1 January 21, 2015 The Mosaic Volume 29 Issue 2 Dear Sisters and Brothers: From the Pastor This is my last From the Pastor. Anything I write after this will be From David. Here is a confession I must make. I am struggling with one (at least one!) of the Seven Deadly Sins. Envy has recently become a significant problem for me. It started some time shortly after you received my letter of resignation and retirement. I m not having second thoughts about retiring, and I knew in advance that saying good-bye would be an ongoing pain. But I didn t expect envy! I am seriously envious of your next Senior Minister, whoever he or she may be. That person will be blessed beyond his or her imagination, despite being excited about coming to Royal Lane in the first place. As time passes, he or she will feel more and more like the luckiest pastor alive. She or he will wonder why there are not more churches like Royal Lane, with members like you. I am full of wonderful envy of all the joys that will come to your next Senior Minister, and I will pray for whoever that is and for all of you every day. Being at Royal Lane has been a growth experience for me. One thing I know now better than ever is that all of life, from the very good to the very bad, from the joyful to the painful, is sacred and filled with opportunities to become who I really am. I love the words of John Keats: Call the world if you please The Vale of Soul-making. Then you will find out the use of the world. Our own Garey Wisdom, who is the Training and OD Specialist for the Dallas Fed, will be our docent/tour leader for this informative and enjoyable outing. See: website for more information. Following the bank tour we ll walk around the corner for lunch at Sammy s B-B-Q, another Dallas institution and one which Garey recommends highly. We hope for a good turnout for this event and we must give the Fed a count of how many will be participating. So please let Bruce Luedke (phone: , or luedkeb@aol.com) know by TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, if you plan to go. Free parking is available at the Fed so talk amongst yourselves about carpooling/ride sharing and even public transportation. Talk to Bruce or Garey if you have any questions or concerns and PLEASE mind the deadline (February 3) for responding with your intentions. Let s do this!

3 February Preaching Schedule at RLBC February 8 Vanessa Vaughter / Martha Stearns Marshall Day of Preaching Vanessa Vaughter will be Royal Lane s guest preacher on February 8, for the Martha Stearns Marshall Day of Preaching. The MSM Day of Preaching is named for Martha Stearns Marshall, an eighteenth-century Baptist woman preacher. The event is both a celebration of women in the pulpit and an opportunity to educate congregations about women in ministry. Vanessa Vaughter is the Education Program Manager for Hope s Door, a non-profit helping families affected by domestic violence. She received her B.A. from The University of Texas, Austin, a Masters in Divinity from Duke University in 1997 and a Masters in Social Work from The University of Texas, Arlington in After serving as a pastor in the United Methodist Church, Vanessa spent 10 years with the Sprint Corporation, the majority of that time as a Certification Trainer, working both domestically and internationally. Upon completion of her Masters in Social Work, Vanessa became the Teen Dating Violence Prevention Coordinator at Hope s Door. She has spoken to over 10,000 adults and teens about healthy relationships, preventing dating violence and how to respond to domestic violence. As Education Program Manager, Vanessa has expanded the agency s reach to include training management of corporations, hospitals and churches to recognize and respond in helpful ways to situations of dating and domestic violence, while maintaining an individual counseling case load, largely of teen survivors. Vanessa has appeared on radio, television and in print, as well as preaching spreading the message of hope that our women and men no longer need be bound by the chains of domestic violence. Vanessa is a member of the Collin County Council on Family Violence, National Association of Social Workers, and the United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Rev. Woody Weilage, attend St. James CME Church and live in their dream home, a 1915 Arts and Crafts, located just two blocks from Historic McKinney Square. Vanessa is the proud Momessa of Jordan Weilage. February 15 Terry York Terry W. York is Professor of Christian Ministry and Church Music at Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary. He joined the faculty in 1998 after serving three years as the Associate Pastor of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from California Baptist University and his Master of Church Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been Minister of Music in churches in California and Arizona. From he served at the Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources) in Nashville, Tennessee. His duties there included being the Project Coordinator for The Baptist Hymnal, In all, Dr. York has published more than 40 hymns including the well-known Worthy of Worship. His hymn Give Us Courage was commissioned by the Truett Seminary administration and approved by the Truett Seminary faculty as the official Seminary Hymn in In addition to his hymns, Dr. York has published more than 60 choral anthem texts set by composers such as Bob Burroughs, David Danner, Tom Fettke, Benjamin Harlan, Mary McDonald, Earlene Rentz, David Schwoebel, Joseph Martin, Vicki Hancock Wright, and Taylor Scott Davis. The Worship Matrix, co-authored with David Bolin (Celebrating Grace, Inc., 2010), is the fourth of Dr. York's books to have been translated into Chinese. In June 2008 it was his privilege to be one of two featured plenary speakers at The World Association of Chinese Church Musicians' biannual conference which met in Kuching, Malaysia. In June 2009, the Baptist Church Music Conference, meeting in Nashville, TN, gave Dr. York the W. Hines Sims Award, its most prestigious recognition. Dr. York and his wife, Janna, have two children and three grandchildren. February 22 Jason Smith Jason Smith serves as a Congregational Engagement Specialist with the Alliance of Baptists, working collaboratively with partner congregations and Alliance leadership on development strategy and congregational relations. Previously, he served as Director of Youth and Ministry Assistant at Calvary Baptist Church, Washington, DC. While in DC, he studied at Wesley Theological Seminary ( 14, M. Div.), where he studied urban ministry. He was ordained at Calvary Baptist Church in June, Jason grew up in Costa Rica where his parents served as Baptist missionaries, and continues to be involved in special projects collaborating with communities of faith in Latin America; in 2012, he co-led an intercultural immersion and housing construction project in El Salvador with Rev. Edgar Palacios and Iglesia Bautista Shalom and has served as an Instructor with churches in the Kuna Yala province of Panama as a part of a theological education project of the Latino Network of Virginia Baptists. Jason and his wife Myra live in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, where Myra is an Assistant Professor of History at their alma mater, Ouachita Baptist University.
