The magi arrive in Jerusalem looking for the newborn king of the Jews and instead they find Herod, a power-hungry ruler. It has been said that the gospel is meant to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable." Herod is certainly not comforted by the news of a newborn king but instead is "deeply troubled." In the gospel Herod becomes the first of many who will reject Jesus' light, life, and love. The gifts of the magi reveal the nature of Jesus to us. Gold is a gift befitting a king. Frankincense was a precious incense burned at the temple as a sign of the presence of God. Myrrh is mentioned in the gospels surrounding Jesus' death. It is offered to Jesus on the cross mixed with wine, which he refuses to drink, and it is among the perfumes and spices that Nicodemus brings to prepare Jesus' body for burial. The gifts proclaim Jesus king, God, and human. From creation to angelic messages to small details in the gospel, it seems that God desires to communicate God-self to us through whatever means available. The question is, are we listening? Frank Pavone, National Director "Priests for Life," quotes St. John Paul II: "To be actively prolife is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good. It is impossible to further the common good without acknowledging and defending the right to life, upon which all the other inalienable rights of individuals are founded and from which they develop." From a booklet titled: Abolishing Abortion: How YOU Can Play a Part in Ending the Greatest Evil of Our Day. Please join us for the Culture of Life meeting on January 7 at 7 p.m. in the Small Hall. Your Generosity to St. Patrick Church is Greatly Appreciated. Sunday Collection 12/23/18: Christmas 12/25/18: Sunday Collection 12/30/18: Not Available at Press Time Upcoming 2nd Collection: 1/27/19 Mount St. Mary School BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings The Epiphany of the Lord First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 For the first time in our Advent and Christmas gospel readings the gift of Jesus is extended to the Gentiles. This is foreshadowed in Isaiah's prophecy to the people of Israel, "Nations shall walk by your light." Jesus, the light of the world, born to the Jewish people, invites everyone, Jews and Gentiles, into the light of God's love. The apostle Paul proclaims in his letter to the Ephesians, "[T]he Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, / and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel." We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. Gospel Reading: Matthew 2:1-12 In today's gospel, creation itself proclaims the birth of Jesus to the magi, the kings who are strangers in the land of Israel. They follow the star in their search for this newborn king, and when they find him not in the palace in Jerusalem but in a humble home in Bethlehem, they worship this baby and offer him kingly gifts. The magi respond with joy to the revelation of Jesus, unlike Herod who is "greatly troubled." Unable to receive the gift of Jesus or to offer Jesus the gift of himself he remains hostage to his greed and lust for power. God of creation, you call to us through the radiance of the sun and the stars to fashion our lives after that of your son Jesus, the light of the world. Hear and grant our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen. SOCKS FOR THE HOMELESS ARE NEEDED Sierra Roots reports that their sock cupboard is bare and the cold and rainy weather is here. The Sisters of Mercy Associates are asking your generosity in filling it once again. Please place your donations in the box provided at the back of the Church. Our thanks to all of you. WORLD MARRIAGE DAY Renewal of Vows On Saturday, February 9, 2019, Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at a special 11 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in which married couples will receive a special blessing and have an opportunity to renew their marital commitments. 5 PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing No Turning Back: A Witness to Mercy by Donald H. Calloway. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. The flower does not bear the root. The root bears the flower. The rose is merely evidence of the vitality of the root. Woodrow Wilson DON'T FEED THE PHISH!! The Diocese has received multiple reports from parishioners who have fallen victim to a recent internet phishing scam. The scam begins when the parishioner exchanges a series of s from an imposter who assumes the name of the local parish pastor. Unbeknownst to the recipient, he or she then replies to an address that is not the pastor's, but an imposter's address. This type of social engineered attack is commonly referred to as Phishing or CEO Fraud (the latter because the imposter uses the name of a person you trust or have a close relationship and plays on a sense of urgency). The next will ask the parishioner to buy itunes gift cards for some cause (like a cancer victim) and then to transmit the photo of the gift cards with the numbers revealed to the imposter. We ask that parishioners be extremely cautious when responding to these types of s. Please call the parish to confirm the is legitimate. The Diocese will never ask you to send gift cards by . YOUTH LEADERSHIP RETREAT The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry invites all youth ministry leaders to send your teens to the 2nd Annual Youth Leadership Retreat held at Trinity Pines Catholic Center in Colfax. This winter break retreat focuses on empowering teens to live as disciples and servant leaders, to gain practical skills to enliven youth ministry and be engaged in the life of the whole parish. The cost for 3 days is $150 which includes food, lodging and program materials. To register please visit For questions please contact Jennifer Campbell at JCampbell@scd.org or Lindsey West at LWest@scd.org. ANOINTING OF THE SICK For anyone experiencing chronic illness or preparing for medical treatment, surgery, or long-term care, please call the office, , to arrange an appointment with a priest. STEWARDSHIP CORNER New Year's Resolution Joining a New Parish or Community Ministry Join a new ministry! I don't have time! I'm too busy! I do enough already! Maybe you are doing too much? Maybe you are doing what other people want you to do? Are you just doing what you have always done! Are you doing what the Holy Spirit wants you to do? Are you using and growing your God-given talents? One Example A few days ago, two people came for Eucharistic Minister training. They came to Church to learn how to do this job. One had been thinking of becoming a Eucharistic Minister for over four years. He considered himself not worthy to administer the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Only holy people do that. The other came along and wanted to be a Eucharistic Minister also. They showed joy and awe as they went through their training learning the names of the vessels: chalice, paten, ciboria, corporal, purificator, etc. They realized that they were going to share the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ with their fellow parishioners. They would show, through their reverence and actions, that the Holy Spirit was working with and through them to help others see what is possible for them too. What an encouraging experience to observe. One more success in our Parish FREE COFFEE AND DONUT PROGRAM The Stewardship Committee has initiated a "Free Coffee and Donut" program which will be managed by a different Parish ministry on the 4th Sunday of each month starting January 27, 2019, after the 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Masses. The January program will be handled by the Parish Finance Council. In addition to free coffee and donuts, you will be able to read about the sponsoring ministry in a bulletin article each month and meet with members of the sponsoring ministry while enjoying your coffee and donuts. Also, there will be a "Welcoming Table" with information about Parish ministries and Parish registration forms. All are welcome. The Finance Council is the only Parish organization required to be established by Cannon Law. The purpose of the council is to review the financial operations of the Parish, review and approve the Annual Budget, and review and approve the annual financial statements submitted to the Diocese. While these are important responsibilities, the most important responsibility is to provide advice and recommendations to the Pastor. The current Finance Council is composed of the following members: Michael Moreland, Chair Kim Wydra Bob McDaniel Leo Granucci Emil Baldoni John Fuller Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. 1 John 3:2a
