Supporting Catholic Teaching in the Our World Program Kathy Dombroski Marise Johnston ACTIVITY Charts Unit 1: Our World Chapter 1: How Do People Live in Communities Around the World? Lesson 1.1: Unit Opener 15 Add a Verse Have the class write another verse to the poem, Our World. The theme they will use will be that of God s creation. Ask the students to recall from past years what they have learned about creation. Discuss that God created the world for us to use and we have the responsibility to take care of this magnificent creation we call Earth. Brainstorm ideas and create a verse together. Care for God s Creation: Respect for all life and things Responsibility to take care of all of Earth Lesson 1.2: Children in Communities Around the World 26 Learning About Each Other Discuss with the students that at the beginning of the year, they are welcomed into the classroom as a member of the classroom community. They gather together to learn each other s names and find out something about each other (talk about how you welcomed your students to class this year). In our Catholic school, we belong to a God who wants to dwell in our midst. God has given us the gift of life and loves who we are now. In each other, we welcome an image of God. As an activity, have the students share with the rest of the class something about themselves. Remind the children to listen carefully and without comment while they share. The students should feel that they are in a safe and caring environment. Copyright 2005 Thomson Nelson. Our World ACTIVITY Charts 1

Call to Family, Community, and Participation Lesson 1.3: Research Living in Communities 31 Information in Photographs 3.1.1; 3.S.7.8; and 3.S.9.1 Display pictures taken on the inside and outside of the Catholic church in your own community. Also, if possible find photographs of churches on the Internet or in books on the communities you are studying. Compare the photographs of the churches. Ask how they are the same as or different from each other. A Catholic church brings Catholics together in a community of faith. God wants human beings to live in relationship and flourish in strong, just communities. Together with your class reflect on when, where, why, and how the church community gathers. We are called to be a people of God and to live out our faith in family and in our community. Catholic Identity and Tradition Call to Family, Community, and Participation Lesson 1.4: Starting an Inquiry 38 Start a Scrapbook 3.S.8.1 Discuss the importance of learning about people and communities around the world. Our Catholic tradition teaches us that we are all one human family no matter our nationality, our race, our ethnic background, or whether we are rich or poor in terms of how much money we have. We are our brothers and sisters keepers. We are called by God to love one another. In all our diversity, humans come to live together in peace, harmony, and justice because it is God s will for us. Each individual is unique, with distinct qualities and potential. Each one of us is formed as a unique person by the different relationships we have and the conditions in which we live our lives. After this discussion, have the students illustrate ways of loving one another no matter what our differences are, and present the illustrations to the class. Add the illustrations to the scrapbook. 3 Lesson 1.5: Living in Our Community 41 Conduct an Interview 3.S.7.3; and 3.S.7.11 Send students in pairs to conduct an interview with the principal or teachers of your school. Have them develop questions such as, Why is it important to the Catholic community to have Catholic schools? or What makes our school different from other schools that are not Catholic in our community? Use BLM 8: Interview to gather information for the interview. Call to Family, Community, and Participation Lesson 1.6: What Have We Learned? Copyright 2005 Thomson Nelson. 4 Chapter 2: What Affects Quality of Life in Communities? Lesson 2.1: Quality of Life 54 Make Picture Cards Discuss the question, How do you think each of these features make our school a good place in which to live out our Catholic faith? in relation to the following questions: Why is it important for our school to have a faith-based motto? Why is it important for our school to have a prayer table in each classroom? Why is it important for our school to gather together for celebrations? Why is it important for our school community to take time to learn about God? Why is it important for our school community to display symbols of our faith? Ask students to make picture cards using BLM 10: Picture Cards to show the things that make your school a good place to learn about God and to live out their faith. Catholic Identity and Tradition Lesson 2.2: Quality of Life What s Important? 60 Ways We Belong When you are doing the activity on this page, remind the students that we belong to the family of God. When we gather on Sunday with our church community, we assemble as God s people and our community is made one in the Holy Spirit. We feel that we belong in this community because those who gather with us believe in the same things we do. Catholic Identity and Tradition Lesson 2.3: Quality of Life in Communities 65 Quality of Life A Catholic Perspective Discuss with the students that by our Baptism we are given certain responsibilities to follow the teachings of Jesus. Jesus taught us that we must be aware of those in our community who are not able to take care of themselves. Jesus taught us to care for the poor and vulnerable. Caring for others enhances the quality of life in our community. He said, I was Copyright 2005 Thomson Nelson. Our World ACTIVITY Charts 4

hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. How do people in our community care for the poor and vulnerable? Brainstorm a list of ideas. Rights and Responsibilities of the Human Person Option for the Poor and Vulnerable Lesson 2.4: Exploring Life in Communities 76 Class Inquiry Web 3.S.7.4; and 3.S.8.4 Discuss with the students that as Baptized members of the Catholic Church we are called to live in community. We live with our families in community, in our school and classroom communities, and in the community in which we live. We are all called to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves. We cannot do one without the other. People need to live in community. We live and learn together to become all that we can be, living in response to God s call. Every person is important and people are always more important than things. Chart a web: What is the Catholic Church community? Add questions to the web that will help answer the question. For example: What kinds of songs do they sing? What stories do they listen to and read? What holidays do they celebrate? What groups work within the church community? Who goes to the church? Who works at the church? Life and Dignity of the Human Person Call to Family, Community, and Participation Rights and Responsibilities of the Human Person Lesson 2.5: Addressing Community Problems 88 Food Drive ; and 3.S.6.1 Recall with the students the words of Jesus, I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. Jesus instructs us to care for the poor and vulnerable. Discuss the Food Bank in your community, or perhaps what the Catholic church in your community does to feed the hungry. Have the students run a food drive within your school to teach active membership in community, and the importance of service. Take the students to the Food Bank or the church to deliver food. 7 Unit 2: Places and People Chapter 3: How Can a Community s Location Affect Quality of Life? Lesson 3.1: Unit Opener 107 What Do You Think? Continue discussing pages in the Student Resource by focusing on the questions in the feature What Do You Think? Ask the students, If you could imagine yourself participating in your Catholic church or Catholic school community what would you be doing? Have the students draw or paint a picture showing that participation. Call to Family, Community, and Participation Lesson 3.2: Using Maps and Globes 119 Become a Global Citizen 3.S.5.1 Recall with the students that we are all called to live together in community. We are a group of persons united together in Christ and we have been able to last a very long time as a community, all around the world, because we grow and learn from our past and prepare for the future. A citizen is a person who lives in a city or town, a province, or country. As citizens we use our gifts and talents to contribute to our community. Ask students, How can you describe your responsibility as a Catholic citizen of the global community? Have them work in small groups and write down their answer in a short paragraph, which they will present to the class. Call to Family, Community, and Participation Solidarity of the Human Family Lesson 3.3: Relative Location Lesson 3.4: Locations of Global Communities 127 Copyright 2005 Thomson Nelson. 8 Investigate the Location of Communities ; ; and 3.S.8.1 Organize students into their expert groups to investigate the location of Vatican City as the centre of the Global Community of Catholics. Provide a blank map of Europe for each student. Students should be able to describe the location and the characteristics of the place. How does the location affect the quality of life? How does the environment affect quality of life? Where is Vatican City located in the world? As a class, try to come up with a few more questions to answer. Use books, encyclopedias, as well as the Internet to collect the information. Have the groups share their information with other classes in the school. Catholic Identity and Tradition Lesson 3.5: Location Affects People Lesson 3.6: What Have We Learned? Copyright 2005 Thomson Nelson. Our World ACTIVITY Charts 8

Chapter 4: How Does a Community s Environment Affect Quality of Life? Lesson 4.1 Environment Affects Quality of Life Lesson 4.2: Environment Affects How People Live 147 Learn More About the Environment As Catholics we believe that God created the world for us. God provides for us. Catholic teaching calls us to respect all life and the things that God created for our use. It is our privilege and responsibility to care for the Earth. Read Psalm 104 to the students. Then, as a class reflect on God s Spirit in creation and why it is important that we take care of the Earth. Care for God s Creation Lesson 4.3: Environment in Global Communities 154 A Prayer ; ; and Discuss with the class that water and air that support life on Earth are gifts from God. These gifts join us together as one human family a global family. If we pollute the water and air, we are not taking care of the gift of creation. We must worry about the future. What we do today affects what happens tomorrow. Create a classroom prayer praising God for the wonders of creation and include a promise to take care of it. Care for God s Creation Copyright 2005 Thomson Nelson. Our World ACTIVITY Charts 9

Lesson 4.4: Special Connections 157 Special Places ; and 3.S.7.7 Modify the final question in this activity as follows: What places do you know that have special meanings to people in the global Catholic community? Have students research using books and the Internet to find, for example, the shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes in France, the shrine to Our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland, the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, the basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Paris, and Lac St. Anne in Alberta. 11 Chapter 5: How Do People in Communities Affect Their Environments? Lesson 5.1: Communities Affect Environment 168 Think Locally The School Community ; Recall that human beings are created in the image and likeness of God and God has given us the responsibility to care for the Earth. We receive all that we need from God and in turn God trusts us to make the best use possible of what we use. We are invited by God to be good stewards of God s gifts. We are accountable to God. Begin a discussion with the students about the effect all the students in the school have on the environment (paper, pencils, electricity, noise, playground, garbage). Talk about the role students can play in helping to take care of the school environment as responsible stewards of God s creation. ReadMatthew 25:21 to the class in praise of responsible stewardship. Rights and Responsibilities of the Human Person Care for God s Creation Lesson 5.2: Cause and Effect 176 Cause and Effect Chart 3.S.7.1 Discuss with the students that sinning is when we act in a way that hurts others on purpose. God wants us to understand this and to know that it also hurts us by cutting us off from God and others. People have an effect on others by the actions that they take. Chart ways in which the actions of students in the class have an effect on others in the class. 13 Unit 3: Living and Working Together Chapter 6: What Affects How People Live and Work in Communities? Lesson 6.1: Places for Living and Working Lesson 6.2: Making a Living 209 Opening Activity 3.S.5.1 Have the students brainstorm a list of the kinds of jobs needed in a community. Use the list to play a game of charades to have the students guess the job. At the end of the activity, discuss with the students that it is God s will that every person have the right to meaningful work. Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers Lesson 6.3: Children in Need 215 Helping Others in Need ; and Remind students that Jesus taught us that we have a responsibility to take care of those that cannot take care of themselves. We must show our love for one another and live a life of service. To help the students become aware of the reasons that people in the community need help, and to aid in the understanding that one person can make a difference, share ways that your Catholic school community helps those in need (e.g., Foster Child, Food Bank, Development and Peace, and any other service projects that are going on in your school). The students could participate in raising money for a worthy cause to help those in need. 15 Chapter 7: How Are Communities Connected? Lesson 7.1: Making Connections 230 Discuss Connections In addition to the discussion questions on page 231, ask the students about how Catholic communities (school, church, summer camps) are connected to one another. What are the common things they share? (e.g., God, a common faith, love for God, values, a celebration of special days, prayers, liturgy, symbols, rituals,) Catholic Identity and Tradition Call to Family, Community, and Participation Lesson 7.2: Imports and Exports 237 Discover the Connection 3.S.7.3; and 3.S.8.3 Catholic communities send out missionaries religious and lay people to continue the mission of Jesus in other countries. We are all called in the Gospel message of Christ to take part in the transformation of the world for the better. To further understand how people s needs are met within communities, and to realize how we make connections with other Catholic communities, invite someone who has gone to another country to do missionary work to come and speak to your class. Have the students prepare questions to ask ahead of time. Catholic Identity and Tradition Solidarity of the Human Person Lesson 7.3: Sharing Ideas Lesson 7.4: What Have We Learned? 17 Chapter 8: How Do People Cooperate and Share in Communities? Lesson 8.1: Public Service 252 Providing Public Services Catholic Social Services As a class, research the Mission Statement of Catholic Social Services on the Internet. They are an agency funded partially by the government and they also rely on community support. They serve people of all faiths and cultures with over 100 programs. Ask the question, Why do you think we need the Catholic Social Services Agency in our community? Brainstorm for ideas. (You should be aware that a family might be receiving assistance from an agency and remind students not to share any personal information.) Have the students research the Catholic Social Services site to find out their purpose, some of the programs they run, and who is eligible for their assistance. Have a representative of Catholic Social Services come as a guest speaker to your class. 19 Unit 4: Communities Yesterday and Today Chapter 9: How Do People in Communities Make Decisions Together? Lesson 9.1: Lessons in Stories 286 Sharing Stories ; and Discuss with the students that in scripture stories we are touched by the living word of God. They express the mystery of God in human life. These stories help us learn more about who we are, and to understand who we are in the life of God. In the Gospel stories we meet people just like us. They teach us the tradition of our faith. The heart of our faith is our belief in God. Whenever the Church gathers, it expresses its faith in celebration. Have the students share some of the Gospel stories they know. Discuss how the stories can teach us about making decisions. Jesus is the Master Teacher and we learn from his examples. The values we believe in are Gospel values. Catholic Identity and Tradition Call to Family, Community, and Participation Lesson 9.2: Making Decisions in Communities 290 Making the Right Choice Outcome(s ; and Discuss with the students that God wants us to give the best of ourselves in whatever we do. We can practice doing the right thing, to make the right choices, and through practice, doing the right thing becomes a habit with us. It leads us to be the kind of person we are. Virtues are one name for good habits. Generosity and kindness are virtues we can practice. The virtues of faith, hope, and charity are gifted to us at Baptism by God. Talk about a decision that was made recently in your classroom or in the school community. What were the choices, and what was the final decision? Why was it made? 21 Chapter 10: How Do People Celebrate Their Communities? Lesson 10.1: About Celebrations Lesson 10.2: Stories, Traditions, and Celebrations 315 We Celebrate Together ; and We celebrate our faith in our school community by preparing and participating in classroom and school liturgies. We also go to church to celebrate Mass with the church community. It is one way that we live out our faith. We give gratitude to God for the gifts of creation. We are grateful for the gift of faith, and for our lives. We rejoice that we are in the presence of a God who loves us unconditionally. Music helps us to experience our story in song, and we use music to give thanks and praise to God. With the class, prepare a liturgical celebration that celebrates everything we have learned this year about being a part of a Catholic community. Use songs, prayers, readings, a psalm and response, and intentions. Make it a joyful celebration of who we are. Invite parents and/or the rest of the school to participate in the celebration.
