Conversely, the evil we are capable of, the hurt we inflict on others, the degrading of the world that God created also begin within our hearts when God is displaced by selfishness, anger, greed, hatred. Today s gospel challenges us to look into the depths of our hearts to realize exactly what we feel passionate about, what we truly believe, what we are called to do with this life God has given us. The meaning of faith is centered in our hearts, in that most personal of spaces where God dwells inside of us. Sometimes we become so absorbed with the formality of the rituals and texts we pray that we lose sight of the meaning of the words or what the rite is designed to express. Like the Pharisees who are obsessed with the details of ritual hand washing, we may disconnect going to church from being church, the ritual of baptism from the life of baptism, the Communion wafer from Eucharistic life. Christ calls us, in today s gospel, to worship God with the integrity of our hearts, to live the words of the prayers that have become rote in our lives, to embrace the true gospel traditions of compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. Words and rituals help us express our faith but faith begins within ourselves, in our beliefs and perspective of the world and our attitudes toward others. 3 FAMILY FAITH FORMATION AND SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Faith Formation Ministry for Families will begin on Sunday September 16. This ministry helps families learn about their faith and is for children from pre-k to 8th grade. Along with helping our children grow in their faith, we will also help those children who need to prepare for their sacraments. We will prepare them for their First Holy Communion, First Reconciliation or Confirmation. If you have a school age child who has not been baptized, this will also be where they begin their journey. High school students who want to receive their sacraments, especially confirmation, need to contact us. If you have not received a registration package in the mail, you can pick one up at the parish office or from Deacon Rick at his office in St. Cecelia's. The year will begin with an Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, September 11. For further information, please contact Deacon Rick at or at stpatsdcnrick@gmail.com. ARISE TOGETHER IN CHRIST In 1997 the pastor of the parish I came from asked Maureen and me if we would be facilitators for a small faith- sharing process sponsored by Renew International. My first reaction was no, no and no. The reasons for those no's were I don t know much about the bible so what could I share? Second, I am not very good at talking with people I hardly know. Third, I am really busy with work, my son s sports, going to classes on the weekends and, besides, our home is too small. My wife, Maureen, convinced me to try it for the first 6-week session. That decision to join was such a gift to both Maureen and me. Although I barely knew most of the people in that initial group, both Maureen and I had a wonderful experience. We developed and deepened friendships that have lasted over 20 years. One of the parishioners in the group I had normally avoided even though our children were in the same grade. But somehow in the sharing that occurred over the gospel stories we read, I began to realize what a difficult life she had. What has unfolded over the years since has been the discovery of a wonderful friend and a very deep and life-giving relationship for her, my wife and myself. The greatest gift though that I received from the Renew Process was experiencing The Living Word of Scripture. In the stories that we shared, in the sacred listening that took place in those gatherings, I experienced how our Good Lord touches our lives and can create good in the midst of our struggles. My faith began to grow and I grew more and more to trust in God. The words, Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord began to have real meaning for me. In John s Gospel, Jesus proclaims I come that they may have life, life in abundance. Arise Together in Christ is honestly a great way for us to experience Christ s presence in our own lives. On behalf of Fr. Chris and the St Patrick s and St Canice Renew Team I invite you to join us this fall. It is easy to say no. Take a chance, trust in the Goodness of the Lord and say yes. Signups will occur for the next two weeks after each of the Masses. We will begin the journey together the week of October 7. God Bless each of you. Deacon Rick WITH OUR CONDOLENCES The St. Patrick Parish community extends our condolences to the family of Angela Rabak who passed away on August 22 at the age of 88. Sunday Collection 8/26/18: $7,656 Upcoming 2nd Collection: 9/9/18 Priests' Retirement BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Over the course of the centuries, the scribes of Judaism constructed a rigid order of definitions, admonitions, principles, and laws based on the Pentateuch, summarized in Moses eloquent words to the nation of Israel in today s first reading. As a result, the ethical and moral foundation of the law was often buried under a mountain of rules and taboos. Jesus teachings refocus the canons of Israel on discerning the word of God in the sanctuary of the human heart and living one s life on that discernment. Jesus continuing challenges to the accepted order of the law and tradition further widen the gulf between Jesus and the Jewish establishment. Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 The second reading over the next five Sundays is taken from the letter traditionally attributed to James, the brother of the Lord and leader of the Jerusalem community. This brief epistle is a series of guidelines on the role of Christian morals in everyday life. Many scholars believe the letter of James was originally a sermon or series of homilies that were recorded in writing by a scribe. Today s passage from James exhorts us to be constantly open to the gift of God s word that has been planted within us and act upon that word by works of generosity and compassion. The Father willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Gospel Reading: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, A contentious debate raged in the early church as to whether or not Christians should continue to observe the ritual practices of Judaism. Jesus challenges the scribes insistence that faithfulness to ceremonial washings and other rituals constitutes complete faithfulness to the will of God. He scandalizes his hearers by proclaiming, Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; / but the things that come out from within are what defile. It is the good that one does, motivated by the spirit of God within a believer s heart, that is important in the eyes of God, not how scrupulously he or she keeps the laws and rituals mandated by tradition. May your word of life and love take root in our hearts, O God, so that these prayers we offer may become a harvest of justice and peace for all our brothers and sisters. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen. CATHOLIC LADIES RELIEF SOCIETY Meeting on October 6 at 9 a.m. All Catholic ladies welcome. Please come and join us!
5 PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. (NEW TIME) in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Open Mind, Open Heart by Thomas Keating. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. A happy marriage is a union of two good forgivers. Anonymous BAPTISM CLASS Our next Baptism classes for parents and godparents are scheduled for Saturday mornings, September 15 and 22, from 10 am-12 noon. Parents and/or godparents will need to register for both classes. There is a $25 fee which covers the class book and materials. Classes are held at St. Cecilia's Parish Center, located behind the school, above the grass field. Classes are required by the diocese and provide a wonderful opportunity for parents and godparents to meet other families in the parish. They also help parents in their understanding of our holy sacraments and what it truly means to be a practicing Catholic and a member of God's Church family. To register or for questions, please call or Trisha Ridens at or ridenssix@yahoo.com or come see me personally in the Kindergarten classroom at Mount St. Mary's. Blessings! Mrs. Ridens HISPANIC DINNER Everyone is invited to a delicious Hispanic dinner on Saturday, September 8, in the Large hall following the 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Masses. You may eat in the hall or take food home. All items are available to purchase. This is a fundraiser for Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration on December 12. SOCKS FOR THE HOMELESS NEEDED Sierra Roots reports that their sock cupboard is bare and they are asking your generosity in filling it once again. Please place your donations in the box provided in the back of the Church. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Please pray for our sick parishioners, family and friends, and those in need of healing of the body and soul. (Names will appear for one month. Call the Parish office to add, extend the time, or remove.) Please Pray For: Amelia Wilkinson, Annette Krulisky STEWARDSHIP Kiosk Outside of the Knights of Columbus, perhaps few people know of the work of the Augustine Institute which serves the formation of Catholics for the New Evangelization. Through their academic and parish programs, they seek to equip Catholics intellectually, spiritually, and pastorally to renew the Church and transform the world for Christ. The Institute has impacted countless lives in only seven years of operation. Through the Grace of God, they have distributed more than 10 million great Catholic audio presentations and other media across the globe and now work with over 7,500 parishes and individuals in 110 countries. The very good news is that we have the benefits of the Augustine program here at St. Patrick's! From its beginning in January 2004, this Knights of Columbus sponsored program has had a great response from our parishioners even though until now it has not been publicized a great deal. You probably have noticed the kiosk in the vestibule, maybe even looked at the materials it offers, but once you examine the collection more closely you will want to take greater advantage of it. The Knights feel so passionately about the information and blessings resulting from its sources, that they underwrite the current financial shortfall. The Knights also invite you to recommend CDs or books that you would like to see offered. If so, or if you desire further information, Carlos Angulo at kfccarlosa@aol.com and he will do his best to get what you need. We are truly fortunate to have this remarkable source so readily available. All who are interested in becoming stronger in their faith will find something to nourish their spiritual life at the kiosk. CULTURE OF LIFE MINISTRY Please join us for the next Ministry meeting on Thursday, September 6, at 7 p.m. in the Small Hall. We will be discussing RESPECT FOR LIFE topics. Last Saturday, August 25, nine members of the Ministry attended a Diocesan RESPECT LIFE GATHERING at St. John the Baptist Church in Folsom. It began with Mass celebrated by Bishop Soto and then followed, at 10 a.m., with a movie: "Unprotected: A Pope, The Pill and the Perils of Sexual Chaos." The point of the movie was how the sexual revolution has caused so many problems as abortion, divorce, unwanted children, and health problems for women. After lunch, Steve Patton, Diocesan Associate Director Family and Respect Life Ministries, gave a talk: "Hope for Our Dying World: Humanae Vita at 50." His main points were how to stay full of life, love and hope in a world filled with death, hatred and despair. It was a wonderful day, helping us stay committed to our goal of seeing a greater Respect for Life in our community. Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. James 1:21b
