The leper s request of Jesus is a challenge to each of us. We can transform our lives and world in the goodness of God if we wish. Jesus compassion makes it possible for us to perform our own miracles of healing and reconciliation: to restore to health and community those considered lepers, to bring God s grace to the brokenhearted, lost, and despairing. We possess the means to transform our lives and world what is required is the desire and determination to do so: to heal the broken, restore lepers to wholeness, reconcile with those from whom we are estranged. In today s gospel, Jesus is so moved by the plight of the leper that he risks the possibility of contracting the disease (and the censure of the community), not only curing him of his illness but inviting him to rejoin his human and religious family. Jesus works his wonders not to solicit acclaim for himself but to awaken faith in God s providence, to restore God s vision of a world where humanity is united as brothers and sisters in the love of God. Jesus calls us to let our own miracles of charity, mercy, forgiveness, and justice be proof of our committed discipleship to the Gospel and our trust in God who is the real worker of wonders in our midst. 3 ST. PATRICK PARISH MISSION REDISCOVERING GOD S PLAN FOR MY LIFE If God is all powerful and all loving, why does he allow bad things to happen to good people? For that matter, if God is all good, how can there be so much evil in the world? Come join Dr. Hollcraft as he explores these questions and much more in his reflections on God s love and the extraordinary call we have to imitate this love. Also, Dr. Hollcraft will be signing his book after each night. ASH WEDNESDAY IS FEBRUARY 14. MASSES WILL BE AT 8:30 A.M., 11 A.M. 6:30 P.M. AND 8 P.M. (SPANISH) STATIONS OF THE CROSS Each Friday during Lent we offer the popular devotion of Stations of the Cross at 6 p.m. in the Church. This devotion is followed by a simple soup supper in the hall that is served by different ministries of our Church. (On March 9 there WILL be Stations of the Cross but NO soup supper.) MASS OF FAREWELL AND RECEPTION FOR BISHOP COTTA All are welcome to a Mass of Farewell for Bishop Cotta on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at 2 p.m. at St. Clare Parish in Roseville. Mass will be followed by a reception in the Morris Center. Please keep Bishop Cotta in your prayers as he prepares to take on his new appointment as Bishop of the Diocese of Stockton effective March 15, KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CRAB FEED SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17 LARGE HALL The Knights will be hosting their 25th annual crab feed featuring all-you-can-eat Dungeness crab (marinated and non-marinated), pesto pasta, salad and French bread. What does that entail? Do I necessarily have to give up something? How do I give alms? Tips on increasing your prayer life during this season of preparation. Lots of good stuff and I hope to see many of you there! UPCOMING! Knights of Columbus Crab Feed Saturday, February 17, 2018 The Knights have asked us to serve again at this year s Crab Feed. This will be a good fundraiser for us, especially those who are planning on attending the Lifeteen Steubenville Conference in San Diego this July! Plus it is always a good MUSICAL NOTES It s the time of the liturgical year to reach back to our Catholic heritage and tradition and give Latin it s pride of place in our music. We ll be praying the Mass setting in Latin during Lent. This will include the Sanctus (Holy), Mysterium Fidei (Mystery of Faith), Pater Noster (Our Father), and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). We hope you will find the value in this beautiful chant. We will begin singing in Latin on Ash Wednesday. PATRICK STEWARDSHIP There is a tremendous opportunity to help parishioners and parish ministries recognize the time, talent and treasure they have and can use for the growth of themselves, their parish, their community and the greater glory of God. Purpose: To make our parish members more aware of our many ministries. To make our ministries more aware of the good they do and the potential they provide their members and the members of our parish and community. Assumptions: Parishioners read the Sunday bulletin. The people who regularly attend Mass are good stewards. There is at least one person in our parish or community that will be led back to the Church. We will never know who that person is, but because of this person all of our work will be worthwhile. You will find that this work in parish ministries is the best use of your time, talent and treasure. Instructions to the bulletin writers: What does your ministry do? Is there an instance where you can say with certainty that you have accomplished something that was not possible without the help of the Holy Spirit? Invite to join your ministry. Format: Each month will have a different theme and the bulletin articles will be written by ministries that are appraised to that theme. Your Job: Read the articles and think about the person writing the article. This could be the first time they have done something like this. It is not easy for a lot of us. Can you see the Holy Spirit behind the writer helping the writer and the reader? Say a prayer for these people writing the articles. They need your help. 5 RCIA RITE OF SENDING Sunday, February 11, 11 a.m. What is the RCIA Rite of Sending? Across the entire world, Catholic bishops on the first Sunday of Lent will welcome those sent by the parish to gather together with their godparents and sponsors in what is known as the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. Bishop Soto will preside at the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion on February 17 at St. Clare in Roseville. The Rite of Sending offers the parish community an opportunity to acknowledge the spiritual progress the catechumens and candidates have made, express approval of their election or recognition, and send them forth to our bishop with assurance of the parish s care and support. In Sacred Scripture, the Book of Revelation makes reference to a Book of Life, in which are written the names of those who have chosen to follow the Lord Jesus and be baptized. In this Rite, the catechumens those preparing for Baptism, are invited to come forward and sign a book, which we call the Book of the Elect, as a sign of their desire to be numbered among the chosen of God. There is a great difference between the eager person who wants to read a book and the tired person who wants a book to read. G. K. Please Pray For: Peter Russell Newborn Baby Alice Rose PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 7 p.m. in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Witness to Hope, by George Weigel. The book is a biography of Pope John Paul II and is over 800 pages long. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. TRIBUNAL AND ANNULMENTS The Diocesan Tribunal has trained lay people, deacons, and priests throughout the diocese as Parish Advocates who assist and accompany people seeking an annulment. SHARE GOD S GOODNESS WITH OTHERS Recently a generous parishioner in a Sacramento parish left the residue of his estate (approximately $90,000) to various organizations that help those in need. In addition to his parish, his bequest included the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, Loaves and Fishes, Maryhouse and Catholic Social Services of Sacramento. He also left a portion of his estate to St. Patrick Academy of Sacramento for the purpose of providing tuition assistance. The generosity of this man and others helped to provide much needed assistance to many families. Making a gift for the benefit of our St. Patrick Catholic Parish and our school, Mount St. Mary Academy, after you are gone is a wonderful way to create a lasting legacy and insure the faith life you and your family receive will be here in Grass Valley for generations to come. A bequest to our parish/school through one s will or living trust is perhaps one of the easiest ways to make a lasting impact on people and organizations that mean the most to you. Charitable bequests can include anything of value in your estate such as cash, stock, jewelry, real estate, furniture, etc. It is gifts like this that help support the mission of your church and school.
