Seruon Delvered on 7."th Annversary of Foundng the Amercan Msson. Who the Workers Were am When They Came A Oranl nhertance. On last Sunday evenog was celebrated the seventyfft h annversary of the establshment of the Amercan Msson n Hawa. At Central Unon church the day was j commemorated at the evenng ser? m v; " r!';m'"'"! lllttl ' ; REV. SERENO E BSHOP. vce by a sermon by Rev. S. E Bshop, whose father was one of the actve laborers n the early days Mr. Bshop spoke as follows saah 0f. "The abundance of the sea shall be turned unto thee; the wealth of the natons shall coneunto thee. Bv reason of our unque central and str..;e'!c poston n he North Pacfc Ocean, we of Hawa have ample reason to apply ths promse to our country. Ths s destned to be a great commercal resort, nto whch the abundance of the fast multplyng traffc of ths great ocean must soon pour; and to whch the wealth of the great sanoandng natons must Coordn ate copously 'mnster. wth these benefts, stands before our churches and people the hyh uty, the lofty offce and prvlege, of mnsterng n return to th s ocean commerce and to these vstng peones the most elevatng and healng nfluences that our best developed Chrstanty can supply. t has grown to be clear that these Hawaan slands have been so pecularly located here, and so remarkably evangelzed, for the ureat purpose of becomng a center of llu.. natng and healthgvn g forces to tl vast commerce now developng. t was seventyfv e years ago, on March 3, 820, that the poneer mssonary, Bngham, Thurston, Whtney and Ruggles, wth ther assocates, heard from the shore of Kohala that, 4 Kamehameha s dead! The tabus are abol shed tte dols destroyed the heau s are burned!" God had wonderfully cleared away the most formdable obstructons to the gospel. well remember th four mssonares named and ther wves, twelve years later, when they had already gven the New Testament to the people. Only a few anl very aged survvors among the natves can remember ther arrval. Just a month ago. on Pauoa road, there deceased an aged and most santly man, the Rev. Only ten of those had been more than ten years on the grjund. Descendants of forty mssonary famles are now lvn. n these slands, numberng about SO of each Fex, more than two thrds o them of th" thrd and fourth generaton. ts t n S0 was completed the stone church n the slands, that of Wanee n Lahana. The stone church at Kalua was fnshed n k;7, that of Kawaahao n Honolulu n 84 '. A very large and substantal adobe church was fnshed at '. a n lsotl. and a smlar one at Kaumakap l n 838. S j! d church buldngs rapdly followed n all the prncpal dstrcts ; also well bult school booses. A g eat mpulse was gven to educaton by the establshment n ssl of the excellent hgh school at Lahanaluna, from whch traned teachers were soon dstrbuted throughout the lands. By the press and bndery under the care of Messrs. Hall and Dmond as well as a press at Lahanaluna, Scrptures and school books were greatly multpled ffty and sxty years ago. Tte entre Bble was completed n lso!, carefully translated anl revsed by the laborous cooperaton chefly of the older mssonares, who were the most sklled n the vernacular, Fburstoo, Bngham, Bcharl8 and Bshop. Both at Kalua and at Ka my father spent many hours day bendng over hs translatons from the orgnal lreek and Hebrew. Weekly nstalments of proof sheets and of copy for revson traversed the Ewa road between hm and Mr. Bngham n Honolulu. Tns was added to frequent teachng n school, preachng n ut dstrcts, constant medcal work and pastoral duty. The most norable event of the mssonary experence was the mghty revval n Durng the prev OttS years less than 2000 converts had been baptzed and admtted to the church. More than 9,000 were admtted n the next three years A tremendous sprtual force descended upon all the people of the slands They came out en masse to daly preachng servces. hey were ovecome wth weepng and prayng; Then a boy of eleven, remember the deep mpresson made by a stran e, supernatural power wth whch the mssonares seemed at that tme to speak. saw 6000 halfclothe d people of Bars and Waanae on one Sabbath seated on the ground under a ma where the Kwa church now stands upon the hll, whle m father admnstered baptsm to four hundred men and women, callng then each by name, a servce occupyng two hours. He affused the water from a sponge. Rev. t tus Coan baptsed 500 converts n one day, employng a brush, alter the manner ot baptsm by the Jews n Chrst's day who sprnkled wth a bunch ot hyssop n token of cleansng. Although tte great revval left twothr ds of the natve people n 8tstll one hanged n heart by the gospel nevertheless the whole naton had receved a mghty sprtual uplft. t had become essent.a v a Chrstan naton. t was prepared to enter upon the noble perod ot progres n cvlzaton, n consttutonal lberty, and n representatve government whch followed. left my father's house at the end of 839. Lor more than forty years snce then, poltcal, socal and commercal progrej s have contnued Long s.ee has been m re than realsed n bawa tne hope expressed n the nstructons gven n 80 to the poneer mssonares "You are to am at nothng short of coverng thee e slands wth frutful felds and pleasant dwellngs and schools and churches." To us, here assembled, who largely represent the lneal and sprtual progeny of tte mssonary fathers, has descended the goodly hertage of homes and occupatons n ths now cvlsed and beautt ol land, wth ts precous opportuntes of culture and growth n ad good thngs. Tne true chldren and hers of those venerated fathers are by no means only decendathose lnea! who follow 'hem n character and purpose. All you are such chldren who ma those men your fathers by adoptng the grand ams, and applyng yourselves to fulfl the work whch they began. What was the pre lomnant end held n vew by those mssonary fathers? used to attend when a boy, wth deep est nterest, the daly sessons of th'r annual meetngs, wuch were held n yonder d school hou beyond the ston church know what thought predomnated n the daly jrajersarn speech of my father and hs mssonary brothers, and whch seemed to tll them Wth a constant enthusasm. should detne that thought as the supreme das re to have the Kngdom of God establshed n the hearts and lves of the pfjop'e of Hawa, as well as of the whole world. t was the thought of the tr.t petton of our Master's great praye,4thy Kngdom Come' Our fathers came here to Pet up the kngdom of God n Hawa. t was a kngdom of healng and blessng whch would redeem sad save those n no eame under ts obedence, hot h for an eternal lfe of glory, and for eocal h. alth, lberty and prosperty n the present lfe. he glorous MartyrKn g of ths dvne kngdom, buyng lost snners wth Hs blood, would llt them w th H.v to beavea and he would also lft them out Of slavery to tyrant chefs and to sor cerers, and make them opulent free men on earth. Ths mlenal rsoa of earthly as well as heaven y redemp n. was much n the th tght Of the nun who planted tha kngdom of God n Hawa. t has already been largely realsed, f sre compare the present socal condton of Honolulu wth that of seventylvyears ago. e Our Lord and Kng has rchly blessed the work done n Hs name, and las not faled n hs prom ses Approachng the gate of the twenteth century, and Buterng the fourth quar ter century of Chrstanty n Hawa, we fnd ourselves n the mdst of a tme of socal and poltcal transton, ard of what clearly promses to be an mmense commercal expanson. We fnd gfowb op to our bands an effcent orgaana lon of evangelstc and educatonal work whch makes rapd growth and s of the greatest promse. ' pun the relgous and moral foundatons ol ths Chrstan socety so prosperously lad by the mssonary fathers, contnues to rse a noble superstructure. Through Hs Chrstan people n Hawa of many natonaltes, God has bee" grandly forwardng Hswork, and sstll nrgnj t on. We of t day's generaton have ncceedcd to the glorous nhertance of ths prosperous and pushng busness of the kngdom Ol God n Hawa. To our hands. Chrstan brothers and ssters, as the hers of the fathers, s mosl honorably entrusted the forwardng of ths busness, and the buldng up here n greater strength and beauty of God's kngdom of rghteousness and salve on. Ths s our lofty hertage, not of repose or nsurous ndulgence. To us s vouchsafed the gft of an llustrous career of sr.ccesf ul warare upon Satan's realm of SSenefrS, darkness and foul crme. fa us h s descended the exalted behest of establshng n the center of the Pacfc the regn of rghteousness, lght and Heavenward growth. Ths hertage, ths career, ths exaltaton bel ns r. every one n Hawa who now enlstng for Chrst's kngdom and work, thus becomes an her and SUO0 t of the mssonary fathers. That was a grand nvestment Whch God began t'. make n th B Hawaan slands seventylv e years ago. and n whose success He "wll not fal nor he dscouraged. " Of farreach ng how great and t was, those fathers through w hom He began the work, could have lttle precson. They could not dscern the future now openng to our snht. They dd not antcpate the growth of two great Englsh natons on the opposng North amercan and Australasan coasts, to be closely connected bv steam shp and cable lnes OSUtengal Honolulu. They dd not foresee how Hawa would be brought nto ntmacy wth the brght, and versatle people of span suddenly reachng after the gfts of Chrst, am wth the strong and gant naton of Chna rudely awakened from torpdty to feel after whal Chrstanty can bestow of knowledge and power. These lathers dd not antcpate howsoo n after they were g.ne three ffths of our populaton would consst of new m mgrants mor ol of Chrst, or bestng Of hm only n a dm v. ay, and that the noble duty of enlghtenng those strangers would be lad upon the cborches whch they were foundng. God alone knows the end from the begnnng. We ber to see the unfoldng of some of Hs plans. We seem to eethat " s wonderfully bult up ths Hawaan Chrstanty n mdoce an ths group, n order that t mght her,me ; grand center of Chrstan hosptalty and heer to the marn thousands of wayfarers of all raees who wll annually call at our ports t lusms plan! v to have he. ) for the sake ol the future thus openng before us that God planted betmes Hs kngdom n Hawa, protected and bult t up rdo so much of Orec tll beauty. Vcr one th ng s least ll was, namely, that the ft growng nrmrneros of the Pacfc, so soon to attan ehormoos proportons, should fnd God's rght tons and pure kngdom strong!' at ts great coalng and cable center, whch hould not be all gven up to the evl thngs of Satan. God feems to have w led that the seamen, the traders, the toursts, tre po Joorners whom that mghty commerce shall brng to these slands, h all fnd here no wretched Hatao's dee of lotteres, drunkenneas and lust, but a sweet communty of Chrstan homes and schools am churche haven where they shall meet lnht and healng, not darkness and masm ; sprtual cheer am succor, not the poson and foulness of Satan. Stll another dvne purpose unfoldng, Seems to be that Hawaan Chrsta ty, by ts actvty an l frutfulnese, should act as an effectve object lesson to the Japanese and the Chnes who j urn here, teachng them what wholesome fru's Chrstanty produces n socal order, pub c and rec tude jntc e, of character. t s here that the people of Japan and Chna frst encounter Chrstan nsttutons as they t eastward And e n DO Other pa t of Chrstendom do they meet s mor hosptable ar.d frendly recpr on no are tbey lkely anywhere else to gan more favorabls mpressons of Chrst anty. tnd her n the,, of a frendly and actve Chrstanty are ther mnds found to be p cuharlyrec ptve to the

We are most favorably placed for these people comng out of the gnorance and tyranny under whch Komansm has kept them, to apprecate the lght and lberty and wealth whch attends Protestant Chrstanty. The Gospel work for these three promnent natonaltes among us has been dvnely placed n our hands. t forms a meet "essental part of the work of makng ths a strongly Chrstan naton, as t needs to be n ths central p nt of the Pacfc. t s farther mportant for ts reactve power towards the Chrstan enlghtenment of Portugal, Chna and Japan. Ths great work s lad upon us as a chef part of our home msson work. t has been nobly pushed forward. t ;s constantly growng more heavy and argent n rts demands, bv reason of ts success and prosperty. Many devoted Chrstan men and women are gvng ther strength to the Gospel and educatonal work conducted lor these three natonaltes. Much money has been expended, and as the work grows yet larger sums are called for. But t s not doubted that your gfts wll contnue to meet those demands. There was never a dvne call for personal and nancal help more clear and strong than that whch of late years has come to our Chrstan people to mpart the Gospel n all ts lght and power to these three natonaltes. t s a joy no testfy that ths call has not been n van But our funds are much behnd demands, and the work keeps growng. Read our secretary's and treasurer's reports whch wll soon be publshed. You must answer the call stll more generously and devoted.y. Our broth Damon keeps enlargng and extendng the varous branches of work for the Chnese under hs care, and ther fruts are abundant, but more money s sorely needed. Our brothers Gulck and Okabe fnd multplyng openngs for reachng the Japanese wth the word of Chrst, and more workers from Japan must be sent for and supported. The hearts of the planter employers have been much opened to help n ths work. Agan here n Honolulu our brother Soares fnds hs schools and hs Portuguese congregaton so ncreasng that hs place has become altogether too strat for hm. He s n urgent need of a new and spacous church. Much monev am! much personal labor s pressng asked of us, brethren. But what a glorous thng ths s, to knowtha t our Lord and Master hath great need of us to know that He has apponted us of these churches o Hawa, and especally of ths chef and central church, to be the admnstrators and conductors of the noble nvestment of Chrstan cvlzaton whch God has for seventyf ve years been so wonderfully preparng n ths coun try. Halt" a century hence, shall not our chldren and euccesor s look back upon us as havng been worthy successors of the Mssonary Fathers, n that we alpo zealously and manfully wrought to buld apon the foundatons whch they lad? Let our sons then say of us that we also were fathful and unselfsh workers for the kngdom of God n Hawa, and spared nether strength nor money nor prayers to make that kngdom beautful and stong. May the blessed Lord of the kngdom endow all Hs people here most rchly wth Hs holv sprt, and fll them wth great joy n "Hs work of makng ths lovely land a salvaton and a prase. 3 PUBLC HEALTH SOLONS MEET, Dr. Armtage Makes Specfc Denal of Charges Aganst Hm. Only One Case of Srlt? Ksu lts n Hllo of Natves Lan 4W Routne Matter Transacted Routne matters consumed the tme of yesterday's ses.on of the Board of Health. Wth Presdent Smth there were present Drs. Wood, Day, Emerson, Howard and Myers, Member Lansng and Health Agent Reynolds. Reports of Dr. Monsarrat up to June 2th, relatng to slaughter of anmals and under the Act to Mtgate, were read and fled. Health Agent Reynolds reported that he had made an agreement wth George Treadway as superntendent of the Kalh Expermental Staton at a monthly stpend of $90, and $20 addtonal for hs son, who would perform necessary work among healthy persons and attend to messenger dutes. Under ths agreement Treadway has sole charge of the staton, whch would prove more economcal than formerly. Acton approved. Letters reportng matters at the "leper settlement were read and acted upon. One of the communcatons stated that E. M. Van Ll, a leper, would arrve from San Francsco durng the frst part of July. Dr. Frederck K. Lewers, of Kansas Cty, Mo., wrote askng for a poston under the Board. Dr. Lewers was born n the slands and s sad to be a successful practtoner. Hs father was Chrstopher Lewers, who was among the early founders of successful mercantle busness. The recommendatons of Dr. Lewers were of the hghest character. Presdent Smth sad kamaanas should be gven preference n fllng vacances. There beng no vacancy, Dr. Lewers' applcaton was placed on fle. A communcaton wthout punctuaton marks was read from Albert Sala, Napoopoo, Hawa, callng attenton of the Board to the ndscrmnate use of awa by the natves and the results of such practce. Secretary Wlcox was nstructed to obtan co3t of prntng n pamphlet form full proceedngs of the late Medcal Congress, ncludng papers read by Drs. Russell and Armtage, and report same to Medcal Commttee. Dr. Wllams reported only one mld case of scarlatna n Hlo, three patents beng dscharged, wth no further danger of dsease spreadng. Blanks for recordng brths and deaths, prepared by Dr. Yraty, were turned over to the Santary Commttee. The Board consdered such statstcs very mportant, and wll adopt measures to carry out complete complaton. Tenders wll be asked for furnshng supples to the Board of Health and leper settlement for sx months from July st. The executve offcer was nstructed to send twentytw lepers o to the settlement as soon as arrangements could be made. At hs request permts wll be ssued to C. A. Brown and Deputy Sherff Kauh to accompany the expedton. Both of these gentlemen had rendered valuable assstance n locatng and capturng lepers, due acknowledgment beng made by Presdent Smth and members of the Board. A lengthy communcaton was read from Dr. Edward Armtage, replyng to charges made aganst hm as Government physcan n Waluku dstrct by a large num ber of natve pettoners, l ne uocto r made specfc denal of the charges, clamng that personal enmty of a certan plantaton manager was responsble for the ungrounded and malcous attack upon hm and through hm the Government he represented. Presdent Smth sad that whle n Waluku a short tme ago he had dscussed the matter wth several of the pettoners, and nformed them tnt the charges aganst Dr. Armtage must be made more specfc. Untl the?e were receved the matter would be held n abey (X C 6 Matthew Noall, presdent of the Church of Jesus Chrst of Latter Day Sants n the Hawaan slands, requested that two elders of the church be allowed to vst the settlement twce annually ; also that hmself, wfe and Elder Jensen, of Salt Lake Cty, Utah, be Molok a granted permsson to go to durng frst part of July m the nterest of church members of that fath. The latter request was granted. At 4 30 the Board went nto executve sesson. SALORS GO SALNG. They Start on a Long Voyage to Escape Work. The masters of the three deepwat er vessels now n port are havng an nterestng tme wth ther crews. Captan Small, of the shp Manuel Llaguno, ha3 lost several men ; Captan Mahaney, of the Helen Brewer, would lke to lay hs hands on three men who ran off yesterday mornng, and everythng s not gong swmmngly wth Captan Curts, of the Tlle E. Starbuc k. All three vessels are takng on sugar for the Atlantc board, whch means a long voyage around the Horn. The salors evdently do not wsh to make the trp, or at least three of them do not. Ther names are John Sullvan, John Montgomery and Paul Bollel. They belong to the Starbuck, and are heroes of a sensatonal attempt to escape from duty. They were not successful, and are now locked up, awatng the departure of ther shp. The three men left the shp on Thursday nght, and after securng some provsons, vsted the moorngpla ce for yachts and selected the Bonne Dundee a3 the one best suted for ther purpose. t dd not take long to set sal, and off they started on a long voyage. On the way out the channel they ran between two buoy3 and soon found themselves hgh and dry on the reef. An unsuccessful attempt was made to shove the boat off, so they fnally decded to turn n and trust to luck. The yacht was seen early yesterday mornng, shortly afterward boarded and the men placed under arrest. Yrth the excepton of a torn mansal, the lttle yacht was not damaged to any great extent. Captan Scott and two assstants arrested the three salors who attempted to steal the yacht Bonne Dundee. One of the number refused to jon the ether darng navgators, and when the yacht ran on the reef he returned to town and nformed the authortes of what had taken place. When Captan Scott reached the Bonne Dundee about 5 o'clock Frday mornng he found the two salors packed away n the yacht, hopng, as they expressed t, to make t appear that no one was on board. The men are beng held for nvestgaton. To Contractors. 6 HOW THEY SOUND ABROAD Hawaan Clevelander Comments on Dspatches. Blaek Ht Whte ly lvr nt Sa tlonhta KfttnTlf pon the Republc. Soon after the publcaton of recent dspatches from Hawa n the 'nted States the followng was publshed n the Cleveland (O.) Leader over the sgnature of an "Hawaan Clevelander" Foes wthn and foes wthout. "A feelng of mpendng run pervades the lttle Republc of Hawa." s that Readng Hawaan news as gleaned BO? from the varous cty papers of yesterday, the wrter of ths artcle was remnded of an ncdent connected wth a vst to New York cty some years ago Durng a bref stay there the lttle daughter of a frend was ntrusted wth a message from her mother to myrfelf. Not fndng me at home, whther she had been drected, and learnng where could most probably be found, she stll sought me. Hhe wen led her way to one of the noted churches of that large cty, but found herself unable to make her way through the vast concourse of people assembled, so was oblged to return home wth her msson unfulflled. The mother, amused at the chld's persstence n what was comparatvely an unmportnt errand, asked why, when she had gone so far, she dd not fnally succeed. Her reply was, "Mamma, you couldn't fnd your own self there." So dscover that even a Hawaan mght be befogged and confounded by sensatonal rumors that seem to fnd floatng space n Unted States atraos phere. Under such crcumstances t may be dffcult to get one's bearngs, but there are some thngs that may safely be btated. For nstance.t may be sad, wtl exact truth, that black has suddenly become whte, or vce versa, as to say wth truth that "Thurston las gone back to propose the restoraton of a monarchy wth Kaulan on the throne." That statement s even beyodd the stretch of magnaton. We rase no oueston s to reports purportng to be gotten from Colonel Ashford, havng come from any other source than the one gven, but to gve them as comng from the "Attorney General of Hawa" s a msleader. As proof of the fact, the name of the Attorney General of Hawa s the very uncon mon one "Smth," but wth the partcular desgnatng prefx "W. O." "There s a perfect regn of terror n the nlands." ndeed "A Republc seems! an mpossbl tv." Whv such able statesmen as Dole, Hatch, and others, wth a numercally complete advsory councl, where are tlev? They must have lad asde ther dutes to go yachtng! "A large part of the populaton are ncapable of governng themselves." That may be sad of every naton on the face of the tflobe; but n thnkng of awa, there come before me faces and forms of a9 staunch, true, able men, of Hawaan blood, as can be sfted out from any natonalty that can be named. socalle d "As long as ths republc can pay armed men to keep down rebellon, t wll last, and no longer." n any of the late uprsngs, has the whole burden of the solder needs been left to the armed men alone? No, ndeed! an hour's notce can brng out at any tme, there, as loyal a volunteer corps as can be found anywhere. They are not on the baseball grounds when they are needed for duty. "The greatest fear of the Hawaan Government s Japan." Yes, f the Unted States chooses, so far as she may be concerned, to play wth outlyng terrtory, as wth a toy or bubble. Japan, wth her delberate shrewdness and foresght, may take nto consderaton the advsablty of Hawa n relaton to her own country. Personally hope always to see frendly relatons exstng between the republc of Hawa and Japan, for remember wth great pleasure the courtesy wth whch the Japanese legaton n Honolulu extended protecton to the wves and famles of Amercan ctzens throughout a very tryng emergency n S9;, when Am ercau famles knew they could not ask such from ther Amercan representatve. t s most sncerely to be hoped that the present form of government n Hawa wll unte all the natons and by all foregn pow also be respected ers. LBRARY ASSOCATON MEETS. Buldng to be Enlarged Request of Bshop Museum Dened. A specal busness meetng of the Lbrary and Readng Room Assocaton was held last evenng at the rooms of the assocaton.
