A crcus queen wll be crowned as usual. At class meetngs Tuesday nght one grl was nomnated from each class. These grls wll be voted on soon by the entre student body, but the result wll not be revealed untl the queen s crowned the nght of the crcus. Each vote wll cost a penny. C. swmmers! Noted Entertaner To Perform Frday To Sng and Drama tze Va. Folklore and Ballads Mss Alfreda Peel wll present her program of ballads and folklore Frday nght. October 12, at 7:30 o'clock n the Lttle Audtorum. The program wll be dvded Into three groups. The frst group wll nclude Mss Peel's personal account of the collectng of ballads n Vrgna. She has collaborated wth Dr. Arthur Kyle Davs who compled the book of Vrgna folklore and ballads, and has made extensve tours n many parts of the state n connecton wth ths work. The second dvson wll nclude the sngng of ballads that have been found n our natve state. Mss Peel's rendton of the ballads dscovered n the mountans s sad to be excellent because of the fact that her ablty as an actress and a dramatst has allowed her to enter nto the very sprt of the mountaneers and to reproduce the melodes as she heard them. The last group n the program wll Include sketches of folklore and wtchcraft n Vrgna. Mss Peel has found many nterestng facts about these two phases of folk tradton and s ready to prove that wtchcraft has not been solely confned to Salem M husetts. Vocabulary am Sueeau That a good \ocabulary s a strong Indcaton of success s true, expermenters dl clare, Recently Dr. Johnson O'Connor (drector of Human Engneerng Laboratores at Stev Insttute of Technology and assstant professor of Industral Research at Ma achusetts Insttute of Technology) gave a vocabulary test of one hundred-ffty words to hgh school freshmen, college freshm n, college graduates, and major executves. Of these groups the major executve cored hghest, seven errors beng the Whj do the major executves have the best vocabulares? An unlmted vocabulary may not be a requrement of success, nor docs success always go wth a broad vocabulary, but certanly one's vocabulary Is a good Indcaton of one's present and future level n hs vocaton. Therefore, f your vocabulary s defcent, t behooves you to read more wdely and to make better use of the dctonary. "/ Don't Lke Ladles' Lades, f we are ever n danger of becomng too satsfed wth ourselves we should read w hat Joan Alayburn says n the August ssue of Scrbner's, In ths artcle, "1 Don't Lke Lades," reasons are not based entrely on facts. They are, however, forceful BO forceful, n fact, that they wll not only wage us up but set us to thnkng. We who lke to thnk of ourselves as lades resent such Statements as these: "Lades are cruel and secure"; "they are snobs beyond a doubt"; 'they can not tell the precse truth": and then ths, the fnal nsult, "The lades' edges are fuzzy and her straght lnes blurred." The person whom we label "conceted" has developed ths valuable part of hs make-up Into somethng obnoxous, somethng tha detracts from a mght-be charmng personalty, Ths s the form of Concet that causes us to say. "I hate conceted people." What s l that makes some persons leaders, outstandng and valuable? Confdence, bul Isn't confdence just another form of concet? Of course, energy and perseverance are essental but one must have Confdence In hmself and hs ablty before he s able to bad other persons. These are people that captalze then- concet and combne t wth good qualtes to make themselves personaltes. We do not call ths type of person conceted but on the other hand, we admre and respect ther achevements. Fnally, we do not hate all conceted people because all of us are that way. C. does not become a full-fledged college ctzen untl she has taken the standard examnaton on the handbook and sgned the honor code n the presence of an offcer of the student government.
