Eucharistic Adoration Schedule Friday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. First Sunday of the month 12 Noon to 8 p.m. Third Sunday of the month 12 Noon to 5 p.m. SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHTS In inviting us to feed on his flesh and drink of his blood, Jesus invites us to embrace the life of his Father: the life in which we come to realize our ability to love and understand that love in our lives; the life that readily offers forgiveness and seeks reconciliation with all; the life that finds liberating joy in humbly serving and giving to others. In the bread he gives us to eat, we become the Body of Christ with and for one another; in his blood he gives us to drink, his life of compassion, justice, and selflessness flows within us, and we become what we have received: a sacrament of unity, peace, and reconciliation. We are sustained by many kinds of food : our engines and machines are propelled by different fuels; the many facets of our careers are financed by all forms of capital. But Jesus words about his flesh and blood as real food challenge us to consider what sustains us as human beings, as loving parents and children, as brothers and sisters of all with whom we share this good earth. In the bread he gives us to eat, Christ distinguishes the values of God from the values of the marketplace; he instructs us on how to respond to the world s challenges with a sense of justice and a spirit of generosity; he teaches us how to overcome our fears to become the people of compassion, reconciliation, and justice God created us to be. 3 CALLING ALL YOUTH!! Are you ready for a new school year? Another year of growth and maturity? I am here to help YOU grow in your Catholic faith and spirituality. This year we will meet on WEDNESDAY evenings (time to be determined) starting the Wednesday after Labor Day. Our format will also be a little different. The first and third Wednesdays will be devoted to faith formation for those who desire to delve more deeply into their faith and catechesis. I will be choosing a program from Ascension Press which I will announce next week. The second and fourth Wednesdays will be set up more in a social gathering aspect with maybe one week being a movie week or games. I am super excited for this year and all the promises it brings. I hope you choose to join and be an integral part of our group! ARISE SMALL FAITH-SHARING GROUPS What is ARISE Together in Christ? It is a parish -centered process of spiritual renewal and evangelization. The ARISE Together in Christ process within the small group applies the standard of Christ to all areas of life. It emphasizes people living in good relationship with one another, as they make concrete applications of the Gospel to their life situations. BAPTISM CLASS Our next Baptism classes for parents and godparents are scheduled for Saturday mornings, September 15 and 22, from 10 am-12 noon. Parents and/or godparents will need to register for both classes. There is a $25 fee which covers the class book and materials. Classes are held at St. Cecilia's Parish Center, located behind the school, above the grass field. Classes are required by the diocese and provide a wonderful opportunity for parents and godparents to meet other families in the parish. They also help parents in their understanding of our holy sacraments and what it truly means to be a practicing Catholic and a member of God's Church family. To register or for questions, please call or Trisha Ridens at or ridenssix@yahoo.com or come see me personally in the Kindergarten classroom at Mount St. Mary's. Blessings! Mrs. Ridens LIVINGWELL MEDICAL CLINIC Would you like to learn how women here in Nevada County are empowered to Choose Life? Donations may be sent to: NVCSS-Carr Fire 2400 Washington Avenue Redding, CA CULTURE OF LIFE "As believers in God, how can we fail to see that abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide are a terrible rejection of His gift of life and love? And as believers, how can we fail to feel the duty to surround the sick and those in distress with the warmth of our affection and support that will help them always to embrace life?" Pope John Paul BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 Today s first reading imagines God s Wisdom as a hostess giving a grand banquet to which she invites all who would forsake the conventions and ways of the world in order to discern the peace and justice of the Holy One, the Light of true wisdom. Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 A far less eloquent image of food and drink is the focus of today s second reading. Paul admonishes the Ephesians to avoid get[ting] drunk on wine, in which lies debauchery. These evil days are coming to an end, Paul warns; the time has come to understand what is the will of the Lord in all things and live accordingly. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him, says the Lord. Gospel Reading: John 6:51-58 Two dimensions of Jewish worship provide the context of today s gospel. In Jewish thought, blood was considered to be life: as blood drained away from a living being so did life itself. The Jews, therefore, considered blood sacred, as belonging to God alone. In animal sacrifices, blood was ritually drained from the carcass as belonging to God, the author of life. With this as a background, then, John s theology of the Eucharist includes Jesus exhortation to drink his blood, that is, to share in his life. To feast on Jesus is to feast on the very life of God: to consume the bread of the Eucharist is to assimilate Jesus life-giving presence in the very fiber of our being. The graphic imagery that likely turned off so many of Jesus own followers can be a turnoff even today. Jesus doesn t couch his words by claiming he speaks metaphorically. He doubles down on the flesh and blood language as he himself is the incarnation of the Word. When we consume the Eucharist, the Body and Blood, we consume Jesus himself. With gratitude and hope, we offer these prayers to you, Father of grace, trusting in your loving mercy and providence. We offer these prayers to you in the name of Jesus, the Bread of Life. Amen. Your Generosity to St. Patrick Church is Greatly Appreciated. 5 PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. (NEW TIME) in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Open Mind, Open Heart by Thomas Keating. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase. St. Rose of Lima STEWARDSHIP CORNER Greeters "Good Morning and Welcome to St. Patrick's Church!" is such a joyful start to your Sunday Mass at St. Patrick's. Greeters Ministry is a fairly new ministry at our parish that we started several years ago with many parishioners responding to the request for greeters at all of the weekend Masses. Greeters are asked to arrive for Mass about 15 minutes prior to the start of the services. Each greeter can serve once a month or more if desired. Greeters are scheduled approximately two months in advance, and they are encouraged to let their availability be known to the scheduler at that time. If a greeter is not able to participate during a month, he or she just needs to let the scheduler know. If something comes up at the last minute in a greeter's life, there is a list of folks to trade with or who will fill in when needed. We also greet for Holy Days of Obligation. Those requests are sent out to the whole group, and those who are available can respond. Being a greeter is a wonderful way to get to know the many parishioners who attend Masses at St. Patrick's and start the celebration that day with joy, a smile and a handshake. ANOINTING OF THE SICK For anyone experiencing chronic illness or preparing for medical treatment, surgery, or long-term care, please call the office, , to arrange an appointment with a priest. CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA Thank you for your generous support last week of the Collection for the Church in Latin America. It will be used to share the faith with our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean so that they in turn can share it with others. If you missed the collection, it's not too late to give! Just visit and click "How to Give" on the left. Your gift will certainly make a difference! RENO BUS TRIP The Fellowship Committee of St. Canice Church is again hosting a bus trip to the Silver Legacy in Reno on Friday, September 21. For $35 you get $10 in free slot play, $5 in food credit, and a great ride and refreshments! Full payment by August 20 to get a seat. Join us for a day of fun, food and fellowship. Call Sue Miller at to sign up. We leave St. Canice Center at 8 a.m. and return by 6 p.m. Liturgy 101 The Ambo When a church is planning to renovate its interior, eliminating the steps up to the ambo, presumably for practical reasons, is sometimes proposed. Traditionally an ambo is an elevated platform which is what the word itself implies (from the Greek word ambon, meaning a raised rim or "ledge"). The word therefore suggests a mountain and those key moments in salvation history when God spoke to his people from a high place. Ancient churches, synagogues and basilicas all had elevated platforms from which the word of God was proclaimed. Even its shape is reminiscent of a mountain. The elevated nature of the ambo is meant to remind us that God's word is no ordinary word. Though God speaks to his people using human words, the word of God comes "from above." CATHOLIC LADIES RELIEF SOCIETY #5 will be hosting their Annual Community Craft Fair on Saturday and Sunday, October 20 and 21, at St. Patrick's Hall. If you are a crafter and would like to rent a space ($35 for a 10 x 10), please contact Dolores Jones for more information, or cell If you have rented a space in the past you will be receiving an application in the next couple of weeks. SPACES GO QUICKLY. SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM Month Four Well, our little "adopted" babies now weigh about 6 oz. They are very active and mothers begin to feel their movement. They can grasp with their hands, swim and turn somersaults. Their skeleton is soft and flexible but will harden over the next months. Very exciting news is available. The parents can now find out if they are having a girl or a boy. We continue to pray for our "adopted" babies and their parents that our Lord will bless their families with all they need. God created mankind in his own image/he created them male and female Genesis 1:27 Mary, Mother of the Unborn, protect them. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. John 6:53
