll appear here. ost fortunate s the student body n havng the opportunty to hear the famous actor. j

What a myrad of vsons the magc word, "Chrstmas" brngs to us! There s no other season or holday whch touches so many emotonal sprngs. When the shaft of whte lght entered the tssues of the heart wth the comng of the Chrst Chld, a ran bow of colors came from ths prsm, green, red, gold, purple, blue each representng by ts tme and assocaton some phase of the Yuletde. It s these meanngs as they some to me, that I would gve you that you mght pause a mnute. Frst I see a Golden ray pure gold of love refned and made, more beautful by self-sacrfce. Surely you see, t too. A green lght shnes forth It s not the gree of the grass nor of the soft leaf buds whch symbolze "re-brth," but of the sturdy cedars that stays green through all seasons, steady and clear as a pure flower. As these trees, through wntry months, dsplay ther folage of unchangng hue, so do we n our lves and hearts show forth our unchangng fath n the Dvne Sprt of Chrstmas! But, here's a rosy glow the warmth, the jollty, the launchng remembratnce of ths festval. Watch the faces of the Chrstmas shoppers or the clerks, feel t, revel n ths unversal reacton! And n between the brllance of colors, there s a neutral, sad one gray. It s approprate for the cruelty, the neglect, the want, the sadness, the memores, that some have, ntensfed for them by the sprt whch pervades everywhere. Purple, the mark of royalty s here. The omnpotence of the Chld born n Bethlehem, on a clear cold nght, lohg ago. "Then, as now, everyone, kngs n purple and people lke you and I, bowed down to Hm, and some day, perhaps we shall see Hm n purple robes and wearng a crown. But purple and ermne, or drty rags, royalty of soul wll always show through." And as the ranbow band slowly fades, a pale blue ray seems to come. ue, the memory, other Chrstmases, other people, who laughed and were at peace n the mracle of lfe. Then the thought of these makes thngs return to us wth a suddtm pang, or perhaps, just a dull ache. To them do we owe some of the great beauty of Chrstmas. We stop n the mdst of a rejocng carol for a tny prayer for those who have come nto our lves, stayed for a bref moment and slpped away. Although we catch a glmpse of'each ray at the Chrstmas tde, t's the glorous whte one whch seems the most brllant of all. INDIVIDUALITY One of the bg ndctments of the college student today s that he does not thnk creatvely. College lfe Is frequently accused of wthdrawng ts votares from the current of actve lfe and drownng them n a stagnant academc pool. The classroom becomes a substtute for the world. That keen awareness of lfe, that vvd eagerness to observe and understand and above all the prceless thng whch sets man apart from anmal lfe, ceratve ndvdualty, s all too often smothered by the dry-dust Of college routne. Learnng, dverson and recreaton, all have a place but they should not be permtted to escape ther legtmate bounds and become ends n themselves rather than means to an end. Sherwood Anderson says: "Creatve men are aware of all about them," and t s precsely n ths pont that we are falures. Instead of beng aware of lfe as ndvduals we look questonngly at anythng asde from the beaten path and then fearng the crtcsm of the multtude we slp nto the old rut and conform. If college has any one am t should be to make each student an ndvdual; to make each man and woman thnk objectvely and wth vson. Leaders are not made by determnng ther conduct on tradton and mass approval, rather than real man s he who thnks out hs problems of conduct, the man who s hs own master and who feels a share of responsblty for the mantenance and advancement of our cvlzaton. Let us as college students open our eyes and become aware of the beauty and greatness of the lfe that surrounds us. Too long we have merely exsted dgested facts lke human encyclopedas and lved n the rut. Now s the tme to study our lves, determne rather than merely accept standards, «sume our ndvdual responsblty and creatvely lve. Exchange. BOOKS REVIEWED AND CRITICIZED (K. N. C. Harrs Edtor) "Dusty Answer" Rosamond Lehmann, New York, Henry Holt and Co., Rosamond Lehmann has gven us a portrat of a grl's soul. udth Earle s a very ndvdual grl, ntellgent, eager, and genune, seekng to be true to herself that she mght not then be false to any man. But her thoughts, her emotons, are those felt at tmes by grls n general. udth belonged to upper-class England. She went up to Cambrdge. Her counterpart, the college grl of Amerca, understands and sympathzes wth her. ss Lehmann has put n words the feelngs that the average grl couldn't fnd words to express. udth was a brght, lonely chld. Her only companons were the chldren next door. These chldren were only there at the tmes when they stayed wth ther grandmother. They were all cousns exceptng ulan and Charle, who were brothers, arella, artn and Roddey completed the famly. When udth was eghteen, the cousns came back to the house next door, after an absence of years. arella returned to the home Charle had nherted; Charle's wdow, wth Charle's chld. arella now loved Charle's brother, n her queer, nsenstve manner. ulan, the cync, and yet senstve, sad of her to udth. "She gets on my nerves to a degree! Nothng but ths sweet blank passvty You know I lke people wth spkes atd facets, people who thrust back when I thrust, brllant, quck, gllterng people. And I lke people who are slow and deep and warm; and I thnk you're one of that sort, udy. But what s she? Sometmes I thnk she's watchng me ntently but I don't know where from, and t makes me rrtable. She's got qualty, you know ncredble physcal and moral courage. I thnk that must have been what Charle loved m her. But cold, cold and fat to me." artn was the bg, shy man devoted to Roddy and lovng udth as he always had. He was just artn the boy, grown up. To udth, the woman, he whspered, "Lovely udy; Lovely dark eyes!" And then, pontng out the marches on the estate, he would go on wth, "You know I do love t, I worshp the sol. Funny. Sometmes I absolutely wsh I were dead so that I could be bured n t and have t all over me and nsde me forever and ever. Look at the way those slopes overlap " And Roddy! Oh Roddy. udth's Roddy, of whom even hs devoted artn sad, "He's rather naughty and spoled I thnk, though he's such a good cfap. A bt of a sensaton, hunter perhaps." All of these cousns were loved by udth; n very dfferent ways, they all belonged to her. And they all loved udth, each n a way characterstc of hmself. udth combnes the ntellgent, cyncal outlook wth the dealstc and nave. So eager for lfe, and beng so dsllusoned by t. It s mpossble to tell the theme of ss Lehmann's book. It s too full of mpressons. It places, t expresses mpressons whch are dear, and beautful to us; n other places, we read, our own heart aches. Nothng s so expressve of ths book as the verse from whch the author takes her ttle. "Ah, what a dusty answer gets the soul When hot for certantes n ths our lfe!" 6 Page Sx AONG THE COLLEGE EANTS AND COENTS Katherne Preston Edtor A tug-of-war was held between the sophomores and freshmen of Tulane Unversty the other week. The freshmen were vctorous but t seems that the sophs refused to beleve the valdty of the decson. It looks a lttle as f the sophs were 'fallng back somewhat n that very vrtut whch they seek to nstll nto the frosh namely, good sportsmanshp. Interest n debatng s ncreasng f we can judge by the added space gven to such news n the papers of the outstandng colleges. goes on fast and furous. AS I SEE IT Frances Snyder Edtor DUES ART'DUE Pay days seem to be n order ths week. Perhaps some keen, alert and shrewd treasurer, percevng the amount of out-gong money n the lne of Chrstmas presents, seals and what not, decded that t was hgh tme such an nflux came n ther drecton; accordngly onday, the, classes celebrated a Pay Day. It s rumored that many dues were pad. True, the Sophs, brbed ther members by danty bows of green and whte rbbons. But even then, gnorant, Unnformed and nqustve Debatng! strangers quered of the proud wear- ers of ths nsgna as to what new If ths keeps up we may*well won- j sororty they had been pledged nto, der f before long wc won't be sayng j Such s-fame, also, class Pay'Days! the tongue s mghter than the football n arousng enthusasm, we mean, though we do have one or two doubts as to ths. We read a good deal nowadays about how college students should be allowed to express ther ndvdualty. Rather a vague term. ust now we happened on an tem whch stated t'lat Columba Unversty was the largest n the Unted States wth an enrollment of 35,000 students. Wouldn't t be rather a dangerous experment f Columba allowed each of her students to "express ther ndvdualty" somethng n the nature of an exploson would take place, we fear. The senor grls at Gulford Col-1 lege, N. C. walked off wth the nterclass hockey champonshp, at the college so we read. Good work Ths mght be appled n connecton wth our own recent hockey Tournament when our senors made off wth the champonshp also, the other day. How about t, senors? A regular crcus wth elephants, clowns and peanuts was presented by the student organzatons at Tulane Unversty not long ago. Ths s a rather novel dea and seems to us as f t mght go over rather bg especally snce we have heard a good deal of talk on the campus about the sameness of stunts. It s well assured at Newcomb College that the freshmen wll know ther handbook and know t thoroughly snce the presdent of the student councl there recently announced that those who flunked the handbook exam would be requred to copy the whole handbook. Certanly elmnate the possblty -of any freshman pleadng gnorance.of the law. Harvard has receved a gft of $3,000,000, whch she wll not use to enlarge the college as s usual but wll use t n makng a smaller college that s she s plannng to total, smaller unts wthn the Unversty for specalzed work. It's a great thng to realze the mportance of growth but s also a very fne thng to know when to start mprovng the varety. (Contnued from Page 1, Column S.) ham emoral Hosptal, s back wth us agan. After the lghts were turned on and everyone settled down to a w more prosac drfner, barks, whstles, boomng of drums, rattle of toy wagons and the z-z-z of tops could be heard from all drectons never before ths year has 'ngle Bells' been sung wth so much roarng enthusasm. Borah, n the December ssue of College Humor. "College folk looked down on the whole busness wth dsdan. They wouldn't gve t a mnute's consderaton. But the atttude of the college student s changng today; he recognzes poltcs as a real force n the country. If the students who really feel an actve nterest n government wll consder poltcs as a career and enroll n the courses ntended to prepare them for t, the Unted States wll be able to mx n world poltcs wthout fear. It wll no longer be the tenderfoot sttng n the other fellow's game. "The student who would go n for poltcs needs to obtan frst a thorough cultural educaton. At the same tme he must learn law to put hs knowledge to work, how to get out of the academc rut and talk the language of the electorate. A charman wth a full completement of campagn trcks can beat the most brllant theorst n the world f the theorst does not know how to put hs stuff over. "The trouble wth most Amercan college ' students today s that they know nothng about publc affars. In an examnaton n current events n a certan unversty, one student dentfed George Washngton Englsh as a famous negro educator. Another thought axfeld Parrsh was the headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan. Wth that sort of knowldege, how can college students expect to do anythng at poltcs? Fortunately not all students are lke that. "Poltcs s not a crowded professon.
