The film was produced in Poona (now Pune) as a partnership venture in Marathi and Tamil with the later day Indian movie mogul AV. Meiyappan as the partner of the Tamil version. The film was directed by well known cameraman and Marathi filmmaker Keshav Rao Dhaibar. The cast included T. R. Mahalingam (his film debut), T. P. Rajalakshmi, C.V.V. Panthulu, T. S. Rajalakshmi, T.R. Ramachandran (his debut) and others. It was the first film for many of them. Helping Dhaibar for the Tamil version in the script and direction was another newcomer, later the noted writer-director and producer, A. T. Krishnaswamy (ATK). The talented but sadly underrated film music composer, S. V. Venkataraman also came into films with Nandakumar. The kid Krishna was played by Master Sethuraman. Later, as Madurai Sethuraman, he made a mark as the singer for noted Bharathanatyam dancers and toured all over the world. (A good pal of this writer, he passed away some years ago.) T. R. Mahalingam played the boy Krishna and became a star with his very first film. A song sung by the actress playing Krishna s mother Devaki was not up to mark and Meiyappan, ATK, Dhaibar and others were disappointed with the quality of her singing. Understandably they were eager to re-shoot the sequence with some other star but, for many reasons, it was not feasible. Meiyappan and others thought hard and then came up with an innovative idea. Why not replace only the sound track with another voice and shoot the song with the actress moving only her lips in sync? (The movie world lingo for synchronization ). AVM gave the go-ahead signal and a prominent classical Carnatic musician based in Bombay, Lalitha Venkataraman, was brought in and she sang that song. The scene was re-shot with the actress moving her lips to the Bombay musician s singing. And, lo, the playback system was born in Tamil cinema and Meiyappan made South Indian film history! And Lalitha Venkataraman earned the credit of being the first playback singer in Tamil cinema. Even after playback system became established and the pre-recording of songs before the shoot became technically possible, the songs were sung by the artistes themselves and not by off-screen voice-lending playback singers. One of the earliest of off -screen singers was V. R. Dhanam (sister of the noted stage, screen and TV star, late lamented V. Gopalakrishnan). The famed filmmaker of his day, Sundar Rao Nadkarni (He made films like Haridas, Shantha Sakkubai, En Manaivi, Krishna Vijayam, Sudarshan, and Mahadevi.) recorded a song for Sakkubai (1939) which he picturised on T. S. Krishnaveni. Another classical Carnatic musician who sang in films behind the screen during late 1930s was the great exponent and star performer D. K. Pattammal. Her rendering of an emotionally charged patriotic song written by celebrated Tamil writer and journalist, Kalki ( Ra. Krishnamurthy) and composed by Papanasam Sivan, Desa Sevai Seyya Vaareer, in the Tamil film classic Thyaga Bhoomi (1939) became very popular, reflecting the mood of the times when the atmosphere was charged with Indian Freedom Movement. Interestingly, this song was not issued as a gramophone record along with the other songs of the film, and was brought out later as a private disc by DKP with no mention of the origin of the song. The producers were afraid that the record might be banned by the then British Indian rulers! Other playback singers from the world of classical music include (Radha) Jayalakshmi, K. J. Yesudas, Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, P. Leela, and M. L. Vasanthakumari. She appeared on screen in a scene in R. S. Mani s Krishna Bhakthi (1948) singing s a song in a concert in a king s court. She looked slim and very attractive in that scene! (To be continued) V. My mother was the last of the Rajah s generous product of 6 children to my beautiful grandmother whose bewitching beauty conquered the narrow wall of caste, leaving me, my granny s grandson, to inherit the royal dark skin of Kerala Varma. I have the proud privilege of inheriting the royal epidermis, says my mother who was probably 4 years old when the old bloke left for a meeting with Yama leaving the Nair scions impoverished. The link between the Royalty thus established, I wanted to meet the present head of the Chirakkal Kovilagam, now a mere name after Indira abolished Royalty, of whom nephew Das spoke in glowing terms. The reigning Rajah Sri Kerala Varma, Valia Thamburan, is a retired Physical Director of a College in Madras, (Presidency College, I think he said) and that cemented our connection further, because I had been a Presidentian, years before young muscles did not prevail over the skulled grey matter that now leads to bus-wars. Nephew Das and I were before Royalty and Mrs. Royalty. As is mandated by the Constitution of India, one of their sons is in Obamaland and the other is in Bangalore. His copious grey hair and walrus moustache and the robust physique and a firm handshake, my debut with royalty, made me wonder whether my maternal grandfather was similarly endowed! Das, who was in Chirakkal then, when I expressed a desire to visit my grandfather s palace, took Lakshmi and me in his car to Aduthala but there was not even a photograph of the elusive Rajah or even an oil painting. Government clears new safety rules for school buses The Tamilnadu Cabinet on Sept. 26 approved the new guidelines on safety measures in school vehicles, the draft of which was submitted in the Madras High Court recently. The State Government submitted a report before the court, laying fresh safety guidelines for school buses in Tamilnadu in the wake of the death of a Class 2 student, Shruthi, on July 25 after she fell through a hole in the floor of her school bus and was run over. The special rules lay stress on the qualification and experience of the bus crew, stating that a driver should have at least 5 years of experience in similar category of vehicles and that he should not have been fined more than twice in a year for minor traffic offences such as signal jumping or violation of lane discipline. He should not have been booked even once for The Madras High Court has refused to lift the police ban on use and sale of stone and glass powder-coated maanja (kite thread) in Chennai. Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar, dismissing a writ petition filed by an association of kite sellers (Chennai Katradi Urpathiyalargal Virpanayalargal Sangam) last week, said that the regulatory measure was introduced by police after the death of some persons, and purely as a public safety initiative. The association sought to restrain the City Police Commissioner from interfering with the manufacture and sale of kites and threads in Chennai, saying police interference was affecting the business of its members. In the city, kite season begins in offences such as overspeeding, drunken driving and dangerous driving resulting in fatal accident. The crew shall wear a khaki uniform too, the rules say. As for attendants, the special rules state that he/she should be aged between 21 and 50 years and should be medically fit to get down first from the bus at each stopping point to facilitate embarkation and disembarkation of children. In case of vehicles exclusively carrying girl children, there shall be a female attendant in the vehicle. School buses should be inspected once in three months, and a district-level committee headed by the Regional Transport Officer and having parent representatives shall discuss, decide and recommend measures relating to the safety of children and their transportation. School heads welcomed the decision to have an exclusive parentteacher association as part of the school-level transport committee. Correspondent of Shree Niketan Group of Schools P. We can vouch for the fitness of the vehicles but restricting the vehicles age would have put us in deep trouble. In both cases, maanja threads were seized and sent for forensic examination. Police said that traders apply rice paste and stone powder to the thread to make them stiff and strong for flying kites. In some cases, crushed glass powder is used to make the thread fit for cutting the opponent s kite, they said. Such threads are prohibited as they would endanger the lives of people if used on streets and in public. Noting that kite sale is not being prevented, police said that only dangerous threads are considered illegal. The prohibition is reasonable and it is regulatory in nature and not prohibitory, police said. Justice Paul Vasanthakumar said: It is a well accepted principle of law that when private interest and public safety are pitted against each other, public interest alone will prevail.
