4 Father Peter Mactutis Priest / Padre Peter Mactutis Sacerdote De La Parroquia Dear Parishioners, One of my favorite books is called Letters From The Desert, it is written by Carlo Carretto. Carlo Carretto was a member of the Little Brothers Religious Order, which dedicated themselves to living amongst the poorest of the poor, to pray for them and love them as their brother and sister. I want to share with you a quote from the book. I have come into the desert to pray, to learn to pray. It has been the Sahara s great gift to me, and I should like to share it with my Friends. It is immeasurable and contains every gifts within itself. It is the sine qua non of life, the treasure buried in the field, the Pearl of great price discovered in the market. Prayer is the sum of our relationship with God. We are what we pray. The degree of our faith is the degree of our prayer. The strength of our hope is the strength of our prayer. The warmth of our charity is the warmth of our prayer. No more nor less. Our prayer has had a beginning because we have had a beginning. But it will have no end. It will accompany us into eternity and will be completed in our contemplation of God, when we join in the harmony of heaven and are filled with the flood of delights. Blessings, Fr. Quote of the Week "Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad" (Jn 8:56). According to these words of Jesus, Abraham s faith pointed to him; in some sense it foresaw his mystery. So Saint Augustine understood it when he stated that the patriarchs were saved by faith, not faith in Christ who had come but in Christ who was yet to come, a faith pressing towards the future of Jesus. [13] Christian faith is centred on Christ; it is the confession that Jesus is Lord and that God has raised him from the dead (cf. Rom 10:9). All the threads of the Old Testament converge on Christ; he becomes the definitive "Yes" to all the promises, the ultimate basis of our "Amen" to God (cf. 2 Cor 1:20). The history of Jesus is the complete manifestation of God s reliability. If Israel continued to recall God s great acts of love, which formed the core of its confession of faith and broadened its gaze in faith, the life of Jesus now appears as the locus of God s definitive intervention, the supreme manifestation of his love for us. The word which God speaks to us in Jesus is not simply one word among many, but his eternal Word (cf. Heb 1:1-2). God can give no greater guarantee of his love, as Saint Paul reminds us (cf. Rom 8:31-39). Christian faith is thus faith in a perfect love, in its decisive power, in its ability to transform the world and to unfold its history. "We know and believe the love that God has for us" (1 Jn 4:16). In the love of God revealed in Jesus, faith perceives the foundation on which all reality and its final destiny rest. The clearest proof of the reliability of Christ s love is to be found in his dying for our sake. If laying down one s life for one s friends is the greatest proof of love (cf. Jn 15:13), Jesus offered his own life for all, even for his enemies, to transform their hearts. This explains why the evangelists could see the hour of Christ s crucifixion as the culmination of the gaze of faith; in that hour the depth and breadth of God s love shone forth. It was then that Saint John offered his solemn testimony, as together with the Mother of Jesus he gazed upon the pierced one (cf. Jn 19:37): "He who saw this has borne witness, so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth" (Jn 19:35)..It is precisely in contemplating Jesus death that faith grows stronger and receives a dazzling light; then it is revealed as faith in Christ s steadfast love for us, a love capable of embracing death to bring us salvation. This love, which did not recoil before death in order to show its depth, is something I can believe in; Christ s total self-gift overcomes every suspicion and enables me to entrust myself to him completely. -Pope Francis, Lumen fidei, Learning and Practicing the Faith While as Catholics we are bound to believe and practice what has been revealed and commanded by God (such as the Eucharist), when it comes to our own private prayer and spiritual lives, the Church has given us many different paths to suit different personalities, temperaments, cultures, and so on. It is good to know about many of these different spiritual paths and devotions, so that we can find that which is most helpful to our own salvation, and also have devotions to recommend to others. It also helps us not to universalize our own version of Catholic spirituality, and seek to impose it on everyone. Today, we will be looking at a very simple, yet very profound prayer the Jesus Prayer, a devotion common to Eastern and Western Christianity. The practice of the Jesus Prayer is somewhat similar to praying the Rosary. The idea is simply to repeat, over and over again, these simple words adapted from the gospels: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner. Praying repetitiously like this is not what Jesus was talking about when he said When you pray, do not use vain repetition, as the pagans do, thinking that because of their many words they will be heard. We do not repeat the prayer because we believe that Jesus won t hear us unless we say it so many times; rather, we are trying to internalize the prayer, to make it a basic rhythm of our life. One way of doing this is to breathe in on Lord Jesus Christ...God and breath out on have mercy on me a sinner. You can even shorten the prayer to Lord Jesus, have mercy. The idea is to do it for a period every day, eventually getting to the point where even the act of breathing reminds you of Jesus and reminds you to ask for mercy. What is of general use, and God given, is the actual praying, the repetition of the words, without any physical endeavor - not even movements of the tongue - and which can be used systematically to achieve an inner transformation. More than any other prayer, the Jesus Prayer aims at bringing us to stand in God's presence with no other thought but the miracle of our standing there and God with us, because in the use of the Jesus Prayer there is nothing and no one except God and us. The use of the prayer is dual, it is an act of worship as is every prayer, and on the ascetical level, it is a focus that allows us to keep our attention still in the presence of God. It is a very companionable prayer, a friendly one, always at hand and very individual in spite of its monotonous repetitions. Whether in joy or in sorrow, it is, when it has become habitual, a quickening of the soul, a response to any call of God. (Met.
