Love is a powerful force. It is the foundation of family life. It brings people together, builds community, nurtures and sustains friendships. Love enlightens us to value life and moves us to show compassion to those who are suffering and in pain. It enables us to feed the poor, to visit the sick and the imprisoned, to shelter the homeless, and to welcome the stranger. Love gives us the courage to work for peace and justice and humbles us to offer forgiveness to others. When love is absent from our hearts, we feel empty, afraid, sad, and hopeless. When we refuse to love others, there is conflict and division, violence and war, racial discrimination and hatred, misery and poverty. When we withhold love from the poor, the sick, and the suffering, people die. When we fail to teach our children and youth how to love others, life is endangered. The risen Jesus is the living presence of God s love in the world. The universal message of the resurrection is that God s love is available to all people and that we have been given the power to love one another. There is great hope for us and the whole world. We can overcome all obstacles with love. Everyone can experience the transforming power of the resurrection and know God when we love one another. 3 FAMILY MINISTRY AND FORMATION Religious Education and Catholic Formation for Our Public School Families SCHEDULE: Faith Formation classes have ended. We will resume in September. WHAT IS FAMILY MINISTRY AND FORMATION? Family Ministry and Formation is a unique and dynamic religious education process that teaches our Catholic Faith to the children, youth and parents of our community, including preparation for the Holy Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. SUMMER FAITH CAMP 2015 Attention Parents and Grandparents Plan Now for the Best Camp Ever! This year s theme, Everest is designed to help kids, teens (and adults!) learn how to overcome obstacles with God's awesome power. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED FOR THE CONFIRMATION RETREAT We need help with hospitality and lunch for this retreat which will be held in the parish hall on May 17 from 10-2:30 p.m. We need approximately 20 people to serve. What s Involved: Morning Hospitality: Arrive by 9 a.m. to set up food: bagels, cream cheese, breakfast breads and fruit, coffee (also includes cleanup). Lunch: Arrive by 10:45 to set up for lunch. MONDAY COMMUNITY MEAL Come enjoy a Free Home-Style Dinner on Monday, May 11, at St. Patrick Hall. Dinner is served from 5 to 6 p.m. This will be the only meal in May. We will not be having a dinner on the 4th Monday because of the Memorial Day holiday. INTERFAITH FOOD MINISTRY Thank you for your generous donations to Interfaith Food Ministry. We raised over $90,000 with the Double Your Donation Campaign! May 16 is Community Shred Day at Owens Plaza from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All your old documents can be shredded. Staples and paper clips are okay. There is convenient drive-up service, and the suggested donation of $10 per box goes right to Interfaith to feed the hungry of Nevada County. All Interfaith volunteers are invited to the Volunteer Luncheon on May 19 from 11:30 until 1:00 at Twin Cities Church. Please bring a salad to share, and the rest of the lunch is provided. This is a time to celebrate all YOU do. BISCUITS AND GRAVY Ever wonder about the Knight s Breakfast? You know it s probably a lot of work. It requires setting tables, tablecloths, salt and pepper, coffee, pancake syrup, napkins, etc. Cooking menu includes ham, eggs, biscuits, gravy, pancakes, orange juice and more. There is a cooking crew that works in shifts from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A serving crew works from 7:30 a.m. to about 1 p.m. The breakfast probably makes a profit, and I know it all goes to Mount St. Mary s Academy. The cooks and servers are always there every second Sunday. They are happy and have a nice smile. Food is always hot and tastes good. Even the plates are hot. A little investigation into the background of the breakfast adds to the story. Twenty-eight years ago, May 10, 1987 to be exact, the cost of the Knight s Breakfast was $4. The 8th Grade MSM students waited on the tables. The menu was almost exactly the same. As it is now, the biscuits and gravy was the hot item. One problem was that only one person knew the biscuits and gravy recipe. It wasn t until 2001 that this gentleman passed on the recipe. In those days, you didn t walk anywhere near the dishwasher because he would squirt you. Occasionally, eggs were thrown. The crew was Mark Frederick, Ed Wydra (must have been the kid), Tom Hastor, Bill Dobbins, Herb Davis, Brian Dowling, Doug Epperson (he started the breakfast in 1983), Jim Everhart, Lou Freschi, Leo LaBrie, Joe Grecco, Alan Austaff and others. That is like the who s who of our parish. If being a good steward means doing your work to the best of your ability for the good of others, and the honor of Our Lord, then these guys are good stewards. Come this May 10; have breakfast and tell them good job. BOWLING CLASSIC FUNDRAISER Do you like to bowl? Announcing the 1 st Annual Fr. Sylvester Kwiatkowski Bowling Classic Fundraiser Then save the date: Sunday, May 17, 1-4 p.m. at Prosperity Lanes Bowling Alley. Proceeds will benefit St. Patrick, St. Canice, LivingWell and Knights of Columbus. All are invited to participate! You do not need any bowling experience to enter. Registration will be as 4-person teams and registration forms will be available soon. Cost is $55 per person which includes your donation, three games of bowling, shoes, sandwich, chips and a soda. Games 1 and 3 are No Tap - knocking down 9 pins counts as a strike. Game 2 is Crazy Eights - knocking down 8 pins on your first ball counts as a strike. Entries are Handicapped 90% to 200. No bowling book average? No Problem! Entries will be based on a 110 average for Women and 135 for Men. There will be a 50/50 Drawing and a Prize Raffle. 5 PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing The Return of the Prodigal Son, by Henri J. M. Nouwen. The book is available online or through your favorite bookstore. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BASKETBALL CAMP The 16th Annual Knights of Columbus Basketball Camp will be held June (Monday through Thursday). Boys and girls ages 6 to 14 are invited to attend. Baskets will be lowered for the first group. Camp will be held at St. Patrick Church Hall. The fee for the camp is $40 payable at registration, or check may be sent in advance to Chuck Ryan made out to Knights of Columbus. The schedule for this year is: Boys & Girls ages 6-8 8:45 10 a.m. Boys & Girls with some experience will meet 10:30 12:30 Boys & Girls with 3 or more years experience will meet 1 3 Registration on the first day (June 15) will be a half hour before each session. T-shirts and certificates will be issued at the end of camp. Light refreshments will be served during each session. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With June not far off, attention in the parish turns to the celebration of weddings. Perhaps no other area of parish life is more shaped or challenged by the expectations of our culture. An old Irish proverb, Marry in Lent and you re soon to repent, is amplified by another warning: Marry in May and rue the day! Memories of old pagan parties in May endured, and the Irish felt wedding receptions in May would be a stress on community morals. Queen Victoria did not approve of May weddings either, and her influence is still felt on family calendars, as is her daughter s introduction of the white wedding gown. Sometimes we mistake customs and curiosities for tradition. Tradition with a capital T has to do with Christ s miraculous rescue of the wedding feast at Cana, his affirmation of a man and woman pledging lifelong fidelity at the heart of a community s feast. The Church cherished that memory over time, but it took a millennium for us to think of marriage as a sacrament. Much of the rest of what we associate with weddings has to do with culture, customs, and family practices. A wise rabbi once said that tradition is not wearing your father s hat; tradition is having a child. Don t let Queen Victoria reign over your wedding plans! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. MARY S ACADEMY NEWS Pray for our students who are so excited to be receiving their First Holy Communion this week: Lexie, Logan, Chloe, Jimmy, Beau, Claire, Amelia, Niko, Isabelle, Alivia, Mary, Marina, Sarah, and Lauren. Girls Volleyball: Thank you to Denise O Neill for coaching both the 7th and 8th grade girls volleyball beams. Both teams had an undefeated season and won First Place in the Nevada County small School Division for the fourth year.
