We must be careful about the ways we satisfy our inner hunger and thirst. God s Word is the bread that satisfies our inner longing for happiness and peace. When we read and meditate on God s Word, we nourish the mind and heart with love, compassion, forgiveness, and peace. Being connected to God s Word helps us to live in intimate relationship with God and neighbor. Do we believe that Jesus was sent from God? If so, then we too must rescind all our own agendas personal peace and affluence, which means we must reject our own world-view and instead take on that of Jesus which is reconciliation and sacrificial love. The crowds were following Jesus for what they could receive. If we do the same, then we are not truly following Jesus in faith. Thursday, August 6, is the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord which celebrates the revelation of Christ s divine glory as described in all three Synoptic Gospels. Tradition names Mt. Tabor as the site of the revelation. St. Matthew writes, His face did shine as the sun and His garments became white as snow. The purpose of the transfiguration was so that the inner circle of His disciples could gain a greater understanding of who Jesus was. Christ underwent a dramatic change in appearance in order that the disciples could behold Him in His glory. The disciples, who had only known Him in His human body, now had a greater realization of the deity of Christ, though they could not fully comprehend it. That gave them the reassurance they needed after hearing the shocking news of His coming death. We, too, should be moved to desire the divine glory that will be given to us so that, having this hope, we too can understand "that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us" (Romans 8:18). 3 FAMILY MINISTRY AND FORMATION Religious Education and Catholic Formation for Our Public School Families SCHEDULE: Faith Formation classes have ended. We will resume in September. WHAT IS FAMILY MINISTRY AND FORMATION? Family Ministry and Formation is a unique and dynamic religious education process that teaches our Catholic Faith to the children, youth and parents of our community, including preparation for the Holy Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. Call soon to get the best selection of sizes. WHAT IS MINISTRY DAYS? Ministry Days is the largest gathering of ministers, catechists and Catholic school teachers in the Diocese of Sacramento. The event is an excellent opportunity to network with others who serve our parishes and schools. The theme this year is Gathered Into One By The Holy Spirit and is taken from Eucharistic Prayer II. The work of the church is a collaborative effort. We are called to be one body as we carry out the mission of Jesus together. As we try to renew our parishes and schools as centers of hospitality, centers of prayer, centers of formation, centers of evangelization and centers of service, we must allow ourselves to be Gathered into One by the Holy Spirit. SEVEN PILLARS OF CATHOLIC SPIRITUALITY You are invited to join us as we continue to Rediscover Catholicism through Matthew Kelley s book of this title. We meet on Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11 starting on August 4 at St. Cecilia s Parish Center. There is no charge for this group, but a free-will offering is appreciated to help cover the costs. BAPTISM CLASS Our next series of Baptism classes for parents and godparents is scheduled for Saturday mornings, August 22 and 29, from noon. Parents and/or godparents will need to register for both classes. There is a $25 fee which covers the class book and materials. Classes are held at St. Cecilia s Parish Center which is located behind the school above the grass field. These classes are required by the diocese and provide a wonderful opportunity for parents and godparents to meet other families of the parish. They also help parents in their understanding of our Holy Sacraments and what it truly means to be a practicing Catholic and a member of God s Church family. Here is an opportunity to edify your faith through St. Patrick s Church Bible Study of the Gospel of St. Luke. We will be using the commentary and study guide by biblical scholar Scott Hahn, journeying through St. Luke s artistic and spiritual masterpiece. This book gives us a clear and convincing witness to the greatness of Jesus Christ from the Annunciation to the Resurrection. ANNUAL CRAFT FAIR The Catholic Ladies Relief Society is holding their Annual Community Craft Fair at St. Patrick s Large Hall on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25. This event features talented artists and crafters. If you have a creative side and would like to rent a 10 x 10 space, the cost for both days is $25. Please contact Dolores Jones for more information at or JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY A pilgrimage to Italy is planned for March 5-15, 2016, under the spiritual direction of Father Simon Twomey. The tour includes Rome, the Vatican, San Giovanni Rotondo (home of Padre Pio), Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi, Naples and more. Father will meet us in Italy. The price is $3,850 per person, double occupancy, round trip from Sacramento. Price is all inclusive except for lunch and insurance. Transitional Kindergarten: Our Transitional Kindergarten Program incorporates both religious and academic education. We have full-day and half-day options: Full Day: 8 am-3 pm; Tuition: $27/day or $405/month Half Day: 8 am-11:45 am; Tuition: $22/day or $345/month Flexible Schedule: 2 or 3-day options are available for full or half day Please contact the school office at (530) for more information about our program and to enroll your child. Kindergarten through Eighth Grade: Mount St. Mary s is enrolling students for the upcoming school year. Book Clubs: Thank you to YLI and Delbert Hedges Memorial Fund for their financial contribution to our 1 st -5 th grade book clubs in the school year. With their contribution we were able to purchase fictional and informational texts for students. Students really enjoyed their book club time and made significant academic growth. Science: As part of our science curriculum, Mount St. Mary s is implementing a programming and robotics program in order to introduce students to this field and to provide them with the skills that will enable them to pursue more advanced programs as they move into higher levels of education. The goal is to purchase enough robots so that a class can work in groups of 3-4 students per robot. This program is focused on the 4 th 8 th grade students. The initial robots used in the program are relatively simple and will serve as an introduction to robotics. Over the years, this will expand into the use of more complex robots and the use of more sophisticated programming languages. Mount St. Mary s believes that this is essential to help prepare students for the future. In order to help offset the cost of providing robotics equipment, Mount St. Mary s is seeking sponsorship donations from its members and from the community. In exchange for the sponsorships, the donor s family name or business name/ logo will be prominently displayed on one of the robots used in the program and recognition in The Union. Sponsorship Details: Sponsorships of any amount are welcome, but below are two options: Gold Sponsorship ($100): Your individual, family or group name, or your business name/logo will be prominently displayed in multiple locations on one of the robots. Silver Sponsorship ($50): Your individual, family or group name, or your business name/logo will be prominently displayed on one of the robots along with one or two others on the robot. We are also in need of new or slightly used laptop computers for the students to use in their programming class. Thank you for your consideration in helping to fund this great program for our future scientists and mathematicians. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. I will keep everyone updated on the program and student progress. Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast: Thank you to Knights of Columbus for hosting a monthly pancake breakfast for our St. Patrick s community. Mount St. Mary s appreciates being the recipient of the funds which, for the school year, was $3,800. It is always a delicious meal and a great way to catch up with friends and family. 5 THE 17TH ANNUAL FATHER PHELAN GOLF CLASSIC This is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and will be held at the Lake Wildwood Golf Course on Sunday, August 30, with a 1 p.m. Shotgun start. This year the beneficiaries will be Mount St. Mary s Academy and Living Well Medical Clinic. For those of you who do not recall Fr. Phelan, he was pastor of St. Patrick s for nearly 20 years and Chaplain of our local Knights of Columbus Council. So, it is most appropriate that our annual golf classic be named after him. For 16 years we have had a running success story with this annual fundraiser, but we can always do better. Golfers are our mainstay and the more the merrier. PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, September 8, at 7 p.m. in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Gray Matter by Dr. David I. Levy. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. The Sisters of Mercy was founded by Catherine McAuley in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland. REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD Unlike mortals, angels do not die. Nor do they need to eat or drink. Without corruptible bodies, they live eternally with God. But the psalm for today describes the manna that the Israelites ate in the desert as the bread of angels (78:25). As the first reading tells us, it seemed to them that it came down from heaven every night. Through the manna, God gave them life when death seemed imminent. Through the manna, their faith in God s eternal care for them was revived. In the case of the Israelites, they received life by eating the bread from heaven. And the life they were given allowed them to believe. In the case of the disciples of Jesus it s the other way around.
