1 POSTION DESCRIPTION St. Mark Parish th Avenue Kenosha, WI Position Title: Parish Coordinator of Faith Formation/Faith Formation Director Status: Full time/part Time, Exempt, 12 Months Reports to: Director of Administrative Services / Pastor Primary Function of this Position The Coordinator of Faith Formation has the pastor s delegated responsibility and authority to develop and implement a plan for lifelong comprehensive and systematic catechesis. This responsibility may be exercised in collaboration with parish staff members who share the responsibility for catechesis. The parish Coordinator of Faith Formation is the person who organizes and directs the program of lifelong faith formation for all parishioners under the direction of the pastor and in collaboration with the pastoral staff. (National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers serving as Parish Catechetical Leaders, USCCB, p. 16). In large parishes the Coordinator s responsibilities may be shared by more than one person. The following responsibilities of the Coordinator of Faith Formation are based on the National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers serving as Parish Catechetical Leaders. 1. Vision and Program Design Develops and implements a plan for comprehensive and systematic catechesis for children, youth and adults based on the plan for comprehensive and systematic catechesis of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Establishes long range and short term goals and outcomes for effective parish catechesis Develops Sacramental Preparation 2. Administration Implements the policies of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for catechesis Directs the parish catechetical programs from adults to children 1. Adult Catechesis and Faith Formation in its variety of forms 2. Youth Catechesis 3. Elementary grade catechesis 4. Sacramental Preparation Programs: Initiation for Children Infant Baptismal Preparation First Reconciliation and First Eucharist Youth Confirmation RCIA and Adult Confirmation Process

2 5. Catechetical programs in English and Spanish 6. Family Catechesis 7. Home Catechesis 8. Special Needs Selects appropriate catechetical materials based on the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops and Archdiocesan guidelines Provides catechetical programming in other languages as needed Evaluates effectiveness of all catechetical programs Maintains accurate records on student enrollment, attendance and sacramental preparation and submits requested data to the Office for Catechesis Ensures a pastoral approach for all in setting program structures, e.g. calendar dates, scheduling use of facilities, procedures for registration and fee collection Publishes a handbook which contains parish programs and sacramental policies and procedures Engages pastor and parish pastoral staffs in annual process of assessment, planning and evaluation Establishes a representative catechetical advisory council to ensure quality total parish catechesis Sets the environment for procedures for management of sessions and discipline Implements the guidelines for mandated reporting of legal issues according to Archdiocesan policies Assures adequate supervision of minors during the entire time they are on the parish premises for catechetical activities Implements conflict management procedures when appropriate Ensures maintenance and safety of premises according to local procedures Prepares annual budget and oversees expenditures after its approval by the pastor 3. Recruitment and Formation of Catechists and Ministers of Catechesis Recruits and screens candidates for the role of catechist Trains catechists and volunteers at all levels Provides on-going spiritual formation for catechists and volunteers at all levels through appropriate means such as retreats, evenings of prayers, workshops, conferences, courses, etc. Ensures that all their catechists are certified according to the guidelines of the Archdiocese Assists catechists in the selection of teaching aids and lesson planning Provides continued support for catechists by being present before, during and after the teaching assignments Consults with catechists, both experienced and newly recruited, to mutually assess their methodological and theological needs in order to design and implement appropriate training sessions The parish shall have an approved Coordinator of Faith Formation or share one with one or more other parishes.

Supervision of Catechists, Ministers of Catechesis, and Support Staff Develops role descriptions for catechetical personnel and support staff Provides regular evaluation for catechists at all levels and support staff Supervises ministers of catechesis such as: 1. Adult Catechesis and Faith Formation in its variety of forms 2. Youth Catechesis 3. Elementary grade catechesis 4. Sacramental Preparation Programs: Initiation for Children Infant Baptismal Preparation First Reconciliation and First Eucharist Youth Confirmation RCIA and Adult Confirmation Process 5. Catechetical programs for other languages 6. Family Catechesis 7. Home Catechesis 8. Special Needs 5. Collaboration/Communication Collaborates with the pastor, other parish ministers and appropriate committees, boards and councils 1. Develops catechetical vision 2. Establishes catechetical policy 3. Facilitates the understanding of catechetical ministry within the larger community Works with the parish staff to provide formation for adults and youth in the parish Cooperates with the principal of the Catholic School to present a united approach to total parish catechesis Communicates program information to parish community Networks with other catechetical leaders Assists in the planning of liturgical celebrations in the parish Cooperates with inter-parish planning for the development of regional programs Works with the Office for Catechesis in assessing catechetical needs Participates in Office for Catechesis deanery and vicariate meetings and other diocesan meetings as appropriate

Continuing Education and Professional Development Formation Takes responsibility for his/her own professional and spiritual development Enrolls in courses and attends workshops related to responsibilities Maintains membership in professional organizations Participates in the on-going formation opportunities for DREs provided by the Office for Catechesis 1. General Requirements Practicing Catholic who fully adheres to and models the Church s teachings in faith and morals (Cf., Code of Ethics for Catechetical Leaders, National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers p. xxv.) Active participation in parish life Appropriate mental and physical health to accomplish the tasks Registered with the Protecting God s Children program Participation in inter-cultural and anti-racism training Trained in appropriate legal issues For those new to the ministry, enrollment in the Archdiocesan formation program, Together in God s Service. In processing the candidate for approval and certification as a Coordinator of Faith Formation, the Candidate s background and studies will be evaluated against the following course of studies: Theological/Biblical Formation Scripture Old Testament Scripture New Testament Christology History of the Catholic Church Ecclesiology Sacramental Development and Theology Liturgy Christian Living / Morality Spirituality and Prayer Preparation for service as a parish catechetical leader should include advanced studies in theology, Scripture, Liturgy, catechesis and catechetical methodology, education psychology and theory, and administration, as well as practical catechetical experience with adults, youth, and children. Dioceses and parishes should actively seek to identify potential parish catechetical leaders and, with the help of Catholic colleges and universities and organizations, provide them with opportunities to develop the competence and skills necessary for effective leadership and thorough knowledge of the faith.

5 Specific Catechetical Ministry Courses Human Psychology and Faith Development Principles of Religious Education and Learning Curriculum Development Religious Education, Evangelization and Culture Basic Leadership Formation offered by the Office for Catechesis Ministerial Practicum in Religious Education Approval, Certification and Renewal of Certification 1. Approval as a Coordinator of Faith Formation is granted after: Three or more years experience in a parish or Catholic school catechetical setting as a teacher, catechist or administrator or one year in present position as catechetical leader Evaluation of the Ministerial Practicum by the Office for Catechesis Approved Coordinators of Faith Formation may be recommended for Calling as Lay Ecclesial Ministers to the Archbishop after completion of the Together in God s Service Formation process. 2. Certification as a Coordinator of Faith Formation may be granted to approved Coordinators after: Completion of the Specific Catechetical Ministry Courses and other General Requirements Demonstration of catechetical and administrative competencies based on the USCCB Standards for Certification 3. Validity: Certification is valid for four years. 4. Renewal of Certification: Requirements Participation in Leadership Formation Days and Events of the Office for Catechesis Thirty clock hours in Theological Courses and Seminars approved by the Office for Catechesis Examples o Theological Intensive o Scripture School o Courses and Seminars in the Catholic Universities and Schools of Theology and Ministry o Programs sponsored by On-Going Formation in Ministry and other Archdiocesan events Thirty clock hours in Ministerial Courses and Seminars approved by the Office for Catechesis Examples O Catholic Universities and Schools of Theology and Ministry O Office for Catechesis and Jegen Center Workshops o Chicago Catechetical Conference o Catholic Festival of Faith o Publishers Presentations o National Conferences such as NCCL, NPCD, NOCH, NACMP Submission of a record of on-going formation

6 5. Skills and Abilities A. Must have knowledge of and skill in using computers and word processing B. Must have proficient typing skills C. Must have ability to communicate verbally and in writing D. Must have basic knowledge of how the parish operates and is able to grasp how the parish office functions E. Must have ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters F. Must have ability to relate and interact with a variety of person G. Must be able to communicate fluently in English and Spanish 6.
