2 From the Desk of the Lead Pastor Living Is Giving In my life I have been blessed with many good teachers and guides. One of my favorite mentors was an older couple who lived up north. I would visit their very modest home. Their furniture was old and a bit shabby. Their home, while it was in good repair, was very outdated. From outward appearances they seemed poor. I would drink coffee with them and talk about sermons, family life and the world. They were faithful, loving people. Every time I left their home they gave me a gift. An old trinket or some coffee cake. They would smile and say that to live is to give. They loved their church and loved their God. After several years of visits they passed away. It was hard for our community to lose them both in a short time. The week after both were gone, I was talking to our treasurer and she stated that it was hard to lose our best givers. I was shocked. One month later I found that they left a generous gift to our foundation. They lived and died exuding what they professed. Giving was central to their faith. In a consumer-driven world, in a world full of take, I miss their humble and quiet witness to the Gospel. In our lives Tammy and I have tried to emulate what we saw this loving couple do. As we live into our Gospel calling, we are freed from guilt, shame and death. Sin and hell have been destroyed in the power of the resurrection. In this new freedom we are freed to exhale all the gifts we have been given back into the world. I have also been humbled by the way the people of this church have given. We have responded to the grace of Jesus Christ in many ways. One of them is the way the people of St. Andrew s give to the ministry of the Gospel. Generosity flows here. With our gifts combined we are seeing God make things happen in big and small ways. Thank you for what you do! As you think about your legacy of giving, if you have any questions about how to give or what to give, please talk to any of the pastors or our Foundation board and we can help you. Rev. Michael D. 7 Children Teach Us Grace By Maggie Sullivan, Child Advocate, CRC In Matthew 10:13, Jesus tells us to Receive the kingdom of God like a child. What an unnatural concept for us to grasp in the midst of our stressful lives. We often get so caught up in being professionals, parents, co-workers, and spouses, we forget that God also calls us to be his children. My favorite thing about the Resource Center is getting to witness children of God in action every day. One afternoon last fall, I was with my group of kids at the playground there were only a few of us that day two preschoolers and a 2 year-old. We were just about to start a game of tag when we noticed a woman and a young boy approaching us. When I went over to say hello, the woman told me she had just met with the case manager and that she and her 4 year-old son were moving into our shelter that night. Her eyes told the story of struggle, pain and a yearning for peace. I welcomed the two of them, smiling, and listened intently as she told me a bit of her story. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed her son walking tentatively over to the playground. A few moments later, I turned around and will never forget what I saw. My three kids had embraced the new young boy in a giant group hug. I heard a tiny, excited voice exclaim A new friend! They took his hand and showed him over to the sandbox, where all the best toys are. I stood by and watched, dumbfounded, and overcome by the act of kindness I had just witnessed. They had literally received this child with open arms. In the face of homelessness, struggle, and instability, these children welcomed a stranger as a precious gift. What a wonder and a blessing it is to be part of a community that values kindness and acceptance above all else. The children I spend my days with at the resource center have so little, and they have so much of their lives left to live but if we open our hearts to learn from them, they remind us, time and time again, how to be children of God. Welcome Cheryl Peterson We are pleased to welcome a new team member to the CRC! Cheryl Peterson is a Licensed Social Worker with direct practice experience with families in poverty and crisis. Most recently she coordinated the justice and outreach ministries at Guardian Angels Church and was very involved in opening the Hope for the Journey Home Shelter. She is currently enrolled in a Spiritual Direction Preparation Program at The Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and is excited to join the team at the Community Resource Center. She is serving as a case manager. Summer Volunteers! Summer is an especially busy time at the CRC as kids are out of school and spending their days with us. If you are an adult or 14 or older, consider signing up for some summer shifts and having fun with our kids who stay in shelter. Play on the playground, do art projects, go to the gym, play yard games and more. This counts toward Confirmation service hours. Sign up online at saintandrews.org on the Community Resource Center page. Call or Debbie Larson with questions. Dlarson@saintandrews.org,

8 Radical Hospitality: Proclaiming Christ s Love In Action Part 3 by Erin Morris, Diaconal Minister of Faith Engagement According to the book, Fusion - Turning First-Time Guests into Fully-Engaged Members of Your Church, on average it takes people seven minutes to decide whether they want to return to a church again. Perhaps for St. Andrew s it is 10 minutes, as it can take seven minutes to just walk through the parking lot. In this first seven or ten minutes people are making judgments based on how they are greeted, treated and seated. In the next few months we will take a look at each of these individual practices. For in practicing radical hospitality or creating a culture of invitation, we all must take seriously our role in welcoming each other. It is not just the pastor, usher or greeter s job, it is the job of the Body of Christ, of which we are all a part. Greeting: Everywhere we go we are greeted grocery store, clothing store, restaurants and coffee shops. At Starbucks we are trained to greet every person who comes into the store. When employees at Starbucks are working at their best, a person should be greeted at least twice and also have made two different connections. The Church should be no different. But not everyone is an extrovert. It is not easy for all people to greet others. That is OK, because it is not really about you. Remember that radical hospitality is the act of making others comfortable, and most often it involves making yourself uncomfortable. A perfect time to practice this in when we take time in worship to greet each other. The root of this is the passing of the peace. It is an old Christian tradition and it is about how we pass God s peace to one another. It is a peace that surpasses all understanding, and since it is from God and not from myself, I can pass the peace to all of God s children. I can pass it to those I know and to those I don t, those I like and those I don t. It is a peace that does not come from me but from God and moves me beyond myself. Here are a couple of tips for greeting each other in the name of Christ. Smile. It is amazing what a little smile can do. It causes someone else to smile and immediately lowers someone s defenses. Phrases to use: Hello. Nice to see you. Welcome. God s peace to you. Take time. If you want to go above and beyond the worship greeting then follow the three-minute rule. Three minutes before or after worship find someone whom you do not know and have a conversation with them. Share with them where you are from and how you got connected to St. Andrew s, and ask them to share the same. You never know who you will meet and how you might already be connected. Over a year ago I asked a couple to get to know another couple who had just started coming to the church. These two couples began a great friendship. Recently, through random circumstances, the two wives realized they knew each other from over 40 years ago and hadn t recognized it because both of their lives had taken different turns. Now these two women are connected deeper because of their faith, their church home and their history. You never know who you are going to meet, so take a chance and say hello. 8

In fact, recycling creates four jobs for every one job created in the waste management and disposal industries. Recycling is responsible for adding $2.98 billion dollars to the state s economy and there is still more material to be recycled. According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, the production of recycled paper used 65 percent less energy than producing paper with virgin materials and produces 95 percent less air pollution than paper production using raw materials. 9

18 Vision Slovakia Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve! The Multiple Ministries of Vision Slovakia Pre-school Program A group of ten adults will teach the growing pre-school day program in Martin, Slovakia, during the week of July 4-8. The format will look like a Vacation Bible School program with a Bible story, recreation time, craft time, singing new songs and program for parents and grandparents on Friday. We will work in their new class rooms on the campus of the Center for Christian Education. These rooms have been refurbished and renewed in partnership with the City of Martin. We will work with the pre-school teachers as we share resources and learn from one another in teaching the youngest of God s children. Peer Ministry Program As the High School classes grow in Martin with the addition of the new buildings, more youth are being drawn to this Christian bi-lingual high school. These youth do not always come from a background in which faith in Jesus is lived out and experienced. And coming from a repressive governmental system, the families have been living in a way in which they do not readily express their emotions. The current youth who have been trained in Peer Ministry are thus finding themselves in interesting situations, sharing conversations with their peers they have not had before regarding life s circumstances and faith. Led by Pastor Mike Carlson, Diaconal Minister Erin Morris and Youth Minister Josh Carlson, St. Andrew s Peer Ministry program returns to Martin for the third year. We will continue to teach Peer Ministry but add a second and deeper dimension to equip those who have already been trained to develop more skills. Josh Carlson, David Espe and Abby Rost will work with the new youth, teaching the basics of conversation creating, welcoming people and sharing their faith. Erin Morris and Haley Boyd will begin the second phase, creating something new that will focus on building the Peer Ministers as a team, as well as helping them know themselves better and to be able to connect with others at a deeper level. We will become aware of what Slovakia teens are going through and help them speak the Gospel into these situations. We know that God is present, that he is the light that no darkness can overcome. In that light we find hope and the ability to get through the brokenness of the world. As missionaries in Slovakia, we are charged with helping others experience this light. We will be helping to transform the world so that all may know Christ s healing power. The three new Peer Ministry students from our congregation have been selected to be our leaders among the teen age high school students in Martin this summer and are introduced: Hi, my name is Hayley Boyd. I am both honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to travel to Martin, Slovakia, this summer! I am most excited for making new friendships and connections with the kids with whom we will be working, teaching them and helping them grow through peer ministry, and also allowing myself to grow in faith and peer ministry skills as we teach. I cannot wait for this opportunity and all of the amazing experiences that I m sure will come from it. Hi, my name is Abby Rost. I have always loved traveling and experiencing new places, people, and cultures, which is why I m very excited about the opportunity to travel to Slovakia. I am also excited because I loved my peer ministry experience and cannot wait to teach others the skills I have learned that help me treat everyone with kindness. In a world full of hate and hurt, kindness is a very valuable, important, and simple way to show the love of God to everyone. Hi, my name is David Espe. I would like to go to Slovakia so I can expand my faith and help teach others about God. I have always been interested in becoming a pastor, and I think this opportunity to help teach youth will clarify my call to ministry. continued on next page 18

19 Builders Group On Monday, April 18, a group of nine members of St. Andrew s and partner congregations left to work on the construction and to create new science labs and class rooms in the two buildings adjacent to the Center for Christian Education campus in Martin. These two buildings, which previously housed offices and presses for the printing of communist propaganda literature, have been purchased by the CCE. Now these buildings will house laboratories and class rooms for the teaching of the Christian faith. The group focused on recreating and defining the spaces for the physics and chemistry labs for the high school students. In the midst of the challenging news of preparing new science laboratories and class rooms, we just received alarming news from Bohdan Hrobon, director of the CCE. There has been a resurgence of neo Nazi political leaders in Slovakia and neighboring nations, specifically in the Banksa Bystrica Region just South of Martin. Bohdan writes in an of this concern: We had a special CCE meeting the day after this sad, surprising election and my main message was that our ministry is now more important than ever. We have made an effort to integrate these issues into our curriculum and asked guest speakers to talk to our students about the dangers of these radical philosophies. This past month we completed our school service project to help refugees and learn about the human rights crisis globally. We have even obtained several national awards for our unique approaches to teaching our students to think critical and serve their neighbor regardless oftheir ethnicity. Thank you for your concern, for your prayers and support. Yes, there is a lot of work to do, but we are in this together and it is of God, so it will prevail :) Love, Bohdan Listen to worship LIVE on the web and radio! 20 Mission Jamaica 2016 Our final St Andrew s team of the season came back on March 19 full of joyful memories. Memories of new friends, new skills, laughs, songs, prayers, as well as a gifted understanding of a precious piece of God s beloved people. We were a fabulously diverse group of 23, ranging in age from Experience levels of each missionary ranged from two people with 27 years experience to 11 first timers. Point of interest: the 12 year old was on his fourth trip, the 79 year old was on his first trip, and both were critical in the building of three large picnic tables for the basic school in Callaloo Mews. Once the work began one would be hard pressed to tell the difference. This is one mean, paint-brushswinging, song-singing, foundation-digging, nail-pounding, bolttightening, cement-mixing, book-reading, kid-hugging, relationshipbuilding machine. Yes, a house was built for Latoya and her young children. Yes, improvements, such as electric wiring, kitchen remodeling, wall painting and table building were done in the Callaloo Mews neighborhood. Yes, many school kids were fed breakfasts in the Waterhouse neighborhood. Yes, gallons of paint were rolled, brushed and spilled. Boards were cut, nails pounded, and a window was installed at Hope Valley Experimental School. Most importantly, however, God s love was shared, lived and experienced by all. Christian relationships were created and strengthened. These are relationships formed from the commission of Jesus when he said, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me I am sending you. Thank you, Jesus! If you have ever considered joining us on a Mission Jamaica trip and weren t certain you could help at all, re-read this article, contact me and I ll buy you a cup of coffee. I look forward to it. Thank you to all who have so faithfully supported us through time, money and prayers. You have been a huge part of this ministry. Joy, peace and Jesus. 21 Habitat for Humanity 25 Years at St. Andrew s 2016 will be the 25th year St. Andrew s has helped a needy family achieve home ownership! Let s celebrate and make this Habitat for Humanity build season something special! Put your faith into action again this year. We are proud to be the #1 church in the metro area in terms of both volunteer days and sponsorship dollars. Join this important local mission! The project this spring will be at Generation Ave. in Hugo, just east of Highway 61 off of 147th. This will be a four-unit townhome that we will work on from May 16 through June 24, skipping the week of Memorial Day. You may know that Habitat for Humanity is not a charity program. Homeowners make their down payment with hours of sweat equity, and then pay a zero interest 30-year mortgage for the actual cost of the house. Homeowners are carefully selected from needy applicants; only one in ten qualified applicants is offered one of the approximately 50 homes built each year by volunteers and Habitat families here in the Twin Cities. A Thank-You note from last summer s Habitat family: My name is Mimi Birhanu. I came to Minnesota 11 years ago. As a newcomer to America I had many challenges such as food, language, culture, you name it. Reading the Bible and prayer help me to go day by day. In the beginning of 2015, God gave me another miracle in my life a Habitat for Humanity house! Once God started working in my life, everything was possible to me and even my friends and family. Now when I open my house door it always reminds me of God and St. Andrew s. I wish if I speak English well to tell you how much I appreciate you with all my heart. Both Lidia and Nathneal so happy since we moved the new house. They experience their own bed room. When I see their freedom to play my eyes feel full of tears. That was my biggest worry when I was living in apartment. Finally our thanks to St. Andrew s pastors and members, especially volunteers who put in your money, time and everything. God bless you! As Bible say, you will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasions... 2 Corinthians 9:11.
