New Parishioner Registration This Weekend New Parishioner registration is available after Masses on Sunday in the Gathering Area. A parish representative will meet with you to fill out the paperwork and answer any questions. Welcome! Serving Others in Need: Neighborhood House is our Connection Are you interested in learning more about how we can increase our presence in the community? Save the date of Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 pm in the First Floor Conference Room for an informational meeting on how Lumen Christi parishioners can volunteer and help coordinate new opportunities at Neighborhood House. We help those who would benefit from our service, so they may realize the best possible future for themselves and their family. There are many needs, and Lumen Christi parishioners have an opportunity to answer this call for volunteering. Neighborhood House in St. Paul has provided over 120 years of service to those in need. This includes a significant focus on new immigrants quickly moving to employability and adjusting to their new lives. Substantial needs exist for additional services, including access to wholesome food on a regular basis and to increase their English language skills, to name two such outreach opportunities. As a parish, we have powerful talents and a willingness to effect change. Let s multiply the impact by building on this partnership. Join us on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 pm.

3 LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Pastoral Care Sacrament of Our Solidarity with Our Neighbors who are Sick and Suffering Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5:14 On September 15, at 4:30 pm Mass, we will celebrate the Anointing of the Sick as a community. All are invited to participate, whether you would like to receive the Sacrament, accompany a family member or friend, or lift your voice in solidarity with the community s prayers. You are invited to receive the Sacrament if you wish, whether you are experiencing physical illness, mental illness or if you are sick at heart. A communal celebration is the ideal for this Sacrament, as it invites and encourages everyone to unite in faith and prayer around experiences that touch all of us: vulnerability, sickness and pain. We come together in prayer to remember how the transforming love of God is ever-present in our midst, even and especially in illness, struggle and death. If you would like to be anointed at Mass, please tcramer-elsner@lumenchristicc.org or call the parish office so we can assure enough seating for you and any family/friends who accompany you. Also contact us if you would like to volunteer to greet before Mass and help people to their seats. Lumen Christi Catholic Community Along with O Halloran & Murphy Are Hosting Advance Funeral Planning Seminars Thursday, September 20 9:00 am OR 6:00 pm Lumen Christi Community Room Attend this program and learn about: Spiritual, procedural and financial aspects of Advance Funeral Planning The Catholic Health Care Directive MN Medical Assistance Law and how it applies to funerals and other legal tools Veteran s burial benefits To register: Call the parish office at or tcramer-elsner@lumenchristicc.org Grandparents Day, September 9 Homily for the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) Grandparents Day The last line of the Gospel this weekend: did you hear it? He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. Isaiah celebrates the healing of several physical disabilities: to be able to see, hear, speak, and more. But the way Saint Mark tells the story in the Gospel, the people are most astonished at hearing and speaking. The ability to speak gives us the opportunity to express ourselves, share good news, and hum a tune. These abilities to hear and to speak are important to our society as well. Speaking and being heard. Listening and sharing. These are the cornerstones of what Pope Francis calls the practice of encounter. The value of the encounter speaking and hearing becomes clearer still when we see violence between nations, misunderstanding between races, and the rancor of our politics. It can even infect our family lives. But the family is, in fact, the place where we learn to speak with respect. We hear and listen to cultivate empathy. The dynamics of family can be varied and complex. When our elderly loved ones are present, they can be a blessed treasure. Appreciating these senior family members, or friends or neighbors for that matter, teaches the succeeding generations valuable insights and lessons. They can add wisdom and humor and great memories that the younger family members need to hear and appreciate. That way the young ones grow in understanding about where they come from, and so learn more about themselves. That is always a great blessing. There may be times when elders don t seem to bring those gifts. Often they can be burdened with some of the very things we read about in Scripture today. Eyesight fails. Hearing loss becomes aggravating. Legs and hands can be stiffened and uncooperative. Isaiah, James, and Jesus, along with today s Psalm, all point to these vulnerabilities. Some elderly folks are all too acquainted with such hard realities. Saint James tells us not to show favoritism to the wealthy. In the same way, I think it can be understood that we are not to overlook the weak, the needy, and the elderly around us. God doesn t. Francis Cardinal George, the former archbishop of Chicago, used to say, Poor people are rich people s ticket out of hell. My riff on that is, Sick people are healthy people s ticket out of hell. The time we give, the affection we show, and the kindness we offer to our elders are precious gifts to them and sacred offerings to God. All the readings point to God s affection for those who live with what the rest of us call disabilities. Saint James warns against distinctions between rich and poor. He also wants us to avoid spiritual poverty. That is a poverty that makes us forget where we come from, who we are, whose we are. Isn t it ironic that the very people whose memories might be failing are exactly the ones who remind us? Loyola Press grandparents day
