Term 1 02/04/2015 [E Version] Matters for Prayer Blessed and Safe Easter Vacation. New students and their families, due to commence in Term 2. Our newly elected State Government that they will be godly and wise in their governance. 1 FROM THE PRINCIPAL On March 31 st, 2008, US President George W Bush presented the United States Department of Defense Medal of Honor, to the parents of Navy SEAL, Michael Anthony Monsoor. Monsoor was a member of Delta Platoon, and arrived in Iraq to train Iraqi soldiers in April Over the next five months, Monsoor and his platoon frequently engaged in combat with enemy forces. On September 29, 2006 an insurgent threw a grenade onto a rooftop where Monsoor and several other SEAL and Iraqi soldiers were positioned. Monsoor quickly smothered the grenade with his body, absorbing the resulting explosion and saving his comrades from serious injury or death. Monsoor died about 30 minutes later from serious wounds caused by the grenade explosion. At one level the story of Michael Monsoor reflects the great sacrifice Christ made 2000 years ago. Jesus took the blow for all of us when he was nailed to that cross. His sacrificial death led to many, many being saved. The sacrifice made by Michael Monsoor, as noble and wonderful as it was, pales into insignificance when compared to that of Christ. Monsoor s act saved the lives of his comrades, his allies, his friends. Christ on the other hand gave his life for those opposed to Him, His enemies;
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God s wrath through him! For if, while we were God s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. (Romans 5:6-11) I trust that your family will enjoy Christ s blessings this Easter, as we take the time to reflect upon the wonderful sacrifice He made for us, and the life eternal His resurrection offers. ANZAC DAY As I have previously espoused, this year is very significant to our nation's history, being the centenary of the landing of the ANZAC forces at Gallipoli. I believe it is important for our school to gather with our local community to reflect upon the great sacrifices of many men and women throughout our nation's history, who have given their lives for the freedoms we enjoy. My goal is to have 100 Wycliffe students march in the Springwood ANZAC parade to mark the 100th anniversary. I ask all families to seriously consider participating on the day. Students are to meet at the Fire Station, in Springwood, on Saturday April 25th at 10am ready for the annual march along Macquarie Road to the memorial in Buckland Park where wreaths will be laid. All students are to wear full winter school uniform. I look forward to your family joining us for this significant occasion. WORKING BEE Our next working bee will be held on Saturday May 2 nd from 8am-12pm. Our last working bee proved a wonderful community event, and knocked over a lot of jobs around the school, from the spreading of mulch mountain, to covering books in the library, to pamphlet delivery and more. There will be a great variety of tasks with fine coffee available at morning tea. The working bee will provide an ideal opportunity to complete PIP hours. I look forward to your family s involvement on the day. 2
UNIFORM Term two marks the changeover to winter uniform. The winter uniform is available from our supplier, 'Back To Basics'. Parents are asked to work with the school in ensuring your child/ren is in complete school uniform for the first day of term. While staff have shown some leniency as we have transitioned to the changes throughout Term One, Term Two will see an immediate and more vigilant approach to ensuring student compliance with the uniform code. PRAYER Our second monthly prayer meeting for the school and wider community will occur on Monday 6 th April [Easter Monday] 7-8pm in the staff common room at the school. 4 TELLING THE ANZAC STORY LIBRARY NEWS The reality of war is not an easy subject to share with children but the events of 1915 and the ensuing Western Front battles in which Australian soldiers were engaged continue to have significance in the life and psyche of our nation. Stories provide a way of helping children understand the experience and legacy of war. Here is a selection of some of the books on this topic, available from the school library, that you may consider using to share the meaning of this Gallipoli centenary year with your child. The age listings are a guide only. Simpson and his Donkey by Mark Greenwood and Frane Lessac Set during World War I, Simpson and his Donkey is a child friendly account of the story of John Simpson Kirkpatrick and how he and his donkey, Duffy, rescued over three hundred men during the campaign at Gallipoli, including the little known story of how, without realising, he rescued his childhood friend. Suitable for ages 5 to 7. The Last Anzac by Gordon Winch and Harriet Bailey This book is based on the true story of a small boy s visit to meet Alec Campbell, the Gallipoli veteran, a year before his death in 2002, at the age of 103. James, the boy in this story, gives us a special view of this humble and remarkable man who enlisted in 1915 when he was just 16. Suitable for ages 6 to 9. Anzac Day Parade by Glenda Kane and Lisa Allen. This story takes place on Anzac Day when an old man and a young boy meet. The young boy wide-eyed and wanting to hear the glories of war and death; the old man quietly sad to remember the reality of what was faced. Suitable for ages 8 to 12. Digger the Dog that Went to War by Mark Wilson Based on the true story of Driver, a puppy that was smuggled onto an Australian troop ship during World War One, this story centres upon the bond of love and devotion between a man and his dog as they face the hardships of the Western Front together. This picture book is a moving account of the realities of war, suitable for ages 7 to 14. 4
One Minute s Silence David Metzenthen, illustrated by Michael Camilleri This book invites the reader to consider how they might use the one-minute of silence observed on Anzac Day to remember and honour the brothers in arms on both sides of the Gallipoli conflict Digger and Turk who shed their blood and lost their lives. Suitable for ages 8 to 14. Mr Cooney SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWS YEAR 7 & 8 EXPLORERS ENGLISH TRIES SOMETHING NEW On Thursday 26 March, the Explorers English class decided to try new taste creations, like Roald Dahl described doing in his book Boy. After we created them, we nominated people to taste them and judge them. (Timothy Kruik) In the book Boy, Cadbury sent samples of different chocolates to Roald Dahl s school for the students to taste and review. Today in English, we had to combine different foods to try and make new flavours. (James Walker) To do this, we first tasted all of the foods and then, in groups, put them together to create and taste a new food. (Jessica Howes) Groups created treats like twisties crumbed in mint slice and chocolate cake mixed with cherry starburst. Although it might sound nice, they tasted horrible. (Mackenzie Edwards and David Mitchell) Each group nominated three people to taste their food. The prize for the most disgusting was for a combination of a pizza shape, lolly snake, cake, salt & vinegar chip and a pringle. (Maddy B, Jasmyn H and Grace C) 5
We had a great time and our group won the most disgusting creation prize. (Alex Newton) I was chosen to try someone s food creation and it was disgusting. (Alice Wynn-Hatton) Mrs Maddock s entertaining facial expressions when tasting the undeniably disgusting food was definitely something I ll never forget from being in Explorers. (Maddy Chambers) PRIMARY BASKETBALL SPORT NEWS After a great season, all four Wycliffe teams made it into the Semi Finals. Each team fought hard in their games, however only two teams advanced to the Grand Finals. The Warriors played on Monday night and even though it was a slow start, they eventually kicked into gear and built up a good lead. With great defense, teamwork and a last second 3-pointer from Aidan, the boys beat a much taller and physical team Our Eagles team played their Grand Final game on Tuesday night. After a harder season since splitting our Wolves team into two, the girls really learnt how to work together and understand their own strengths. They played fantastically and worked hard throughout the entire game, yet we went down by 1 point. All teams should be happy in their achievements this season. Many opponents have expressed how our teams have lifted the bar and are encouraging their own players to work harder. The school should be very proud to have you representing them each week in the local community. Finally, a huge thank you to our supporters who turn up each week, wash team uniforms, work as officials on the bench, and manage money and teams. Special mentions must go to Bob Slockee for coaching the Giants boys with so much heart, along with Jo Brischetto and Poppy Gee for improving our strength and endurance levels in weekly fitness training sessions. Without all this parent help, we wouldn t be able to run the basketball program and provide these experiences for our students. Now it is time for the next season. Our Warriors boys are moving up to the Under 14 s competition, while the girls are combining our two teams and will be playing in the Under 16 s competition. The Giants boys will continue to represent Wycliffe in the Under 12 s. Well done everyone on a great season. Mr Peter Brealey - Coach 6
