In the figure of the gospel Jesus, we realize the essential truth of life: That we are loved by the God who created us to a degree we cannot begin to fathom; that we are loved by a God who refuses to give up or reject or destroy his beloved creation, a creation that has hardly lived up to its promise; that we are loved by a God who humbles himself to become one of us in order to make us like him, to realize that we have been created in his image by his very breath blown into our hearts. It is that very "truth" that stands right before Pilate, and he is unable to fathom it. To be a faithful disciple of Christ is to be a servant to the truth that is the complete and unconditional love of God for humankind: love that liberates and renews, that gives and sustains life and hope, that illuminates our vision and understanding to enable us to see our world in the intended design of God. 3 YOUTH There will be no Youth Group on Wednesday, November 21, because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Wednesday, November 28 Altaration Session p.m., Youth Center Wednesday, December 5 Confirmation Session 4 6-7:30 p.m., St. Cecilia Center RCIA What was the ceremony celebrated last Sunday at the 9 AM Mass? Last Sunday we celebrated two Rites of initiation for inquirers in the RCIA process: the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens (for those preparing for their Baptism) and the Rite of Welcoming (for those already baptized in another Christian tradition who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church). The following catechumens celebrated the Rite of Acceptance: Isabella Bates, Ally Berg, Traci Jagger, Jamie McDonald, Shiloh McHone, Melanie Minchinton, Gavin Nesbit, Laura Ryan, Gabriela Soto, Michelle Valencia, Dante Valleries, Holley Vallieres, Sam Walker and Teddy Wilkerson. The following candidates celebrated the Rite of Welcoming: Ed Babson, Joshua Cole, Renee Maggio, Al McBride, Chadwick Raymer, Larry Schmidt, Dan Tober, and Aaron Walker. In addition, the Hispanic Community welcomed the following candidates at the Spanish Mass: Islas Alejandro, Elizabeth Espinoza, Taurino Guerrero, Lis Hernandez, and Elio Hernandez. A very special thanks to all who helped in any way with the celebration. Please continue to pray for our catechumens and candidates as they now enter into a period of deeper formation in the RCIA process. HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Saturday, December 8, is the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is a Holy Day of Obligation. There will be a Vigil Mass on Friday, December 7, at 6:30 p.m. Holy Day Mass time on December 8 will be 8:30 a.m. Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses remain the same. ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE MONDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2018 AT 6:30 PM As Catholics we receive real grace and peace from this beautiful Sacrament of Reconciliation. Communal Reconciliation reminds us that our sin separates us from God as well as others. Let us come together this evening as a community to proclaim the Word and to be strengthened through song and prayer to share in forgiveness as a faith community. At the end of this service, we will have an opportunity for individual confession with several priests in attendance. Through this sacrament, we are preparing to receive our Lord with a renewed hope in our common prayer together this evening. Please join us! Thank you and God bless you. WHEN TO STAY HOME FROM MASS The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. Confusion sets in though at what constitutes serious reason. Am I contagious? Do I look ill? Can I sit through Mass? Can I travel safely? Would I go to work? The Catechism does not say you must be seriously ill to have just reason to miss Mass. It says that illness constitutes a serious reason that justifies missing Mass on a Sunday or holy day. Please keep your fellow parishioners in mind when you re not feeling up to par. There are elderly folks whose health is fragile and who can easily fall seriously ill from someone else s minor cold. If you think you may be contagious, please stay home. Please pray for our sick parishioners, family and friends, and those in need of healing of the body and soul. (Names will appear for one month. Call the Parish office to add, extend the time, or remove.) Please Pray For: Phil Oehler

The holiday season should be the most wonderful time of the year. However, for those struggling with food insecurity it is the most challenging time of the year. Approximately 3,400 low income families receive groceries from IFM on a regular basis. Without the Holiday Food Distribution Program most would go without Thanksgiving or Christmas meals. $20 provides groceries for a full meal, including turkey and stuffing. $40 provides both Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Checks can be made payable to IFM, 440 Henderson Street, Grass Valley, CA or donations can be made at IFM also has holiday gift cards available so you can give the gift of "Sponsoring a Family" to a family member or friend. Sunday Collection 11/18/18: (Not available at press time) Upcoming 2nd Collection: 12/2/18 Mount St. Mary School BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe First Reading: Daniel 7:13-14 The prophet Daniel has a vision of the heavenly court in which "one...coming, / on the clouds" (that is, from God) unites all nations and peoples of the earth into an eternal dominion of peace. The "Son of man" (a title Jesus will use to describe himself) that Daniel envisions is the perfect mediator between God and his people to inaugurate God's reign on earth. Second Reading: Revelation 1:5-8 The visionary John, in the opening to the book of Revelation, has a vision similar to Daniel's in the first reading, but identifies the one "coming amid the clouds" as Jesus, "the firstborn of the dead" the first to experience the resurrection. Christ's sovereignty is centered in his love for us, his freeing us from sin, and his making us into a kingdom and priests of God. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Gospel Reading: John 18:33b-37 We celebrate the kingship of Jesus with John's gospel account of what is perhaps Jesus' most humiliating moment: his appearance before Pilate. It is a strange exchange: Pilate, a government functionary with power to inflict punishment, is being encouraged ("you are not a Friend of Caesar") by the religious authorities into executing Jesus but it is the accused who dominates the meeting and takes on the role of inquisitor. In their exchange, Jesus refuses to accept Pilate's narrow understanding of power and truth, explaining to the procurator (to no avail) that Jesus "rules" a kingdom not of this world power that Pilate does not comprehend. Lord, God, may these prayers we offer and our commitment to their fulfillment lead to the realization of your kingdom in our time and place, until the coming of our Redeemer and King, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we offer these prayers. Amen. those in need. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2018 REPORT OF GRATITUDE This Thanksgiving, as we reflect with gratitude the many blessings God has given us, Catholics throughout the Diocese are invited to view the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal "Report of Gratitude." By coming together as Catholics, see how parishioners have helped social service agencies in Northern California to provide hope and help to our brothers and sisters in need. More than 253,000 individuals and families, through love and care inspired by Jesus Christ, moved closer to independence and dignity. Take a moment to see the difference you've made this year. Visit scd.org/annual-catholic -appeal.

5 PARISH BOOK CLUB GATHERING All parishioners are invited to a meeting of the St. Patrick and St. Canice Book Club on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. (NEW TIME) in the Angel s Nest. The Angel s Nest is located at the back of St. Patrick s Church and can be reached by walking along the outside right wall of the Church. The meeting will last about an hour and a half. We will be discussing Mary, Who She is and Why She Matters by Robert Stackpole, STD. The book is available on line or through your favorite book store. The discussion will be led by Michael Moreland. In addition to stimulating conversation, coffee, tea and cookies will be provided. What is gladness without gratitude, and where is gratitude without a God? Coventry Patmore STEWARDSHIP CORNER Some TIME-ly Ideas... Say Grace before each meal (The traditional Catholic Grace takes 5-7 seconds!) Out of courtesy and love, make a habit of being on time for Church, appointments, etc. Read Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. Do any of its verses connect with your life right now? Read 1 Peter 4:7-11 in which he tells us that "as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace." Remember 1 Corinthians 15-58, "Keep busy always in your work for the Lord, since you know that nothing you do in the Lord's service is ever useless." Consider the following comment from an unknown source: "Christ does not want to be our helper; He wants to be our life. He does not want us to work for Him; he wants us to let Him do His work through us. An utterly new kind of service will be ours as we let Christ serve others through us." YOUR GIFT OF FAITH FOR OTHERS Each generation of Catholics is given an important mission: how do we pass on the faith to the next generation? Foremost is evangelizing knowing our faith well and sharing it with family and others. As important, is the careful and prayerful sharing of God-given resources. One of these resources-our assets-includes the things we have accumulated over our lifetime. As Catholics we believe that our assets and our ability to acquire them are gifts from a loving generous God. We have a responsibility to use these gifts wisely and prudently as well as share them with others our family certainly, but also with those institutions devoted to spreading God's reign on earth. Please consider remembering our St. Patrick Parish and our school, Mount St. Mary Academy, in your will or living trust. By doing so, you establish a legacy of love for others by enabling the parish to continue the expansion of our Catholic faith through our many ministries and Catholic education for our children. These gifts ensure that our lives touch the lives of those that come after us, thereby perpetuating the faith for generations to come. THE FOUR WEEKS OF ADVENT The Advent Wreath traditionally holds four candles which are lit, one at a time, on each of the four Sundays of the Advent season. Each candle represents 1,000 years. Added together, the four candles symbolize the 4,000 years that humanity waited for the world s Savior from Adam and Eve to Jesus, whose birth was foretold in the Old Testament. Violet is a liturgical color that is used to signify a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice and is used during Advent and Lent. Advent is the season where we spiritually wait in our darkness with hopeful expectation for your promised redemption, just as the whole world did before Christ s birth, and just as the whole world does now as we eagerly await his promised return. The 1 st Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the Prophet s Candle reminding us that Jesus is coming. The 2 nd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith with the Bethlehem Candle reminding us of Mary and Joseph s journey to Bethlehem. The 3rd Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday. This symbolizes Joy with the Shepherd s Candle reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. The 4th Sunday of Advent, symbolizes Peace with the Angel s Candle reminding us of the message of the angels: Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men. Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth Revelation 1:5
