2 Lent and Holy Week Worship Schedule Wednesday Night Worship, March 23 Special Holy Week Service 6:30 p.m.... Sanctuary Sunday School and Nursery available. Maundy Thursday, March noon... Sanctuary Nursery available. 7 p.m.... Sanctuary Do this in remembrance of me. We commemorate the Last Supper a Passover meal that Jesus shared with his disciples the night before his death. The service includes beautiful music by New Dimension Singers and Handbells. Sunday School and Nursery available. Good Friday, March 25 Good Friday at The Village 10:30 a.m.... St. Andrew s Village A special worship service for the residents of St. Andrew s Village and all who wish to share in this special service. Experiential Worship: Journey to the Cross and Experience the Passion 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m.... begins outside the Great Hall Come join us for this powerful journey to the cross from Passover to the garden tomb. You will experience the Jerusalem Marketplace, wave Palm Sunday branches, share in the Passover Meal, pray in the Garden of Gethsemane, chant crucify in Pilate s Hall, follow Jesus to Golgotha, weep with Mary at the cross, and sing Were You There at the tomb. This will be a meaning-filled service for all ages. Bring your strollers, wagons, wheelchairs, and walking shoes and step into the powerful story of Holy Week. It s a wonderful way to prepare for the glorious Easter celebration. Good Friday Passion Service: Obedient Unto Death 7 p.m.... Sanctuary Come to worship in the sacred tradition of Good Friday focusing on the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and our living response to the cross through the reverent and musical heritage of Bach, Holst, Clausen and Barber. The service is led by the St. Andrew s Choir and Orchestra. Holy Week Prayer Vigil Begins Maundy Thursday, March 24, 8 p.m. and ends Saturday, March 26, 8 a.m. Sanctuary Prayer Chapel Jesus asks his disciples to watch and pray. Take half an hour or more during Holy Week to watch and pray with Jesus. A special space will be devoted to this Prayer Vigil in the Prayer Chapel with Bibles and resources available to guide your prayer. During the Prayer Vigil we will have someone praying every hour, day and night from the end of our Maundy Thursday evening worship service until Saturday morning. Families and groups can sign up together (more than one person can be praying during a time slot). Please go to saintandrews.org and hit the volunteer button, or contact Carole Lundell at clundell@saintandrews.org or Habitat for Humanity Exciting news! 2016 is the 25th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity at St. Andrew's. If you ever considered putting your faith into action by serving in this local mission, this is the year to do it. We estimate that building will start in the middle of May and continue for five weeks, skipping the week of Memorial day. Beginning April 9, Habitat offering envelopes will be placed in the pews to collect donations to raise $30,000 to purchase materials we will use when building. Habitat weekend is April 9/10 with last summer's Habitat family, Mimi Birhanu and children, as our guests on Sunday. Registration for volunteers to build, bring food and site host will begin at the church and continue through April. Dave Engh My Neighbor is Muslim: Exploring the Muslim Faith April 17, 24, May 1 & 8 During this four-week series we will learn about the basic foundations of Islam and the Muslim faith. We will have exceptionally qualified speakers cover such topics as the Five Pillars of Islam, the Qur an (Koran), and what it is like to live here as a Muslim. We will hear personal stories from both a male and female Muslim and have the opportunity to ask questions and be in dialogue with a local Imam (religious leader). It will be extremely educational and a wonderful opportunity to learn how to love our neighbor. Thoughts On Discipleship As part of our continuing focus on discipleship, Pastor John Straiton will be sending out a weekly message called, "Thoughts on Discipleship." Those who participated in the "Through the Bible in a Year" study in 2014 and the Thoughts on Prayer in 2015 will automatically receive this . He is not here; he is risen! During Lent we prepare our hearts for Easter and the Good News. Kids will hear The Parable of the Talents and learn about the gifts God has given each one of us. On Palm Sunday kids will participate in a parade through the worship service waving palm branches and shouting "Hosanna!" Family Ministry Opportunities Parents Night Out: Open to 12 months through completed grade 5 Friday, April 8; 5-8 p.m.; Sanctuary; 12 months completed grade 5, $10/child or $25/family. Contact Kim Lewin at Good Friday Intergenerational Worship Experience: Friday, March 25; 11 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. Join in the journey as Jesus and his disciples travel through Holy Week. Experience the marketplace in Jerusalem (open 30 minutes prior to worship start time), taste and see the Passover meal, pray with Jesus in the garden, be among the crowds in Pilot s court, hear Mary s story at the cross and visit the tomb where Jesus is buried. Bring the whole family for this incredible journey. Volunteer to be a part of the action. Family Light: Friday, April 29-Sunday, May 1 Kalahari Family Retreat. Cost: $20 retreat fee per person, plus lodging for your family. Music Ministry Upcoming Music at St. Andrew s Saturday, April 9, 2016, 7 p.m. Luther College Nordic Choir Housing needed on Friday, April 8, for Luther College Nordic Choir. They will rehearse at St. Andrew s. You pick them up at the Sanctuary, bring them to your home overnight and return to the church at 9 a.m. on Saturday. 5 Sunday Morning Speaker Series Sundays, 10:45 a.m.-noon in the Great Hall Dr. Jeannette Bakke: Exploring Spiritual Direction April 3 Bakke is a spiritual director, retired seminary professor and author of Holy Invitation, Exploring Spiritual Direction. What is Spiritual Direction? Spiritual Direction conversations offer a welcoming space to listen for God s presence with someone who joins your prayer and discernment. As Bakke guides our exploration of the gifts and possibilities, we will have an opportunity to experience spiritual direction. Middle and High School Youth Quake Zone April 1-3; cost $229 This year we are heading to Wisconsin Dells for a weekend to revamp and recharge! This is for anyone grades There will be great speakers, wonderful music, powerful worships, fun games and, of course, a water park! It is not too late to sign up but do so soon. Questions? The YSC will offer space for homework, gym time, organized games, outdoor games (when weather allows), and a movie room as options for relaxing or burning off some energy after the school day. All activities are free of charge. Pizza, salad, beverages, and snacks are available for purchase in the Community Room. High School High School Relevance Night #supsrel Tuesdays, 2:30-6 p.m. Youth & Sports Center High school is awesome. It s also a time in our lives when we re under constant pressure to get into a good college, have lots of friends, look great, excel in sports or music, get lots of likes on Twitter and have a part-time job while maintaining great grades and keeping everyone around us happy. In a world where the weight teenagers have to carry gets heavier and heavier, St. Andrew s has created High School Relevance Night a place for our students to be themselves and talk about real life (while playing fun games and getting to know one another, of course). Join us on Tuesdays for a time of fellowship, fun, faith, and (if you bring money) food! The Early Bird Breakfast Clubs Thursdays, when school is in session: Mahtomedi Coffee Cottage (6:45-7:30 a.m.) Thursdays, when school is in session: Stillwater Starbucks (6:30-7:30 a.m.) Fridays, when school is in session: White Bear Lake Caribou, 4th & 61, (6:30-7:15 a.m.) Meet with other high school youth to begin your day in the WORD. Come for coffee, breakfast, and good conversations. All high school youth welcome! Worship Band Practice Sundays, 6-7 p.m.. through end of May in the Youth & Sports Center If you like to praise Jesus through song and dance to music, come be a part of this dynamic ministry opportunity. Christian Environmentalism Mondays in April, 7 p.m., Sanctuary Room 202 We will be discussing the book, "An Introduction to Christian Environmentalism" by Kate Blanchard (daughter of our congregation) and Kevin O Brien. The authors work to find a common ground for discussion between those who think environmentalism has no place in the church or claim that our involvement in climate change is misguided and those for whom the environment is all there is to consider. It will not only be very educational, it will lead to some wonderful discussion on a timely and pertinent topic. Come and participate! Paul s approach will focus on how independent, market-driven solutions to climate problems are all around us, and how we can have both a strong economy and a livable climate. As the owner of five businesses, Paul understands how a changing climate provides opportunities for companies to develop creative solutions. Cosponsored by Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light, a short discussion at the end will explore how communities of faith can work together to care for the earth that God created. Women s Ministry Paint with Cheerful HeARTs Social Painting with no experience necessary! Friday, April 15, Social hour begins 5:15 p.m. Class starts at 5:45 p.m., Great Hall Room 6 Artist Sandy Danus, owner of Cheerful HeARTs, will guide you with simple instructions and basic painting techniques. Everything included to come away with your own masterpiece, even if you have never painted before. Bring a light snack to share, meet new friends and come see what the painting frenzy is all about. 8 Men s Ministry Annual Men s Banquet Monday, April 25; 6:30-9 p.m.; Great Hall The Annual Men s Banquet will be held on Monday, April 25, from 6:30-9 p.m. in the Great Hall. Our guest speaker will be Pastor Jeff O Grady, pastor of San Marino Presbyterian Church in San Marino, California. Jeff is the former Dean of Students at Princeton Theological Seminary and is a long-time personal friend of Pastor Straiton. Our entertainment for the evening will be Billy McLaughlin. Tickets will go on sale soon at a cost of $30 per person. Couples Couples Book Study Playing TAG Thursdays, April 7-28, May 5, 13; 6:45-8 p.m. Great Hall. Cost: $15 for the book Register online, childcare provided Tag is a game we played as kids, and it is a game we play in many of our relationships. Making the other one IT so we are not is always the object. Come and join other couples as we learn how to communicate better with each other, laugh alongside each other, and meet other couples from St. Andrew s. This class is limited to seven couples. Volunteer at Hope for the Journey Home Emergency Family Shelter Volunteers that help at our emergency family shelter, at Guardian Angels church, have experienced firsthand the support and friendship we provide to those families we are helping through the Community Resource Center. Now is your chance! St. Andrew s members have the opportunity to volunteer the week of April 10-16, Volunteer shifts are available in the afternoon (2:45 5:15 p.m.), dinner (5 8:15 p.m.), and overnight (8 p.m. 9:15 a.m.). This is a great volunteer opportunity for families to serve together, NHS students, couples, or individuals! All volunteers at HJH are required to have completed a background check and a Safe Church training prior to volunteering. If you have previously volunteered at HJH, and already completed the requirements, please go to to sign up. Community Meal Craft Leaders Do you enjoy working with kids? Do you consider yourself crafty?
