Nagar Branch, Natesan Road, Ashok Nagar) introduced I stamping facility on Sept. 17. This facility helps people buy stamp papers of any denomination in a single sheet by making payment in the bank without going to stamp paper vendors. It was inaugurated by the S. R. Kamath (Deputy General Manager of Chennai City Region of Bank of Baroda) and Meera Ranganathan (Zonal Head-South, Stockholding Corporation). The facility was simultane- ously introduced in branches in Anna Nagar, St. Thomas Mount, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram. Mandolin Shrinivas passes away Popular Carnatic musician Mandolin U. Shrinivas passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on Sept. 19. According to doctors, the 45- year-old musician, who had undergone a liver transplant and was recuperating, developed some complications and passed away. He had given a number of performances in leading sabhas and halls in the neighbourhood. Shrinivas was the first person to use the mandolin in Carnatic music. He modified the instrument to suit the Carnatic pitch and raga. He is said to have found the instrument in a studio where his father was employed. He had also performed a number of fusion concerts with many leading western musicians. He had distinguished himself in collaborations with artistes of the calibre of Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Sivamani, Vikku Vinaykram and Dominique Piazza. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in Shrinivas is survived by his parents, brother Mandolin U. Rajesh and sister. Nagar and Parry s Corner gains pace low-grade cotton made into an absorbent non-woven mat that can collect up to 50 times its own weight in oil. The results strengthen the use of cotton as a natural absorbent for oil. Ramkumar, who spoke to Mambalam Times from the US, said that in the project that took four years, scientists tried to create a fundamental understanding of the effect of fibre structure and basic characteristics of cotton on oil absorption capacity of unprocessed raw cotton. The work also examined the basic mechanisms behind oil absorption by non-woven cotton webs, he said. He said that Fibertect will have tremendous potential for application in realtime oil spill scenarios along with environmental sustainability and commercial acceptability.
