Unless however we are deceved by the numercal response to one of these campagns for ballot castng tle general nterest n questons somewhat removed from the scope of campus lfe s not keen Two years ago the regular Monday mornng current events talks were dscontnued because of the slght attendance that ndcated a lack of nterest among the students. n spte of the fa t that week-ends spent away from Wellesley seem to be the m^ost popular extra-currcular actvty we would welcome more postve evdence of horzons broadened by excursons. actual or mental nto the world where problems are dealt wth practcally nstead of theoretcally. Occasonally we take tme to realze that we are members of that group known as "the prvleged classes." Less often probably are we conscous of the poltcal and socal gestures made by would-be leaders t s up to us now at least to know our own mnds as to the actual sgnfcance of newspaper headlnes. The educated classes are usually rega-ded as the stablzng element n a naton; n order to take places n our varous communtes after college we should be able to ratonalze our vews. "College a mere preparaton" s a phrase so famlar as to have become well-^ngh meanngless. The fact of ts truth however cannot always be dsregarded. f t s to be a successful preparaton college lfe should nclude as an ntegral part of t some acquantance wth contemporary hsto? and current trends of thought as well as the knowledge of medaeval nsttutons that s the result of attendance at a long seres of requred lectures. One student who emerged unsuccessfully n an encounter wth a tree has been hmpng around campus ths week as a lvng example of the treachery of a dmlylghted path along the lake. Many of the rest of us have stumbled over rocks cobblestones and tree trunks and escaped wth the loss of a happy dsposton or a par of stockngs f nothng more drastc. Would t be possble for a lght to be placed n the Court of Tower as t s approached from the lbrary or somewhere n the proxmty of the extremely desolate roadway between Alumnae Hall and Shakespeare? FRESHMAN TURNS NDEPENDENT To the Wellesley College News: We want to reply to our ssters of 36 who last week rased a cry for Bg Ssters. We can hear the upperclassmen murmurng are all the freshmen ths year so demandng and so nearsghted? They are not. We thoroughly sympathze wth the abolshment of ths old custom. Dd our classmates n the Vll stop to realze the pressure that s put upon the sophomores who cannot be forever provdng corsages and dnners at Sellers for ther over-expectant charges? And despte the fact that ths s no longer requred of them many sophomores have taken a "more personal nterest" n us. We werent asked to the Barn Recepton untl Saturday afternoon but that ddnt prevent us from havng a marvelous tme. All the upperclassmen dd ther best to see that each freshman was personally escorted that nght. We have a feelng that those who wander around "hopng that they wll nterest some upperclass grl who take pty on them" wll never be treated "as f they really belonged n ths nsttuton" unless they forget ther dscontent and settle down wth a "partcular crcle of frends" of ther own. "Heaven helps those who help themselves" and the sophomores wll be our frends f we ust remember that ones own class comes frst. n our case as well as n thers. LTTLE SSTERS WANTED To the Wellesley College News: So 36 wants Bg Ssters! Here s a member of 34 who wants Lttle Ssters. thnk the new system of Campus Suppers much better than the recepton because now t s possble to meet a few people and become acquanted wth them whereas before we met so many people we dd not get acquanted wth anyone. The Englsh Poetry Collecton n the Treasure Room of the Lbrary contans an nterestng copy of Scotts frst publcaton. n 1796 Scott heard of the verson of Brgers Leore by Wllam Taylor of Norwch and he was stmulated to attempt a rval translaton. He publshed hs translaton n October of that year Of the one-tme hot dscusson under the ttle Wllam and Helen As to- to whether yes or whether no The Senor car could stay; gether wth The Chase (The Wld Huntsman). Bound n at the back of ths volume s another translaton of Lenore made by Henry James Pye publshed n the same year. Pye became Poet Laureate n 1790 and held the ofqce for twenty-three years. He was sad to be emnently respectable n everythng but hs poetry. Scott called hm the "Poetcal Pye." An orgnal autograph letter from Pye to Edward Malone accompanes ths volume. n ths letter Pye makes an "observaton" concernng a statement as to the appontment of the Poet Laureate whch appeared n Malones Dryden. Ths s answered by a note n Malones handwrtng at the bottom of ths letter. Ths volume s bound n dark blue morocco wth the coat of arms of Mr. Hamlton Bruce embossed n gold on both covers. The frst two volumes of Border Mnstrelsy were prnted by Ballantyne n As a prnter Ballantyne had genune gfts. n ths year he set up a press n the precncts of Holyrood House. t was called the Border Press and hs prntng ganed a reputaton for beauty and accuracy. Scott arranged that all hs works should be publshed by Ballantyne. Evdence n regard to the fnancal dffcultes of ths establshment s furnshed by a promssory note nserted n volume one of the Mnstrelsy of the Scottsh Border. Ths s a promse on the part of Ballantyne to pay Scott 850 wthn nne months and s sgned by Scott and Ballantyne. n 1806 Scott publshed a collecton enttled Ballads and Lyrcal Ballads. Wth the Teasure Room copy of the frst edton of Marmon there s an orgnal autograph letter from Scott. The frst edton of the Lady of the Lake whch s dsplayed n ths exhbton formerly belonged to Marqus Cornwalls and has hs bookplate. On the appearance of the frst two volumes of the Mstrelsy of the Scottsl Border Anna Seward "The Swan of Ltchfeld" w-ote to Scott warmly commendng t. At her death n 1809 she bequeathed her lterary works to hm and at her request he edted her posthumous compostons. n 1810 he publshed her poetcal works n three volumes prefxng a memor by hmself. Ths exhbton contans a letter from Scott dated October concernng ths publcaton. There are also two volumes by Anna Seward. One s Lousa a Poetcal Novel prnted n 1784; the other s a Monody on Maor Andre publshed n Ltchfeld n 1781 nserted on the flyleaf of los volume from our Treasure Room s an orgnal njnuscrpt wh":h Mss Seward had nclosed n a letter to an ntmate frend. At the top of t she had wrtten: "A lttle muscal medcne for love-sck melancholy." The frst edtons and autographs whch have been selected for ths exhbton are from The Englsh Poetry Collecton of Early and Rare Edtons presented by Professor George Herbert Palmer n memory of Alce Freeman Palmer.
