Senator Kenned/ 2nd Governor Rockefeller. I have no preference lor vcepresdental canddates except that tle Republcan nomnee soud be a Catholc and ('" Democratc, a vrotestant. Tns set of canddates would throw the great Amercan publc nto a quandry. Both presdent ml canddates would lavc personal appeal, Character, and smlar background. Nether las made poltcal errors or enemes on any grand scale. The J *CH vce-presdental canddates would serve to J _c#*^v less: n the mport of the relgous ssue, the successor to Rockefeller would be a Catholc whle the successor to Kennedy would be a protcstant. II man an unlkely slate of canddates were presented, what would be the resulf There s a segment of voters who do not p., vote exclusvely by party. Unable to vote by party or per* sonalty. ths segment would have to become famlar wth the ssues or. n all honesty, stay away from the polls. Martha Gray Shrley Junor Feelng my way wth the greatest Insecurty, I shall. nevertheless, proceed to support Senator Kennedy at a lkely prospect for the Democratc presdental nomnee. In full sympathy wth prevalng ant-catholc sentments towards Kennedy. I stll feel that ths emnent statesman has proved hmself capable and worthy of such a demandng poston as Presdent 0/ the Unted States. Accordng to my thnkng, a ready mnd and an even temperament should be the foremost characterstcs n consderng a canddate able to cope wth the pursung world err Throughout recent campagns Kennedy has dsplayed hs nnumerable po- tcntals. Hs admrable conduct has been above queston when attacked by hs opponents. He has dsplayed hs ncreasng nterest n the welfare of the naton as a who He has exhbted hs magnetc ablty to cope wth people no matter what the prevalng crcumstances. Thus. I should lke to suggest Kennedy as a lkely presdental nomnee. Gaynor Vanlandnf ham Sophomore Votng for the U. S. Presdent has become a hard task for conscentous ctzens. The voter should know what hs canddate really stands for before he casts hs ballet, but now ths seems to be out of the queston. The canddates at the moment are nterested only n gettng votes, thus, they are prone to make rash promses to the publc. Be aware of ths "If I'm elected. BJ / promse'' phrase, because one man can da just so much, especally when he s ndebted to hs party and has to follow party rules. If the voter happens to be a party member, the problem of votng s unfortunately answered for hm. The ntellgent I ctzen, however, wll weght the mportance of relgon, experence, and capablty Vanlandlnchaa n the comng electon. He wll have a good reason for votng for hs canddate, and more than lkely t wll not be just to keep someone else out of offce. Nancy Huffakr Freshman // / could vote. Senator John F. Kennedy would be my choce for presdent. My vote for Kennedy would not be because of the southern Democratc tradton, but because he has, I thnk, the qualfcatons of a good presdent. The 1980 presdental race s sure to be one of the most nterestng n years because relgon wll be an mportant ssue. Many Amercans are afrad of a Catholc presdent, and ths electon wll reveal to us just how much relgon controls the lves of our people. I feel a man should be judged by M actons, and hs fath s hs own prvate usness. If Kennedy says that he s "com- ; elely free from any ccclcsast al pressure or oblgatons n fulfllng hs oath of offce," hs word ts good enough for me. Ntn I beleve Senator Kennedy to be! man for presdent because he has a way wth the publc. Hs personalty has a certan electrut/ uboul t that can wn and hold the admraton of many followers. To me, Kennedy holds true the Amercan way. I could not ask for a better nomnee. Democrat or Republcan, or for a better Presdent of the Unted States. Dr. Robert Hggnbotham Faculty Unfortunately for the Demoerats. all ther presdental contenders have sgnfcant labltes Stevenson's two earler defeats. Humphrey's advanced lberalsm, Johnsons Southern connecton, Symngton's lack of a publc mage, and Kennedy's Catholcsm. Poltcal reasons as well as the country's best nterests. I thnk, make Stevenson the party's most promsng nomnee. A moderate, he stands a good Chanat of attractng Southern support, and hs selecton mght well prevent u Democratc revolt n Dxe. Moreover, Stevenson by nature s conclatory and has the temperament and desre to weld U - aether the dscordant elements utthn hs partu alter what promses to be n lght 0/ the Wsconsn prmary and the antcs.»-» t n..... *** " stfnwongs of Paul Butler one of the btterest Democratc presdental contests n many years.
