4 Father Peter Mactutis / Padre Pedro Mactutis Dear parishioners, Here is a short prayer from a writing of St. Columban, (he lived in Ireland in the 500 s): How I wish my Lord would awaken me, his humble servant, from the sleep of slothfulness, even though I am of little worth. How I wish he would enkindle me with that fire of divine love. The flames of his love burn beyond the stars; the longing for his overwhelming delights and the divine fire ever burn within me! How I wish I might deserve to have my lantern always burning at night in the temple of my Lord, to give light to all who enter the house of my God. Give me, I pray you, Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ, your Son and my God, that love that does not fail so that my lantern, burning within me and giving light to others, may be always lighted and never extinguished. Jesus, our most loving Savior, be pleased to light our lanterns, so that they might burn for ever in your temple, receiving eternal light from you, the eternal light, to lighten our darkness and to ward off from us the darkness of the world. Give your light to my lantern, I beg you, my Jesus, so that by its light I may see that holy of holies which receives you as the eternal priest entering among the columns of your great temple. May I ever see you only, look on you, long for you; may I gaze with love on you alone, and have my lantern shining and burning always in your presence. All Souls day Memorial Candles/ Velas Conmemorativas para el Dia del Alma We will continue selling the all Souls day candles for a donation of $ These candles will be blessed and lit prior to the All Soul's Day Mass and will be left burning in the Church for approximately 6 days. Proceeds from the candles will once again benefit the perpetual care of our cemetery. St Mary does not accept credit cards so have your cash or check book with you. Candles will be available after the Masses on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29th until sold out. They will only be available from members of the Cemetery committee after Sunday Masses (not in the office). Candles will also be available at St. Anne from Colleen Thomas. Quotes of the Week There is nothing more worthwhile than to pray to God and to converse with him, for prayer unites us with God as his companions. As our bodily eyes are illuminated by seeing the light, so in contemplating God our soul is illuminated by him. Of course the prayer I have in mind is no matter of routine, it is deliberate and earnest. It is not tied down to a fixed timetable; rather it is a state which endures by night and day. Our souls should be directed in God, not merely when we suddenly think of prayer, but even when we are concerned with something else. If we are looking after the poor, if we are busy in some other way, or if we are doing any type of good work, we should season our actions with the desire and the remembrance of God. Through this salt of the love of God we can all become a sweet dish for the Lord. Prayer is absolutely essential to the Christian life. What sort of relationship would you have with people if they were around you all the time and you never talked to them? The same is true of God, who of course, is always near to us, even if we are far from Him. Self-discipline is necessary for growth, and this is as true in the life of prayer as in any other area of our lives. Love is proven when we have to do something which goes against our own self-interested desires. Our love for God is proven in our keeping up the discipline of prayer even when prayer is dry, seems fruitless, and it feels as if God is not close or hearing us. If prayer was always easy, or always felt good, we could often find ourselves doing it for the wrong reasons, reasons other than the love of God. Even in those times of dryness or when prayer is otherwise difficult, we must trust that God is working for our benefit. As St. Paul reminds us, all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose (Rm 8:28). Prayer is both a gift of grace and a determined response on our part. It always presupposes effort. The great figures of prayer of the Old Covenant before Christ, as well as the Mother of God, the saints, and he himself, all teach us this: prayer is a battle. Against whom? Against ourselves and against the wiles of the tempter who does all he can to turn man away from prayer, away from union with God. We pray as we live, because we live as we pray. If we do not want to act habitually according to the Spirit of Christ, neither can we pray habitually in his name. The spiritual battle of a Christian s new life is inseparable from the battle of prayer.
