But Jesus makes clear that no sin is too "big" to dissuade us in our search for God. Christ calls us not to allow prestige, wealth, or instant gratification to desensitize us to God's presence in our lives or diminish God's love we cherish in family and friends. Faith demands that we "let go" of whatever makes us less than what God has created us to be and that includes not only "cutting off" the sinful hand or "tearing out" the evil eye, but also letting go of our self-centeredness, prejudices, and vengeance that destroy our families and relationships. In today's gospel, Jesus exalts the work of those who teach, by the example of their lives, his Gospel of justice, reconciliation, and compassion. To show our children the meaning that our faith gives to our days, to help those alienated from God reconnect with the sacred in their lives, to reveal the love and mercy of God to those who do not know God are both the great joy and the great responsibility of our baptisms. To "teach" with conviction without judgment, by example rather than by dogma, is to transform our world one generation at a time, to establish the reign of God one stone upon another. Sunday Collection 9/23/18: $6,524 Parish Restoration Fund 9/23/18: $2,820 Upcoming 2nd Collection: 10/14/18 Mount St. Mary School BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Numbers 11:25-29 Today's first reading recalls a story from Exodus that parallels today's gospel. Moses' young assistant, Joshua, expresses his concern that Eldad and Medad, who were called to be elders but were not formally confirmed as such by Moses, were nonetheless "prophesying" among the Israelites. Moses realizes that God's spirit cannot be constricted by human limitations or expectations; he does not seek to control that spirit nor is he protective of his own prophetic gift. Rather than stop the two "unauthorized" prophets, Moses offers thanks to God for the gift he has bestowed on Israel through the two and the hope that all God's people might become "prophets" of justice and mercy. Second Reading: James 5:1-6 Today's second reading, the final in this series of readings from the letter of James, is a harsh indictment of the self-absorbed rich who have defrauded workers of their just wage, who have lived lives of luxury at the expense of the poor, and who have subjected the innocent to trial for their own gains. The writer of James echoes many prophets of old in warning that wealth of the rich will one day decay into nothing and that God will exact a heavy price from them for their exploitation of the poor. Your word, O Lord, is truth; consecrate us in the truth. Gospel Reading: Mark 9:38-43, 45, As we have seen throughout Mark's gospel, the people of Jesus' time held great stock in the existence of demons: whatever mental illness or physical infirmity they could not understand or explain was considered the presence of some "demon." It was also believed that a demon could be exorcised if one could invoke the name of a still more powerful spirit. The apostle John has tried to stop someone who seemed to be invoking Jesus' name to cast out a demon. John's concern, at first reading, appears to have some merit but recall the ongoing battle among the disciples as to who is the greatest among them. Jesus responds, therefore, by condemning the disciples' jealousy and intolerance, warning against an elitist view of discipleship that diminishes or even seeks to eliminate the good done by "outsiders." Today's gospel includes Jesus' exhortation that it is better to lose one's limb if it leads one to sin. Two notes about these final verses: The "millstone" Jesus speaks of was a large piece of stone that was turned by a pack animal to bring grain. Drowning a criminal by tying him to one of these stones was a method of execution in Rome and Palestine. Gehenna holds a grisly place in Jewish history. The young King Ahaz practiced child immolation to the "fire god" at Gehenna. In Jesus' time, Gehenna, a ravine outside Jerusalem, served as the city's refuse site. For Jews of the time, Gehenna was synonymous with our concept of hell. May our offering of these prayers, O God, inspire us to be about the work of reconciliation and justice, of mercy and peace, entrusted to us by your Son, Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.

5 MOUNT ST. MARY'S BOOK FAIR Please mark your calendars for the annual Mount St. Mary's Fall Book Fair starting on Sunday, October 7, after the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Masses in the school library and continuing until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10. Contact: Sr. Lisa Laguna D.C. at or , srllaguna@doc1633.org; OPENING DOORS MINISTRY A new season of classes begins September 23 and will continue until May. We have been in existence at St. Patrick Church since 1985 and serve both St. Patrick and St. Canice parishes. We are a faith formation and sacramental preparation program for adults and teens who have special needs. Our focus is on God's love shown to us through stories from the Bible, through the sacraments, and through the lives of the saints. Our doors are always open to both Catholics and non-catholics. We meet on Sundays, a.m., in the basement of Mount St. Mary's School. For more information, please call Helen Albano at STEWARDSHIP CORNER Stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure Stewardship involves intentional, planned and proportionate giving of our time, talent and treasure. The following further explains this concept. Intentional A deliberate decision is made to live out the Christian life in a certain way. That way is to thank God for all His blessings by returning to Him a portion of your time, talent and treasure. Planned At the beginning of every year or during the annual stewardship renewal period, each Catholic household is asked to plan and make stewardship of time and talent a part of its lifestyle and stewardship of treasure a part of its budget. Proportionate A decision is made to give a certain percentage of one's time and one's income to the church and other charities. Giving of time involves being with God in prayer and worship, sharing our love with family and friends, and volunteering our time to the church and community activities that help others promote justice. Sharing our talents arises from the fact that God has given each of us the ability and gifts to do certain things well and we are to develop those talents for the good of others. Many people decide to commit a certain number of hours each week to prayer and charitable activities. Giving of our treasure is equally as important as giving our time and talent. Since God does not hold back on any area of His giving, so we are not to hold back on any area of our giving, especially in the area of supporting our parish, diocese, Catholic schools and the community organizations. YOUR GIFT OF FAITH FOR OTHERS More and more Catholics are responding to the idea of offering a gift that perpetuates our Catholic faith. Please consider remembering our St. Patrick Parish and our school, Mount St. Mary Academy in your will or living trust. By doing so, you establish a legacy of love for others by enabling the Church to continue the expansion of our Catholic faith through our many ministries and Catholic education for our children. St. Patrick's Finance Council Please pray for our sick parishioners, family and friends, and those in need of healing of the body and soul. (Names will appear for one month. Call the Parish office to add, extend the time, or remove.) Please Pray For: Annette Krulisky, Steve Holeman The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the Lord is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. Psalm 19:8
