2 PASTOR S LETTER/ CARTA DEL PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Mercy implies two things; first, that something went wrong; and two, that God wants to heal it. In the Divine Mercy image of Jesus there are two rays of light coming from Jesus. The rays are striking and direct. They are meant to penetrate through anything that is wounded and then bring about healing. I think God s mercy is scary to people because it also implies that his desire to heal will change us, and we are afraid of change. The rays are coming from Jesus s heart. If we first see his heart and his love for us, then we will not be so afraid of this healing change. I hope you all have a blessed Easter season, Fr. 4 DISCIPLESHIP, AND EVANGELIZATION Quote of the Week Although we know that the Mass ends, it opens a commitment to Christian witness. Christians do not go to Mass to complete a weekly task and then forget, no. Christians go to Mass to participate in the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord and then to live more as Christians: it opens a commitment to Christian witness. We leave the church building to go in peace to bring God s blessing to our daily activities, in our homes, in the workplace, among the occupations of the earthly city, glorifying the Lord by our life. But if we leave church by chatting and saying look at this, look at that, gossiping, the Mass has not entered my heart. Why? Because I cannot live Christian witness. Every time I go out after Mass, I have to go out better than when I entered, with more life, more strength, more desire to give witness to Christ. Through the Eucharist the Lord Jesus enters into us, in our heart and in our flesh, so that we may express in life the sacrament received in faith. From celebration to life, therefore, aware that the Mass finds fulfillment in the concrete choices of those who are involved in the first person in the mysteries of Christ. We must not forget that we celebrate the Eucharist to learn how to become Eucharistic men and women. What does this mean? It means letting Christ act in our works: that His thoughts are our thoughts, our feelings, our choices. And this is holiness: doing what Christ did is Christian holiness. -Pope Francis, 4/4/2018 Learning and Living the Faith Q: What are the four marks of the Church? A: In the Nicene Creed which we recite at Mass on most Sundays, immediately following the section on the Holy Spirit, we state that we believe in the Church, but we use four words to describe exactly what sort of Church it is in which we believe: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. These have become known as the four marks of the Church; that is, these are four ways that we can distinguish the Church of Christ from other organizations and institutions that may appear throughout history. These four characteristics, inseparably linked with each other, indicate essential features of the Church and her mission. (CCC, 811). But they are not something the Church has of its own accord. Rather, they are the gift of God: The Church does not possess them of herself; it is Christ who, through the Holy Spirit, makes his Church one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, and it is he who calls her to realize each of these qualities. (CCC, 811). These four marks allow us to see that the Catholic Church is in fact the Church founded by Jesus Christ, because it alone contains these qualities in the fullness of what was handed on by Christ through the apostles. This does not mean that other Christian communities have nothing; in fact, some of them have many of these elements in varying degrees. We mean that only the Catholic Church has everything which Jesus willed the Church to have and to pass on to His followers. Through looking at these marks and Christian history, we can see a great and perpetual motive of credibility and an irrefutable witness of [the Church s] divine mission.
