2 PASTOR S LETTER/ CARTA DEL PASTOR Dear parishioners, Imagine being at the championship football game of the century and rooting for the team that is going to win the game, only to discover that the opposing team has hatched an evil plan to get our star player disqualified from the game and expelled from the sport, and then threatens the rest of the team to forfeit the game or else be jailed, and their plan works! And then our star player does not fight the accusations. It is easy to be a follower of Jesus when everything seems great, like at the triumphal procession into Jerusalem. Everyone had such hopes that Jesus would do great things for the Jewish people. But it all goes wrong. And Jesus does not seem to help. He doesn t defend himself, he doesn t fight back. But that is the awesomeness of God s plan, it focuses on a much bigger victory that no one was even thinking about, not a victory for our group, our interests, our culture, our country, but rather a victory for all of humanity, including our enemies, a victory that transcends all that is earthly and raises us up to all that is heavenly. But first, we must follow Jesus through the darkness. Blessings, Fr. 4 DISCIPLESHIP, AND EVANGELIZATION Quote of the Week In the Lord s Prayer the Our Father - we ask for daily bread, in which we see a special reference to the Eucharistic Bread, which we need to live as children of God. We also implore forgiveness for our trespasses, and to be worthy to receive forgiveness we commit ourselves to forgiving those who have offended us. And this is not easy. Forgiving people who have offended us is not easy; it is a grace that we must ask for: Lord, teach us to forgive as You have forgiven me. It is a grace. With our strength we cannot do it: to forgive is a grace of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, while it opens our hearts to God, the Our Father also disposes us to fraternal love. Finally, we ask God again to deliver us from evil that separates us from Him and divides us from our brothers. We understand well that these are very suitable requests to prepare us for Holy Communion. Indeed, what we ask in the Lord s Prayer is prolonged by the prayer of the priest who, in the name of all, pleads: Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day. And then he receives a sort of seal in the rite of peace: first of it is invoked that the gift of Christ s peace so different from the peace of the world may make the Church grow in unity and peace according to His will -Pope Francis, 3/14/2018 Learning and Living the Faith Q: What is the Paschal fast? A: We know that we fast on Good Friday, as one of our two mandatory days of fasting in Lent. But Vatican II also suggested it go further, in keeping with very ancient tradition: Nevertheless, les the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday and, where possible, prolonged throughout Holy Saturday, so that the joys of the Sunday of the resurrection may be attained with uplifted and clear mind. Holy Saturday doesn t often get much attention, but it is a day that is profound in its content. It is the Sabbath of the Lord, the day when God rested, the day when Jesus body laid dead in the tomb. There is a sense in which Holy Saturday is a day that has clear parallels with certain times and seasons in our lives, days when God seems silent, when it doesn t seem like God is acting, when it seems like God is going to let the wicked and evil win the day. On Holy Saturday, practicing that extended paschal fast, we can remember that God will vindicate His servants, but according to His mysterious will, just as Jesus mortal body lay for three days in the tomb, awaiting the great sign of God s ultimate victory for us over sin and death. This can also help us when accompanying those who might be feeling God s supposed absence or silence. Instead of explaining it away with pious platitudes, we can remember the apostles on Holy Saturday, wondering what had happened, but believing that God would prevail.
