1 Royal Lane Baptist Church Diverse People United in Christ THE MOSAIC August 3, 2011 Volume 25 Issue 15 From the Pastor One of my favorite preachers was the late Ernest Campbell, who should have lived forever! He insisted that a preacher should keep a notebook. He advocated a pocket-sized, non-spiral notebook. He said preachers are like cement-mixers, they work on the way to the job. I have filled up two of them over the years, and still refer to them often. I don t know how Ernie would feel about electronic devices, but they make the practice even easier. I am a scavenger of notes and quotes, believing you can never have too many. Some quotations are a little long, or too richly packed, to use in a sermon. Therefore, here is my keeper quotation for the summer of Keep it where you won t forget it, and read it often. It is from Reinhold Niebuhr s The Irony of American History. Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in a lifetime, therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we are saved by love. David 2011 Camp Pictures! The next issues of The Mosaic are scheduled for August 17 and September 7, The deadline for submissions will be 5:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the date of publication.

3 August Adult Sunday School Classes August 7 & 14 Room 201 The Christian Agnostic will be taught by Larry Brown Class Description: In 1965 Leslie D. Weatherhead wrote a book by this title and, unlike many theologians, stated what he believed was essential to Christianity and what was not. Larry will compare and contrast this book to a recent book by Michael Krasny, Spiritual Envy: An Agnostic s Quest. Using these two books and adding class discussion we will determine whether a dose of agnosticism enhances our Christian journey. Larry was born in 1946 and is still above ground searching, like Guy Noire on Prairie Home Companion, for answers to life s persistent questions. Larry has been a member of Royal Lane for many years. August 14, 21, & 28 Room 206 Philippians (an Overview) will be taught by Bill Prickett Class Description: It s just four chapters. A letter written to a church full of people he dearly loved. The book of Philippians teaches simple, uncomplicated truths which can be easily understood. But it also contains profound theological concepts that intrigue the most ardent Biblical scholars. There are several wonderful themes running throughout the book, but the overall message is joy, even in the midst of the most dire circumstance. This message is taught both in the principles of the book as well as personified in the writer of the letter. Join for an overview of this uplifting book. Bill Prickett spent 25+ years in the ministry, including 15 years as a pastor. He has a bachelor's degree in applied theology and communications, as well as graduate training in advanced Biblical studies and Biblical languages four years of Greek and six years of Hebrew. He incorporates his ministerial experiences into his fiction writing, and speaks at churches and religious conferences throughout the country. Bill works in public relations and communications. He and his partner joined Royal Lane in August 21 & 28 Room 201 Children's Spirituality and Godly Play taught by Chaplain Ryan Campbell Class Description: This class will provide insight into theory and process of spiritual growth in children and how adults can nurture a child's spiritual growth. It will include experience of a Godly Play session. Ryan received a B.A. in Philosophy from Austin College in Sherman, Texas and a Master of Theological Studies from the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. He completed his Clinical Pastoral Education training at Children s Medical Center and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, both in Dallas, Texas. He is a board certified Chaplain and member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. He served for two years as a staff chaplain at UT Southwestern University Hospitals-St. Paul and Zale-Lipshy and is currently on staff at Children s Medical Center Dallas developing the Center for the Spirituality of Children in addition to his clinical assignments in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Neurology. He has completed a graduate certificate in the Spiritual Guidance of Children at General Theological Seminary in New York, New York, studying under the Rev. Dr. Jerome Berryman. He is currently working on adapting a theoretical framework for the Spirituality of Children and the use of Godly Play to the pediatric clinical setting. Ryan lives in Dallas with his wife Molly and 4 year old son Evan. He also shares his living space with his dog Persephone and his blue and red Beta fish, Yellow. August 21 & 28 Room 205 The Sermon on the Mount will be taught by Paul Leon Class Description: Paul will be sharing from Matthew 5, 6, & 7. The aim is to see the relative value of the Beatitudes and our relationship with our fellow man while getting the most out each day in light of the way we are instructed to live in Chapter 7. Paul joined the church July of 2010, formerly from 1st Baptist Dallas. He became a Christian in his youth and is a Practicing Podiatrist. Married at the time, he moved in 1970 from Chicago to Dallas with his family. He has one daughter, Kimberly Mills, and an adopted son, Christopher Marriott.
