We believe the soul of a person who dies in a state of perfect grace and communion with God in Christ is brought to heaven Those who die in a state of mortal sin are naturally condemned by their choice to eternal separation from God, hell. And purgatory, which is where most people, free of mortal sin, but still in a state of lesser (venial) sin, must go. Purgatory is necessary so that souls can be cleansed and perfected before they enter into heaven. There is scriptural basis for this belief. The primary reference is in 2 Maccabees, 12:26 and 12:32. "Turning to supplication, they prayed that the sinful deed might be fully blotted out... Thus made atonement for the dead that they might be free from sin." Consistent with these teachings and traditions, Catholics believe that through the prayers of the faithful on Earth, the dead are purified so that they may enter into heaven. Learning and Practicing the Faith As we enter the month of November this week, when we traditionally remember the faithful departed, we will be looking into the Catholic view of death and our practices surrounding it. Death is a great mystery that has variously fascinated and terrified humanity. What makes it particularly difficult is the fact that (before Jesus) no one returns from the dead permanently, and so we In a sense bodily death is natural, but for faith it is in fact the wages of sin. (CCC 1006). Death is natural, in the sense that it is a universal human experience. On the other hand, the Church teaches us that death entered the world on account of man s sin. Even though man s nature is mortal God had destined him not to die. Death was therefore contrary to the plans of God the Creator and entered the world as a consequence of sin. Bodily death, from which man would have been immune had he not sinned is thus the last enemy of man left to be conquered. (CCC, 1008). Death is not how things were supposed to be. God, who is an eternal procession of love as the Trinity, made us to share in his everlasting life and love. It was thus only through sin, through the act of our first parents turning their backs on God, that death became part of being human. But death does not only have this negative meaning for us. Death is transformed by Christ. Jesus, the Son of God, also himself suffered the death that is part of the human condition. (CCC, 1009). What is essentially new about Christian death is this: through Baptism, the Christian has already died with Christ sacramentally in order to live a new life; and if we die in Christ s grace, physical death completes this dying with Christ and so completes our incorporation into him in his redeeming act.
