1 Lumen Christi CATHOLIC COMMUNITY 2055 Bohland Avenue Saint Paul, MN Phone We are called to be the Light of Christ in the world. Mission Statement November 5, 2017 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A The greatest among you must be your servant. Matthew 23:11 Pope Francis Models Being a Servant. Fr. Solanus Casey Beatified, November 18, 2017, in Detroit Who Was Fr. Solanus Casey? Fr. Solanus Casey was born in Oak Grove, WI, near Prescott, to farming Irish immigrant parents. As a young man he worked in Stillwater as a lumberjack, a prison guard and a street car operator. A shocking encounter at the scene of a murder on the trolley tracks led him to listen to God s call. He eventually became a Capuchin priest after failing at his first attempt because of low grades. He continued to struggle with grades but was so committed to poverty, chastity and obedience that his superiors were impressed and he was ordained a simple priest, meaning he could not hear confessions or deliver homilies. A humble servant, he worked in the role of sacristan, director of Women s Guilds and altar boys, and doorkeeper. He gained a reputation for patience, spiritual insight, comforting presence, and prophetic vision. Those that Fr. Solanus enrolled in the Seraphic Mass Association, used by Capuchins as a means of intercessory prayer, reported so many blessings that Fr. Solanus was directed to keep a record. By the end of his life, he had filled seven notebooks with over 6,000 cases of answered prayers. Reports of prayers answered through his intercession continue today. His brother Fr. Edward Casey was a pastor at our previous parish, St. Therese. -Winona Diocese Courier November 5-11 is Vocation Awareness Week Baptism calls each of us to holiness and bears unique fruit in each human heart.

PARISH NEWS We Remember In November, we call our deceased loved ones into our minds, hearts and liturgical celebrations in a special way. We invite you to bring a small, framed photo of your deceased loved one(s) to church. You may place them on the glass tables in the gathering space, around the Mary Statue or on the wooden stand, both in the Tabernacle Chapel. We also invite you to inscribe the name of your loved one(s) in the Book of Remembrance, which will rest on the stand next to the Daily Mass Chapel. Please retrieve your photos by November 26 so the church can be prepared for the Advent season. You are Invited to Bring Up the Gifts! Did you know that there is a form on the usher s table in the back of church where you can sign your name to bring up the gifts? Anytime a line is open, just sign your names before Mass. You are asked to leave your pew after we pray the Creed; please stand near the gift table during the prayers of the faithful. That way, helpers know that the gift-presenters are ready. At 10:30 am, if you have children in CLW, you may need to take them out early, so that you are ready to walk down the aisle once Father Paul stands in front of the altar. Usually there is a hospitality person to help direct the timing of the gift procession. Any questions? Contact Sister Lynore. Francis Basket Donations This weekend is our monthly Francis Basket Food Market collection. Food or cash are appreciated. Neighborhood House staff and volunteers use the Food Market as an entry point to make sure those in need have the services available to them. Your generosity plays a transformative role in the lives of families seeking education, financial stability, and other resources for a healthy life. 4 LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Community Building Do it. Justice Lumen Christi Justice Block Party Good Times! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2017 Block Party in September. Another beautiful evening filled with fellowship, food and fun. The Lumen Christi/Highland Catholic Block Party is our annual celebration that brings parishioners, school families and neighbors together. Our number one objective is community building and second, keeping it simple. Although the Block Party is not intended to be a fundraiser, this year s event netted $5k. These funds will be used to support the general operating budget. Mark Your Calendars -- The 2018 Block Party is Scheduled for September 8! We are looking for 2 new coordinators for next year and some committee heads. Last years coordinators are happy to walk you through it. It is mainly run by s and very few meetings are needed. If you d like to get involved with this fun and exciting event, please contact Michaela Bisanz, mbisanz@lumenchristicc.org or Jane Schmidt, j.schmidt@lumenchristicc.org. Discover Your Inner Disciple Parishioner Chuck Nehls A huge thank-you to my wonderful Highland Park neighbor, Chuck Nehls. Chuck can be seen every day around Highland Park in his bright yellow vest and baseball cap, volunteering his time to make our neighborhood a better place. He trims trees, picks up trash, walks children to school, weeds the boulevards, and greets everyone with his kind-hearted smile. He makes our neighborhood shine, and he makes my family proud to live in this community. He puts the saint in St. Paul. Anne Ablan, Highland Park Printed in the St. Paul Pioneer Press & Highland Villager DISCIPLESHIP. It s all about gratitude. It s all about giving back. It s all about God. Parishioner Mike Harley & His Wife Shanaz Padamsee Share Their Thoughts on Immigration Mike Harley and Shanaz Padamsee are married. Mike is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Environmental Initiative. Shanaz Padamsee is a Special Needs Teaching Aid at Battle Creek Elementary in St. Paul. We see ourselves as a family of immigrants. I, Shanaz, grew up in India and came to this country for the opportunity to attend college, as did each of my three sisters. We left home not to flee hardship, but for a liberal arts education that would not be available in India. I am a naturalized American citizen, and each of us are working to serve the communities in which we live, as teachers, as a business owner and as a scientist. I, Mike, come from a family with strong roots in Ireland and Italy, with grandparents and great grandparents that immigrated through Ellis Island. I am a citizen of both Ireland and America, and have traveled back to meet my father s cousins. My mother s Italian heritage shows through my cooking and in the holiday traditions we observe. On both sides, my family left Europe to find prosperity in place of poverty. It is easy for us to identify with stories of immigrants coming to our country today, whether for opportunity or to escape hardship. America always has been made stronger for welcoming the immigrant. It s part of what makes us feel like we are truly at home here, and that s something that we would hope for every other new immigrant who seeks to find a home in our midst.

5 LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Council Connections Full Ministry Reports can be found at: September Minutes Parish Council Ministry Council s welcomed new members and focused on 2017/2018 strategic plans. All councils expressed the need for continued collaboration. Strategic plans continue to drive Lumen Us strategic goals. Discipleship and Parish Life Ministry Council is focusing now on clarifying the best partnerships we can form both inside and outside the parish, to continue to encourage interested parishioners in volunteering in one or more of the many ministries of Lumen Christi Catholic Community, and to spiritually grow in our ministry to others. We are disciples of our faith, both called to be our best selves as Christians and sent to do the Lord s work. The simplest, smallest moments we have in this calling can be the most fruitful. Opening ourselves to growing, learning, and becoming is embedded in our nature. We welcome everyone in that calling. Faith Formation Ministry Council along with several other ministry committees shared our concern about needing a parish-wide database to better engage volunteers. How to accomplish this has yet to be determined. We are also discussing sacramental youth ministry for high school students. Finance Ministry Council set goals for the coming year. Stewardship will be a key focus. School Ministry Council is happy to welcome three new members: Ann DeMarco, Joe Peterson, Jim Kleinberg. Our stated goals this year are school sustainability and developing a five-year plan. Pastoral Care and Social Justice The newly formed Pastoral Care Committee is now up and running with 6 members, working on a mission statement and action plan. The Social Justice Committee submitted an initiative to help those in need (including immigrants) as a key part of LCCC mission of being the Light of Christ in the world. Worship Ministry Council identified membership roles and is in the process of inviting additional members. We shared our values about Eucharistic Adoration and its future. We will align our annual plan more clearly in relationship with the LumenUs strategic goals, and identify areas of synergy between the work of other ministry councils. The practice of discernment of spirits can increase the self-honesty we need for decision-making in life. Benedictine practices help us to notice and reflect on what moves within imaginings, emotions, inclinations, desires and then to act on that understanding. The Christian tradition of discernment of these inner movements began with the desert tradition, continued with St. Benedict and was given modern expression by St. Ignatius. The ultimate intention is to grow in loving relationship with God, others and even to self. Free. Refreshments , theologyday@csbsju.edu.
