1 Term Planner April Fri 20: Assembly 9am Tues 24: ANZAC Day Liturgy 9:30am Wed 25: ANZAC Day Public Holiday ANZAC March 8:00am Thurs 26: HSC Info Night 5:30pm Fri 27: Assembly 9am May Mon 7: Labour Day Public Holiday ANZAC Day March Wednesday 25 April 8:00am Dome Carpark Corner of River and Gregory Streets Dear Parents, 19 April 2018 Welcome back everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the time spent with your family and found the faith experiences of the Easter celebrations to be a special time for you. I also hope that you had the opportunity to reinforce the real meaning of Easter and eggs and the new life and hope they represent. It was wonderful to see the safe return of our students filled with great stories of Easter holiday adventures. I wish everyone in our school community a tremendous term ahead in which we can all live out our motto: God With Us. The Easter message is one of hope; hope amidst cruel injustice. It is this one, small word that will carry us through difficulties that accompany each person s journey. Our staff express their hope for our students in their own impressive work ethic and positive approach to their jobs. I am encouraged by the people I work with and become changed by them. My hope is that I am not changed to the detriment of offering hope to others and that I work hard to make a positive difference. Next Wednesday Emmanuel will join with thousands of others throughout Australia in celebrating Anzac Day. I don t know what it is but when I hear the Ode of Remembrance and the playing of the Last Post, I find the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I have an overwhelming sense of pride and emotion. It is a relatively new experience in so much as I cannot recall feeling the same way as a child or young adult. The tradition of attendance at ANZAC Day ceremonies and marches has grown in the last decade to now large numbers. I sense (and hope) it is the recognition of sacrifice, the presence of courage and national pride rather than the glorification of war that has brought people back to this ceremony. This special day ranks as one of the most widely celebrated in Australian culture because of the place that the brave deeds of many Australians have in our history. Anzac Day is our solemn memorial to honour our Navy, Army and Air Force service personnel who have paid the supreme sacrifice of their lives in the battle to free us from the enemies of our country and to protect the democratic values for which we stand. As the 103 rd anniversary of Anzac Day approaches may we remember all those ordinary men and women who have marched out of our lives, leaving in their path a faint echo of music and snatches of laughter and life. A century scored and scarred by war, loss and grief. All so long and yet so short; all so far and yet so near. It is my prayer that the spirit of Easter may permeate Anzac Day, so that a renewed vigour for peace and goodwill among all our citizens may be rekindled from remembering the sacrifice of so many in times of war. They died so we might not only cherish, but also spend ourselves for authentic values of truth, justice and peace in our land. May we work for the common good of all by building up the harmony and peace for which the fallen fought and died. For followers of Jesus ANZAC Day should be a call for us to remember and invite us to do things differently to work to build a culture of peace. Jesus spirit is very much alive but it can only live on in people. As we begin this term together, may we care for each other, enjoy the gathering times and continue to nurture our own spirit. Wishing you every blessing for the coming week, Geraldine Rostirolla (Principal)
2 Religious Education HOW MUCH? A REFLECTION I asked Jesus, How much do you love me? This much, He answered, and stretched out His arms and died. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. (Mary Davis) Joyfulness is an inner sense of peace and happiness that fills us with delight and hope. It allows us to enjoy simple pleasures and to appreciate the gifts that each day brings. Joy can carry us through the hard times, even when we are feeling very sad. Joy gives us wings. Joy is not in things. it is in us. (Richard Wagner) ANZAC LITURGY All members of the Emmanuel community are invited to our ANZAC Liturgy which will be held in the Marist Centre on Tuesday 24 April at 9:30am. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest We Forget. Noeleen Kliese Assistant Principal Religious Education (Acting) Parent/Teacher Interviews Bookings will close at 3pm sharp today (Thursday). Thank you to those parents who have already booked interviews. If you have not done so yet, please book online following the instructions attached. ANZAC DAY MARCH WEDNESDAY 25 APRIL NEW STARTING POINT Emmanuel Catholic Primary School will once again march in the Anzac Day Parade on WEDNESDAY April 25. Please note that the 2018 ANZAC Day Morning Parade has a NEW STARTING LOCATION. The march will depart from the DOME Car Park, on the corner of River and Gregory Street, behind the new Dudley Denny Library. The parade will continue down Gregory Street, right onto Gordon Street and left onto Wellington Street to finish up at Jubilee Park for the annual Morning Ceremony and laying of the wreaths. Students need to assemble at 8:00am. To minimise congestion, parents are asked to vacate the Dome Carpark as soon as their child is under the supervision of school staff. Students are to wear their BLUE SCHOOL UNIFORM (school blue dress for girls) with
3 correct socks and clean shoes. The school hat is essential. Students may wear medals of their parents, grandparents and other ancestors on their right breast. At the conclusion of the march, teachers will supervise students until they are collected by an adult. Emmanuel students will be assembled under the Emmanuel School banner, in or around NELSON ST, near Central State School. Please collect students as quickly as possible after the parade. Please ensure that your child has your mobile number in their pocket and that your phone has been taken off silent and checked for messages at the conclusion of the march, in the event that school staff are trying to contact you. Please find attached a flyer from Mackay City Council regarding the new route, which includes a map. We welcome as many Prep Year 6 students as possible to take part in the march this year. Curriculum Corner NAPLAN Online Please be advised of the following dates during which Year 3 and Year 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN Online: exposed to the knowledge and skills required for successful participation in each of the components of NAPLAN, Writing; Numeracy; Reading and Grammar. It is important to remember that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests. At the classroom level, it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress. In preparation for NAPLAN Online, students across all year levels are engaged in technology lessons and are 11yr Boys - Parker McGovern, Cooper Deguara, Christian Camilleri, Matthew Gauci, William McGrath, Isaak Mezzen 11yr Girls - Lily Knudsen, Isabel Miles, Eryn DePinto, Erin Synnott, Laniece Pace, Clara Chow 12yr Boys Emmanuel Bartolo HOCKEY Congratulations to Laura Camilleri in her selection for the Capricornia School Hockey Team, which will compete at the state titles 14 June Well done Laura!
4 RUGBY LEAGUE Mackay School Boy Rugby League kicked off yesterday afternoon when Emmanuel took on the traditionally strong Sarina State Primary School. However, from the very first kick-off of the game, it was evident it was going to be our day. Emmanuel s big men set the platform the team needed to spread the ball wide to their talented, quick outside backs. The forward pack was led by captain Rueben Bishop who barnstormed his way through the Sarina defence with every carry of the ball. Special mention also goes to Kade Adamson who had to leave the field due to a foot injury only to return and cut the opposition attack in half with each of his bonecrunching tackles. What was most pleasing however was the way in which Emmanuel played the game, not giving away any penalties and making only minimal mistakes. Final Score: Emmanuel 26 to Sarina 8. Due to Anzac Day, there will be no fixture next week. Emmanuel s next game is on 2nd May, 4:50 pm against Marian (Field 2). During the first week, as we were feeling the effects of Cyclone Iris, a green cheeked conure was found in the under croft area. This little bird was so tame, it perched on Miss Lauren s shoulder. It was wonderful to observe our OSHC ers displaying empathy and concern towards this lost animal. The children made a home for it in a box, and provided it with fresh carrot and water. Fortunately, one of the children recognised and had cared for this type of breed before, and he and his family have adopted the bird after we received no responses since we reported it on Mackay Lost Pet Finders. During our first week of Term two, we have been undergoing our Accreditation and Rating process, conducted by the Department of Education and Training. This service always welcomes input, ideas and suggestions from families and our local community. We welcomed some new faces to our OSHC family over the holiday period, and look forward to working together with these families in the future. If you have any inquiries regarding outside school care for your child, please do not hesitate to contact us on TOUR de Cure Some Emmanuel Staff members will be in attendance at the Tour de Cure ride on Friday 27 April at the Mackay Harbour. Everyone is encouraged to cheer on the team, which includes some of our Emmanuel parents. Please note parents are responsible for the transport and supervision of their children while at the harbour. Please drop off any remaining Coles Sports Vouchers as soon as possible. Thank you to those families that have already done so. Community Notices OSHC Over the recent holiday period, Emmanuel OSHC participated in a variety of experiences, which included drama, paper craft, yoga, baking, Bunnings Craft TRIPLE P Seminar TRIPLE P PARENTING EXPERT IS COMING TO MACKAY, PROSERPINE AND CANNONVALE IN MAY While many North Queensland families could write the book on resilience, Triple P Positive Parenting Program founder Professor Matt Sanders has!
