5 August 27 - September 2, 2011 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY THE AVM STORY - 78 Sridhar soon promoted his own production unit Chitralaya which forged ahead to be a successful and noted film company with many hits in its portfolio. He hit big time and created film history with Nenjil Ore Alayam (1962, Tamil). Again a melodramatic love triangle involving a doctor, his former sweetheart, and her sick husband, now his patient, the film had many interesting features. It was shot in claustrophobic sets of a private nursing home, and the indoor photography was brilliant with camera angles never before seen in South Indian Cinema. The man behind the camera was Aloysius Vincent, one of the finest painters with light in Indian Cinema. The main players were Kalyan Kumar (an import from Kannada Cinema and excellent actor), R. Muthuraman (new face from the stage, soon to be star), and C. A. Devika (a star in the making). The film was shot in less than 30 days, a record for that day in Indian Cinema and it raised many eyebrows! Another major plus factor responsible for the enormous success of the film was the melodious music composed by the famous duo Viswanathan-Ramamurthy. Many songs became hits and are remembered and hummed to this day. After this sensational success, Sridhar forged ahead to be a force in Indian Cinema. His major hits include Dil Ek Mandir (1963, Hindi remake of Nenjil Ore Alayam ), Kathalikka Neramillai (1964, Tamil), Vennira Aadai (1965, Tamil, it introduced the cult figure, clout-plus political leader and currently Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha to Tamil cinema), Pyar Kiye Jaa (1966, Hindi remake of Kathalikka Neramillai ), Urimai Kural (1974, Tamil), Seetha Geetha Daatithey (1977, Telugu) and several others. Bhai Bhai is essentially a family melodrama of two brothers, and the interesting and unusual element is that it is the elder brother who goes astray abandoning his loving dutiful wife and the younger brother brings him back to even keel and to the family fold to live happily thereafter. In India, especially in Hindu joint families, the first born, eldest brother, enjoys a special status and stature. So does his wife. Once the father dies he becomes the pater familius and rules over the family. His word is law and others have to implicitly follow him. However, in recent years, with the break-up of the joint family system due to many reasons, sociological, economical, impact of western culture, mores and life style and others the situation is different. The reel-life brothers were played by real-life brothers, top stars of Indian cinema, Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar, and this brilliant casting by Meiyappan added extra impact and interest in the film. Ashok Kumar Ganguly was perhaps the only movie star in India to enjoy the longest innings dating back to 1936 almost always at the top. Born into a well-placed lawyer s family in Bhaghalpur, Bihar, he too studied law but gave up to land in movies in Bombay as laboratory assistant with the famed Bombay Talkies. Here he had a break as actor in the milestone movie and film classic, Achyut Kanya (1936) opposite the Grand Dame of Indian Cinema, Devika Rani. The film dealt with the controversial love affair between a high-born Brahmin youth (Ashok Kumar) and low-born Untouchable girl (Devika Rani) and the complications that arise over such socially condemned relationship. However the success of Achyut Kanya did not bestow stardom on Ashok Kumar. As Devika Rani was not impressed with him, he was paired with Leela Chitnis and the films with her, Bandhan (1941) and Naya Sansar (1941) made him a star. Then came Kismet (1940) and its phenomenal box-office record-creating success made Ashok Kumar a big name and an all-india star. Since then he never looked back. He turned producer and directed a few films but he was always a star. His cinematic style of underplayed acting brought him fame and name and his long and impressive track record made him an icon of Indian Cinema. An evergreen person, his fine films include Humayun (1945), Mahal (1949), Samadhi (1950), Afsana (1950), Deedar (1950), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Howrah Bridge (1958), Gumrah (1963), Oonche Log (1965), Aradhana (1965), and many others. (To be continued) Boy s death sparks attack on hospital Members and friends of the family of S. Vinoth Kumar (13) (resident of 17/32, Pillayar Koil Street, T. Nagar), who died in a private hospital on Usman Road, T. Nagar, damaged some property claiming that negligence of the doctors had resulted in the boy s death on Aug. 21. Vinoth was rushed to the hospital after suffering a seizure. He was a Std. 8 student of M.C.N. School, T. Nagar. It is said that Vinoth had visited the nearby Amman Temple where a festival was being celebrated. He suddenly collapsed. His father G. Sivaji works as a salesman in a textile show- room and mother Vijayalakshmi is a housewife. His elder brother Kishore Kumar is a 2 nd year engineering student. Relatives said that no doctor was present in the hospital and one arrived long after being informed over phone. After Wins several medals in javelin throw Rashmeka Narayanan (resident of Subhashree Apartments, 10, Postal Colony 4 th Street, West Mambalam and Std.11 student of Shri B. S. Mootha School, West Mambalam) won the bronze medal in javelin throw (under-16 category) in the South Zone Junior Athletic Meet held in Hyderabad on Aug. 21. She had earlier won gold medals in javelin throw in the 26 th Tamil Nadu Junior Inter District Athletic Championship organized by Tamil Nadu Athletic Association and Virdhunagar District Athletic Association in Sivakasi, and 6 th inter-state St. Joseph s Inter-school Sports festival conducted by St. Joseph s col- lege of Engineering. Rashmeka, who studied till Std.10 in Mumbai, represented West Zone and Maharashtra in national-level competitions. She won a total of 10 gold medals in the event in district, State and zonal competitions conducted in Mumbai during She told Mambalam Times that she was interested in swimming, badminton, shotput, running and long/high jump but chose to concentrate on javelin throw. She said that she is doing a diploma course in Fine Arts (Bharathanatyam). Hospital staff informed Pondy Bazaar police who rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters. Vinoth s relatives later sent the body to Government Royapettah hospital for postmortem.
