1 August 5, 2015 The Mosaic Volume 29 Issue 15 Bridges, Communities, & Harvest Hands Our mission trip with Cornerstone Baptist Church was a terrific success! More than forty Royal Laners pitched in over the course of the week. Some worked full-time. Some worked part-time. Some brought food. Some came down in the evenings just to share a meal and to fellowship. I never feel more connected to this body of Christ than when we are on mission trip together. Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible. Our theme this year was Building Bridges & Connecting Communities with Harvest Hands. Each evening during our worship time together, we reflected on what that means. What does it look like to build a bridge from our relatively affluent corner of Dallas to the decidedly disadvantaged community of South Dallas? How do we maintain an ongoing connection to this community of faith nestled a mere fifteen minute drive from the corner of Royal & Hillcrest? What are harvest hands, and how would Christ have us use them to continue to make life better for these neighbors of ours from whom we are separated, not by a fence, but by a small stretch of highway? Our quote for the week was taken from the July 2015 edition of Baptist today. Jim Somerville, pastor of First Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia, says this: There aren t a lot of lepers to cleanse in 21st Century America, but there are people who have been excluded from our communities and pushed to the margins of society. There aren t a lot of demons to cast out in modern times, but there are people who struggle with depression or anxiety or voices of psychosis who need to be loved and understood. I haven t raised any dead people lately, but I have heard people talk about having hope again for the first time in years. And every time we take the time to listen or put our arm around someone s shoulder or offer to say a prayer, we are doing the work of healing. Each night, this was our meditative call to worship: Harvest Hands bridging divisions among neighbors sharing light with the lonely sheltering the homeless feeding the hungry These are our Harvest Hands! On Wednesday night, August 12th, you will be able to hear some of the stories from our week at Cornerstone. Stories about creating a new space for a family to call home. Stories about loving children and letting them know that God loves them too. Stories about connecting with some of our older neighbors over a simple game of dominoes. In short... using our harvest hands. 3 Transition Team Update Following the commissioning of our transition team by the congregation in Sunday worship on July 26th, we had a very productive and spiritually meaningful retreat facilitated by our Interim Pastor, Layne Smith, which lasted till about 7:00 p.m. While our bodies were tired and our minds a bit foggy, we left the retreat buoyed by God s presence and with a deeper appreciation for each other and for the unique faith journeys that led each of us to Royal Lane. A good portion of our afternoon was devoted to initial brainstorming about process issues and congregational events, but the majority of our time was spent reflecting on scripture and praying for each other, and for you, as we take these first steps together on a year-long journey of intentional introspection and conversation centered on discerning God s will for RLBC. We have earmarked Sunday, September 13th, for our first congregational lunch/afternoon event focused on the rich Heritage of RLBC. More details will be forthcoming, but for now, we ask that you reserve this date and make it one of your highest priorities to attend and participate fully. It will not last till 7:00 p.m. (we promise) If you have questions, concerns, or ideas that you would like to share with the transition team, please reach out to any member. We are here to listen and to help bring form to our collective discovery. Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.
