More About Today s Preacher, Dr. Barbara Lundblad We welcome internationally acclaimed speaker Dr. Barbara Lundblad as guest preacher at all worship services this weekend. One of our key initiatives at St. Andrew s is to promote leadership, and key to that strategy is to strengthen preaching both here and throughout the ELCA, stated St. Andrew s Lead Pastor Mike Carlson. We believe that Christ meets people in a very unique way through worship, and that when great preaching effectively articulates the Gospel of Jesus Christ, lives are changed and set free. Dr. Lundblad is Professor of Preaching at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and is highly regarded around the world for her teaching, speaking and preaching. January February Preaching Series: why church? When so much is competing for our time, why church? Come and not only discover but experience the power of being a part of a worshiping community... a community that shapes our identity, inspires us, walks with us through the ups and downs of life and gives us purpose and mission. Come discover the joy of community through preaching and music that transforms lives with the healing power of Christ s love. We will be looking at the parables and how they have wisdom for us today in our call to experience, to bring, and to be the kingdom of heaven on earth. Connection Card Every One, Every Week In 2015, according to the Connection Cards we had 533 visitors, with fewer than 10 percent becoming members that same year. In 2016 we currently have almost 20 percent of our visitors becoming members. Please continue to fill out your Connection Cards to help us track our visitors and members of our community.

2 Sunday Morning Adult Education Series Sundays, 10:45-11:45 a.m., Great Hall Jan. 8: Dr. Michael Chan From Seminary Professor to Sailor Dr. Chan will talk about his decision to leave his position as Associate Professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary to join the intelligence branch of the United States Navy. In his words, The freedom of the Gospel remains my delight, the care of souls my life s task, and the theology of the cross my north star; but the context in which these are expressed will change dramatically, as I transition from the academy to the barracks. Jan. 22: Deacon Erin Morris Reformation 500 Lutheran and Catholic Dialog Morris will highlight the conversation that has been happening between the Lutherans and Catholics in the past 500 years. Hear how these two denominations differ as well as how they are coming together to be the Body of Christ. This material is part of her continued Seminary education and comes from a class she attended this month. Jan. 29: Mary Jane Haemig Luther: His Life and Times A basic introduction to Luther s life and the era in which he lived. Haemig is Professor of Church History at Luther Seminary. Feb. 5: Mary Jane Haemig Luther s Convictions about God -- and Us Martin Luther started a reformation that upended the European world and created consequences lasting to today. What was so revolutionary about what he did? This session will explore Luther s thinking about God, God s relationship to humans, and how this impacts life in society. Feb. 12: Pastor Mike Carlson 2 Introducing Heidi Lender, St. Andrew s Resource Counselor St. Andrew s is thrilled to announce the hiring of Heidi Lender, Resource Counselor. The resource counselor is an outgrowth of the strategic initiative that the Church Council set forth last spring that states: We will provide resources for those broken by life s circumstances. This is a half-time position that will help members of St. Andrew s and the community find appropriate counseling resources. Heidi will also be providing periodic educational opportunities about mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and coping with stress. Please join us in welcoming Heidi to the staff! Couples Marriage Enrichment Retreat Naniboujou Lodge in Grand Marais, MN Jan , 2017 It is always good to get away and focus on that all-important marriage relationship. Getting up and down off the floor can be difficult for many reasons. This Yogadevotion class incorporates poses using a chair. Practicing in the Presence/Yin Yoga Mondays, 5:15-6:15 p.m. in Great Hall Yin Meditation incorporates gentle movements and listening for the voice of God. Practicing in the Presence Mondays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Great Hall This multi-level class is open to all skill levels. Understanding Early Episode Psychosis Tuesday, Jan. 24, 6:30-8:30, Sanctuary Room 201 This class will help family members and loved ones of a person who has experienced psychosis understand symptoms, causes and treatments. Participants will learn how to advocate for and how to help a young person get back to work, school and achieve recovery. The Men s Prayer Group meets every Monday from 7-8 p.m. in the Sanctuary Atrium Lounge. These are valuable ways to connect with Christ and other men. Even if you missed the fall classes, join us in January and we ll get you caught up. Written and taught by Pastor John Straiton, READ is an exciting overview of the Old Testament. 4 Family and Children Ministry DOCK Children s Education DOCK (Disciples of Christ Kids) is our children s education program. Children can sign up and join anytime. Classes are available during worship services on Saturdays and Sundays, and Wednesday evenings during Confirmation. We require registration for each child as well as a new registration each school year. January DOCK Theme: Journey with Jesus Follow Jesus on his journeys and learn how Jesus is with us everywhere we go. Memory Verse: The Lord is with me I will not be afraid. Psalm 118:6. Young Families Family Frolics: Mondays, 9-11 a.m. (except Jan. 16 due to holidays) Preschool children and parents are invited to run, jump, and play during an open, unstaffed time in the Youth and Sports Center gym and the playground outside Great Hall. Third Grade Bible Blessing: Workshop options: Wednesday, Jan. 25 or Sunday, Jan. 29; Celebrations: Wednesday, Feb. 1, Saturday, Feb. 4 or Sunday, Feb. 5. As children become independent readers, it is a natural time to fulfill the baptismal promise to place the Scriptures into their hands. Children and their families will learn some basics about the Bible, as well as ways to incorporate the Bible in daily readings and family devotions through this special workshop. Parents will present the Bible to their child(ren) in worship. 4

Women s Ministry Candlelight Snowshoe Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, 6 p.m. Meet in Great Hall Fireside Lounge Snowshoe or hike through our beautiful candlelit woods of St. Andrew s. Help create the inspirational winter art piece and then enjoy a warm fire, music, hot cider, cocoa and treats. Cost: $5 per person ($20 family max.). Register at Midwinter Flourish Retreat Naples, Florida, Feb. 1-5 Join Women s Ministry in taking a bite out of winter and recharge in sunny Florida. We will look at ways to cultivate creativity, sew beauty, and live in color using the book Flourish by Staci Frenes. Join us as we slide down snowy hills on tubes and then dine on the extravagant delicacy of fried dough and hot chocolate. We are also looking for parent volunteers to attend and/or help carpool.
